Chapter 31 – Children of Shadow and Light

Three months had passed since the night Valdyn revealed the secret of the ancestors before the Dark Elf elders.

Since then, the village had changed. The Dark Elves whispered wherever Nymeris walked, their gazes heavy with suspicion, fear, and desperate hope. The fate of their people seemed to rest on her womb.

And tonight, that fate would be decided.

---

Beneath the colossal roots of the ancient tree, a stone chamber glowed with violet crystal light. The air was thick with the scent of healing herbs, and the silence was broken only by strained breathing and hushed prayers.

Nymeris lay upon a bed of stone draped in black cloth. Her pale face glistened with sweat, her silver eyes sharp even as pain wracked her body. Her hand clutched Valdyn's tightly, refusing to let go.

"Breathe slowly," Valdyn whispered, steady though his heart raced. "I'm here."

Nymeris shot him a glare between contractions, her voice strained but biting.

"If you dare leave me now, Valdyn Thalorian… I will drag you back from hell itself."

A faint smile tugged at his lips. "Then I have no choice but to stay."

Her scream pierced the chamber, answered by the chants of the healers as they prepared for what none had seen in centuries.

---

A cry rang out—sharp, defiant, alive.

"A girl," the healer announced, lifting a small infant with hair as black as night and eyes gleaming silver.

Nymeris sobbed, reaching weakly toward her daughter, but another wave of agony seized her before she could speak.

---

Her body convulsed again. Valdyn gripped her hand tighter, willing his strength into her.

Another cry followed—a boy with pale silver hair and gentle green eyes.

Relief filled the room for a heartbeat, but it was shattered by yet another contraction.

"Another…? Impossible," whispered one of the elders.

A third cry tore through the silence. A second boy, his hair pale gold like Valdyn's, but with dark eyes born of shadow.

Three children.

The chamber froze. The elders stared, wide-eyed. In all Elven history, a twin birth was unheard of—yet here lay three.

---

The white-bearded elder trembled, leaning on his staff.

"This… is a miracle. The ancestors truly move through Thalorian blood."

Some elders dropped to their knees. Others stood pale, unable to speak.

Nymeris, exhausted, wept and smiled faintly. "Valdyn… look at them. Our children…"

Valdyn gathered the infants into his arms, their cries cutting through him like fire, igniting a resolve that blazed brighter than ever.

Valdyn looked down at his children, his chest tightening. Their cries were not just the cries of newborns—they were a declaration of life, a defiance against the world.

"My children… you are the light within the shadows. I swear you will grow in a world no longer hunting us. I will protect you, until my final breath."

Nymeris, pale but smiling faintly, whispered, "And if you break that vow, Valdyn Thalorian… I will be the one to punish you."

He squeezed her hand, eyes burning with determination.

---

But outside the birthing chamber, the night stirred.

A deep, resonant roar rolled from the east—low, heavy, and suffocating, shaking the very roots of the forest. Guards at the gates froze, their faces paling as the sound sank into their bones.

The elders exchanged grim looks.

"That… that is no wolf," one whispered.

The white-bearded elder's voice broke as he spoke the name.

"Felthorn… the Eastern Tiger. One of the Forest Lords."

Valdyn turned toward the sound, holding his children close. His emerald eyes burned.

"So… the Forest itself wishes to test us. Very well. I will answer its challenge."
