Chapter 97 – The Silence Between Shadows

There are mornings when the world seems to mock you with its brightness.
Today was one of those mornings.
The sunlight fell too easily across the glass walls of my sitting room, glittering against the marble floors, spilling over the fresh bouquet that had been placed on the low table. White roses. Always white roses. I detest them, yet I allow them in every corner of the house. A reminder, perhaps, that beauty is often sterile pretty, scentless, and dead.
I stirred my tea once, twice, then set the spoon aside with care. My reflection in the silver tray was calm, flawless. My hair was neatly coiled, my nails immaculate. Everything in its place except my thoughts.
Kade had been gone for two days, and silence was beginning to irritate me.
It wasn't worry that gnawed at me it was anticipation. Silence never means peace in my world; it means movement I cannot see.
The door opened quietly, and there he was.
