Chapter 9 - "Not Alone"

The estate had grown quieter than usual. Too quiet.

Samir sat near the balcony and there in the night breeze brushing against his face. Below the balcony the grounds stretched wide and dark and the trees swaying like restless shadows. Somewhere in the distance there was a dog Who barked with sharp and frightened voice, then suddenly get silenced.

He looked uneasy. This wasn't the first time.

Servants had whispered all day. Chickens missing from the coop. Hoof marks near the stable where no horse should have been. Scratches along the iron gate it's deep enough to peel the paint.

Samir hadn't said much but inside his mind he kept replaying every detail.

[System Alert: Anomaly Detected.]

[Energy Spike: 0.7 km, Perimeter Zone.]

His chest tightened. "So it's real," he muttered under his breath.

The hum of Chaos lingered again soft but steady, like static in his bones.

[Directive: Investigate or Ignore. User Choice Required.]

Samir smirked, though unease crawled in his stomach. "Ignore? Yeah, like I could sleep after hearing that." He rose quietly, slipping with a dark jacket.

The corridor outside creaked as he walked.

Creeeeaaakkk.

He froze with glancing around and try listening but nothing. Only the sound of the wind pressing against the shutters.

He moved on. Step by step.

Down in the courtyard, the silence felt thicker. A faint rustle came from the hedges

— shhhk shhhk —

but when he turned around there was nothing , nothing moved. then suddenly the torches by the walls flickered weakly and shadows jumping like broken shape.

"Alright," Samir whispered. "Show me where."

[Navigation Mode: Active.]

[Marking Path → Proceed North-West Gate.]

A faint line of light flickered in his vision tracing across the estate. Samir followed it with a soft footsteps against the stone path. His breath fogged faintly in the cool air, though the night wasn't that cold. Something unnatural pressed against his skin, it was a prickling sensation that made the hair on his arms stand.

As he neared the outer gate then the smell hit him.like Metallic and Sharp Blood.

He crouched low with heart hammering.

SCRRRATCH.

The sound ripped through the night and the claws dragging against stone. His eyes widened. Then slowly, avoiding any noise he try to peek around the edge of the gate.

For a moment, he saw nothing. Just grass bending with the wind.

Then suddenly he saw it, a glowing eyes.Yellow and unblinking but burning in the dark.

Samir's breath caught. The figure stepped closer, the outline breaking free of the night. Its limbs were long, twisted, its back arched unnaturally. The claws scraped again

— SKRRRCHHH —

as it dragged them along the wall. Drool glistened from its sharp jaw, falling in thick drops onto the dirt with wet sounds

— plop… plop.

[Warning: Hostile Entity Identified.]

[Classification: Lesser Aberration.]

[Threat Level: Low-Medium.]

Samir swallowed hard. "Low-medium? That thing doesn't look low anything."

The monster's breath rattled with a low hiss

— Hhhhhhrrrrrrrhhh.

Its head turned around snapping toward him with unnatural speed. The glowing eyes locked onto his.

Samir's blood ran cold.

[Recommendation: Prepare for Engagement.]

The creature's claws dug into the ground, tearing up dirt with a harsh RRRRIP. Then it leapt forward, landing with a heavy THUD! The sound echoed through the estate walls.

Samir stumbled back, breath shaking. His fists clenched instinctively, but his pulse screamed at him to run.

The monster didn't charge yet. Instead, it stalked forward slowly, each step deliberate. Thmp. Thmp. Thmp. The sound of its claws dragging along the stone was like knives on glass.

"System…" Samir whispered. "…this wasn't part of the plan."

[Correction: Upgrade Process Pending. Conditions Required: Combat Engagement.]

Samir blinked. "Wait — are you saying I have to fight this thing to unlock upgrades?"

[Affirmation: Correct.]

A humorless laugh escaped his lips. "Of course. Why would it ever be easy?"

The monster snarled, saliva flying — SKREEEEEEHH!

Samir's instincts screamed. He dropped into a fighting stance, knees bent, fists raised. The night air grew heavy, filled with the mix of rustling leaves, distant creaks of the estate walls, and the beast's guttural breaths.

Every sound sharpened in his ears.

Wind howling through the gate.

Wood creaking in the rafters above.

The faint hum of Chaos thrumming like a heartbeat inside his skull.

He muttered under his breath, "Alright then… step one. Survive."

The monster's muscles tensed, claws digging deep into the dirt. Its glowing eyes narrowed.

Then, with a roar that rattled the air — RRAAAAAAAHHHHH! — it lunged.

The roar shook the night.

RRAAAAAHHHHH!

The monster lunged and his claws ripping at the ground as its body shot forward like a black blur.

Samir's stomach dropped. He dove sideways—

WHAMMM!

The beast crashed into the gate where he had been standing. then Stone cracked and dust flew into air and then Shards rained down.

Samir's breath came sharp with his chest burning. "Too close—"

The creature snapped its head toward him with his glowing eyes like fire pits. Drool dripped from its jagged teeth, sizzling when it hit the ground—pssshhht!

[Alert: Hostile Combat Confirmed.]

[Upgrade Protocol Engaging.]

The hum inside Samir's chest surged, pounding like a second heartbeat.

[Unlocked: Minor Strength Boost.]

[Unlocked: Pain Resistance Level 1.]

Heat spread through his veins and His body felt tighter, faster, like the weight on his muscles had been cut in half.

The beast charged again.

THUMP-THUMP-THUMP!

Samir braced. The claws slashed

—SWIISSH!—

barely missing his face then He ducked low with rolling across the dirt. His palms scraped against gravel burning.

He sprang back up and his fists clenched. Then His whole body buzzed with the new strength, but the fear still clawed at his throat.

The monster hissed

—SSSKRRRHHHH!—

and leapt again.

Samir met it halfway. His fist slammed into its jaw

—THUDDD!—

snapping the creature's head sideways. Pain shot up his arm, but the beast actually stumbled.

Samir blinked. "It worked?"

The monster growled, claws tearing long gashes in the dirt. Its movements grew wilder, faster.

Samir raised his fists again, forcing his breath steady. "Alright… let's finish this."

The creature pounced—SNAP! SNAP!—its teeth snapping inches from his throat. Samir shoved his elbow up—CRACK!—into its skull. The beast reeled.

He spotted the short blade strapped under the guard post. He lunged with grabbed it and spun just in time to meet the next attack.

SHHNK!

Steel cut deep into the monster's shoulder. Black blood splattered—hisssss!—burning the dirt where it fell. The smell of rot and metal filled the air, choking.

The beast shrieked—SKREEEEEEHHHH!—so loud his ears rang.

Samir gritted his teeth, shoving the blade deeper. "Stay down!"

The monster thrashed, claws raking across his chest—RIPPPP!—tearing fabric and leaving shallow cuts. Hot pain streaked through him, but the hum inside steadied him.

[Status: Wounds Detected. Pain Reduced by 30%.]

Samir spat blood and pushed harder. With a roar of his own, he drove the blade into the beast's throat.

KRSHHHH!

The monster gurgled, its movements faltering. Its claws scrabbled weakly at the ground—skkkrrrchhh—before finally collapsing in a heavy THUD.

Samir staggered back, chest heaving, blood dripping from his arm.

The air grew still again.

[Enemy Eliminated.]

[Experience Absorbed.]

[System Upgrade Complete.]

[Unlocked: Enhanced Reflexes – Level 1.]

[Unlocked: Status Vision – Limited Range.]

Faint glowing text flickered across his sight. For a second, he thought it was just exhaustion, but then he realized he could see more. His gaze shifted to the corpse—

[Target: Lesser Aberration – Deceased.]

[Strength: Moderate. Agility: Low. Threat Level: C.]

Samir's breathing slowed. "You're letting me see… details now?"

[Affirmation: Status Vision Active.]

He swiped sweat and blood from his face, staring down at the twitching corpse. Its skin still steamed where the blade had struck.

This wasn't an animal. This was something else. Something that didn't belong.

The wind rustled through the hedges, carrying the faint voices of servants from inside the estate.

"…did you hear that crash?"

"…something near the north-west gate…"

"…I swear I saw shadows moving—"

Samir froze, listening. The whispers were already spreading. No one had seen him fight. No one knew he had killed the thing. But rumors would grow.

[Observation: Rumors Spreading.]

[User Influence Increasing – Hidden.]

Samir glanced at the estate walls. Guards were moving along the parapets, torches bobbing. But none dared come close to the gate. They looked, they whispered, but they didn't act.

"…blood on the stones…"

"…but no body…"

"…maybe someone—or something—is protecting us…"

Samir's chest tightened. The idea hit him all at once. They thought someone mysterious was helping them. A protector in the shadows.

He wiped his blade on the monster's hide, then grabbed its twisted body. With effort, he dragged it toward the hedges, rolling it into the darkness. The corpse sank into the shadows, hidden from sight.

He muttered, "Let them wonder."

[Affirmation: Strategic Choice Effective.]

The whispers grew softer, carried by the night. No one had answers. Only fear, and the thought that someone unseen had fought back the darkness for them.

Samir leaned against the gate, breath still ragged. His body ached, cuts burning, but inside—the hum of Chaos pulsed strong, steady.

[Directive: Evolution in Progress.]

[Next Trial Approaching.]

Samir looked back toward the estate. The lights in the hall windows glowed faintly, nobles feasting and laughing, oblivious to what had just clawed at their walls.

He tightened his grip on the blade. "If they want a ghost protecting them… fine. I'll be their ghost."

The hum pulsed like quiet approval.

And above of all the night stayed restless.

Samir wiped the blood from his cheek, chest rising and falling with heavy breaths. The last monster's body hit the ground with a dull thud, its claws still twitching. The air smelled of iron and damp earth, and the faint echo of growls seemed to fade into silence.

[ SYSTEM: Upgrade complete. New functions unlocked. Hidden parameters revealed. ]

The voice rang sharper this time, louder, almost… alive. Samir's eyes narrowed as glowing text flickered before him, lines shifting faster than before. Something inside the system felt different, as if it was stretching, expanding beyond what it had been moments ago.

But just as he steadied himself, a new sound cut through the still night. Drip… drip… It wasn't water. It was thicker. He turned, realizing the monster's black blood wasn't just sinking into the soil — it was spreading, crawling outward like veins across the ground.

Samir froze. His grip tightened on the broken blade in his hand. For the first time, he wasn't sure if the fight was really over.

Then came the whisper. Soft. Faint. Carried by the wind.

"Not alone… never alone…"

He spun around, searching the shadows, but saw nothing. Only the night watching him back.

The system chimed again, cold and precise.

[ WARNING: Unknown interference detected. Source unidentified. ]

Samir's jaw clenched. Whoever — or whatever — had just spoken, it wasn't the system. And it wasn't a friend he could see.

The silence after was heavier than the battle itself, pressing on him like the weight of unseen eyes.
