The morning light slipped through the tall glass panels of my sitting room, scattering across marble floors like spilled honey. The house was quiet, except for the soft rustle of servants moving in the distance the faint clinking of china, the smell of fresh coffee and baked brioche filling the air.
Luxury was a language I'd mastered long ago.
Serenity, too though mine was the kind that could curdle into violence at the slightest memory.
I stirred my tea slowly, watching the ripples settle. I liked mornings like this soft, orderly, obedient. Nothing out of place. No reminders of the woman I'd once called daughter, the woman who had made a mockery of everything I built.
Kade stood by the window, his expression unreadable as always. "You asked for an update."
"I did." I leaned back, crossing one leg over the other. "Speak."
