Chapter 28 – Shadows and Desire
The night was heavy with mist. The aftermath of the border skirmish still clung to the forest — extinguished torches scattered in the dirt, the stench of blood hanging in the air. Yet amidst that silence, something else lingered between two figures: Valdyn Thalorian, golden-haired heir of the Forest Elves, and Nymeris, the young leader of the Dark Elves.

The Shadow Battalion marched back, weary but transformed. Their faces were pale, their hands still shook, but the fire in their eyes had changed. They were no longer children.
The Dark Elf villagers watched them return. Some were awed, some skeptical, but all fell quiet when Nymeris spoke.
"Humans have entered our borders. Not scouts. Not hunters. Soldiers. If we remain divided, they will devour this forest."
Her words hung like a blade in the air. The elders exchanged uneasy glances. And among the whispers, a name resurfaced: Thalorian. The child of prophecy.

That night, Valdyn was summoned to Nymeris's quarters.
Her dwelling was carved with patterns of shadow, lit by crystals that glowed with dim violet light. It was nothing like the sunlit homes of the Forest Elves.
Nymeris sat poised in the center, her silver hair gleaming like moonlight. Her eyes burned with cold fire.
"Forest Elves live in light," she said softly. "Dark Elves in shadow. Two worlds that cannot meet. And yet tonight… I want to see if they can be joined."
Valdyn met her gaze without flinching. "If light and shadow always fight, then perhaps together… they can form balance."
A faint smile tugged her lips. "Sweet words. Prove them."

Without another word, they moved closer.
Nymeris, always the cold sorceress, revealed another side — curious, hungry, yet testing him with every touch. She pushed, she resisted, she tried to measure his strength.
Valdyn answered with both dominance and tenderness. Their clash was no less fierce than their duel, but where magic and arrows once flew, now heat and breath entwined.
When the night was done, Nymeris lay beside him, breath ragged, her pale fingers clutching his arm. Her violet eyes no longer held only challenge — there was recognition, even acceptance.

The first rays of light filtered through the cracks in the tent. Nymeris sat at the edge of the bed, hair tumbling like silver silk. Her expression remained cool, but something gentler stirred in her eyes.
"Do not think I've surrendered," she said quietly. "But from this day on… I will listen to your voice, Valdyn Thalorian."
Valdyn smiled faintly. "That's enough to begin."
This was more than the conquest of a woman. This was the first step toward uniting Forest Elves and Dark Elves.

As they stepped outside, the Shadow Battalion awaited. One youth rushed forward, breathless.
"Valdyn! Lady Nymeris! Scouts returned — the humans… they grow in number."
Valdyn took the report but did not react immediately. The humans were a storm, yes, but rushing headlong into them now would break the fragile foundation he was laying.
He looked at Nymeris, then at the twelve who now entrusted their lives to him.
First, unite the clans. First, strengthen the roots. Only then… will the world beyond be challenged.
