The city gleamed like liquid gold beneath the rising sun, but my mind was miles away. I'd been staring at the skyline from my office window for almost an hour, not really seeing any of it. The glass reflected my own face back at me composed, unreadable, but tight around the eyes.
The problem with being powerful was that you couldn't protect everyone, not truly. You could only build walls and hope the world didn't find a way through.
Behind me, the soft knock on the door broke the silence.
"Come in," I said, not turning around.
Silas stepped in, file in hand, his expression serious but calm as always. "Eli just reported back," he said. "The observer still has eyes on the estate. He says movement around the perimeter remains clean, no breaches so far."
I exhaled slowly. "And the man we're tracking?"
