Chapter 12 - “The Night They Saw Him”

The estate didn't wake the same way it used to.

The morning after the courtyard attack, fear clung to the walls like damp air. Guards patrolled more heavily, their boots striking against the stone in sharp rhythm. Servants hurried through the halls with their heads down, avoiding every dark corner as if shadows themselves could lash out.

Samir walked slowly across the main corridor, his steps quiet. Conversations dropped when he passed. People glanced at him and then quickly looked away. The whispers followed, drifting from corners and doorways.

"Something in the courtyard…"

"…blood but no body…"

"…someone's protecting us…"

He clenched his jaw. They were talking about him, though they didn't know it. And they couldn't. Not yet.

[System Alert: Status Expansion Active.]

[New Function: Human Analysis.]

[Detection Range: 10 meters.]

His breath caught. The world shifted, faint outlines flickering into view around the people closest to him. Servants in the hallway glowed with faint blue halos, each marked with words that pulsed faintly above their heads.

[Target: Servant – Loyal. Strength: Low.]

[Target: Guard – Nervous. Strength: Moderate.]

[Target: Maid – Afraid. Loyalty: Weak.]

Samir's throat tightened. "You're showing me… them?" he whispered.

[Affirmation: Status Expansion Reveals Attributes. Allies and Enemies Visible.]

His heart pounded. It wasn't just monsters anymore. He was seeing people—seeing what they felt, who they leaned toward, how strong they might stand if tested.

A guard turned the corner ahead. Words flickered above his head:

[Target: Guard – Obedient to Rajin. Strength: Moderate-High. Loyalty: Firm.]

Samir's hands curled into fists. "So that's how it is…"

The hum inside him pulsed steady, neither approving nor disapproving. Just waiting.

---

By noon, Samir found himself in the gardens. Priya was there again, as she often was, sitting beneath the willow tree with a book balanced on her lap. Her expression softened when she saw him, but something sharper hid behind her calm eyes.

He sat across from her, letting the silence linger before speaking. "You've heard them too, haven't you? The whispers."

Priya tilted her head, closing the book slowly. "Whispers are the estate's lifeblood. But lately…" Her voice dropped lower. "…they feel heavier."

Samir swallowed. The text flickered above her faintly.

[Target: Priya – Cautious Ally. Loyalty: Unstable. Strength: Moderate. Hidden Variable Detected.]

He stiffened. Hidden variable? What did that mean?

[Observation: Priya's Loyalty In Flux.]

[Recommendation: Strengthen Connection.]

Samir forced his voice calm. "They think someone is protecting them."

Priya's eyes stayed on him. "Are they wrong?"

The hum in his chest throbbed. His lips parted, but no words came. For a moment, he thought she might already know.

Instead, she closed her book and rose. "If someone is protecting us," she said quietly, "then I hope they know how to stay alive when the council starts asking questions."

She walked away before he could answer, her steps slow and measured. The faint text above her flickered once before vanishing.

Samir let out a shaky breath. "System… she knows something."

[Affirmation: Probability High.]

[Directive: Monitor Priya Closely.]

He leaned back against the tree trunk, the whispers from the estate ringing louder in his ears. If Priya was already guessing, then how long before Rajin did?

---

That evening, the great hall filled again for dinner. Gold plates gleamed, laughter echoed, and yet the air was heavy with suspicion. Samir slid into his seat, keeping his face neutral.

The words above the nobles flickered constantly in his vision.

[Target: Noble – Curious. Loyalty: Weak.]

[Target: Noble – Fearful. Strength: Low.]

[Target: Noble – Aligned with Rajin. Loyalty: Strong.]

Each one was like a knife, cutting through the surface of the feast. He could see now how fragile the estate really was, how thin the bonds between people ran.

And then his eyes landed on Rajin.

[Target: Rajin – Rival. Strength: High. Loyalty: Self. Hidden Variable Detected.]

Samir's pulse spiked. "Hidden… variable?"

[Affirmation: Rajin's System Status Unknown. Danger Level: Critical.]

He looked up just as Rajin raised his cup across the table. Their eyes locked, the smirk on Rajin's lips sharp as a blade.

The whispers in the hall swelled.

"…the shadow protector…"

"…a guardian in the dark…"

"…maybe it's him…"

Samir's grip tightened around his cup. If the whispers grew louder, if Rajin put the pieces together…

The hum in his chest pulsed again, stronger than ever.

[Directive: Evolution Path Demands Choice.]

[Option A: Stay Hidden. Remain the Shadow.]

[Option B: Step Forward. Claim Protector Role.]

Samir's breath shook. His reflection stared back from the wine in his cup. Shadow… or protector.

His decision would shape what came next.

The feast dragged on, but Samir barely touched his food. His eyes kept scanning the room, flicking between flickering texts only he could see. Strengths. Loyalties. Hidden variables.

The system's voice pulsed steady.

[Observation: Nobles Divided. Fear Rising.]

[Directive: Influence Opportunity Detected.]

Samir set his cup down carefully, his hand steady even as his chest burned. "You want me to push them now?" he whispered under his breath.

[Affirmation: Fear Creates Leverage. Leverage Creates Power.]

His jaw clenched. He wasn't ready. Not with Rajin's eyes sharp on him. Not with Priya already suspicious.

The chandeliers swayed faintly overhead. The hall's laughter rang too loud, brittle like glass ready to crack. And then—

THUD.

The sound came from beyond the doors. Heavy. Sharp. Like weight slamming into stone.

The laughter stopped. Every noble froze. Guards stiffened, hands gripping hilts.

Another sound followed. Scrrrrk—scratchhh—like claws dragging across the outer wall.

Samir's blood turned cold. He knew that sound too well.

[System Alert: Hostile Traces Detected.]

[Quantity: Multiple.]

[Threat Level: Medium.]

The nobles broke into panic. Some rose, others shouted, voices clashing. "Not again—!" "The walls—did you hear that?"

Rajin rose slowly, calm in the chaos. His smirk was gone, replaced with something colder. "Guards," he commanded. "With me."

The doors slammed open before they could move.

BAMMMM!

The torches flickered as three hulking shapes crawled into the hall. Skin stretched too tight over bone, claws digging into the polished floor, jaws snapping with wet crunching sounds.

Gasps filled the air. Plates clattered.

One noble shrieked. "Monsters—inside the estate!"

Samir's chair scraped as he rose. His heart pounded, but his body felt different this time—ready. Stronger.

[Upgrade Protocol Engaged.]

[Status Boost Active: Reflexes + Strength.]

The nearest monster lunged.

THUMPPP!

Its claws tore the table in half, silverware scattering. Nobles screamed, scrambling backward. Rajin drew his blade with a hiss of steel, cutting down one servant who panicked into his path just to clear space.

Samir's blood boiled.

"System," he whispered, "show me their weak points."

[Analysis Complete.]

[Target One – Core in Chest. Target Two – Neck Weakness. Target Three – Hind Leg Joint.]

The words burned bright in his sight. His fists clenched. For the first time, he wasn't stumbling blind.

The first monster roared—RAAAAHHHHH!—its claws swinging wide. Samir ducked under with a sharp roll, shards of wood cutting his arms. His hand shot upward—CRACK!—slamming into its chest. He felt bone give under his fist.

The beast shrieked, staggering back. Black blood splattered across the floor.

Gasps filled the hall. Nobles stared. Guards hesitated.

Rajin's voice cut sharp. "You—"

Samir didn't hear the rest. The second monster lunged, jaws snapping—SNAP! SNAP! He pivoted, Chaos guiding his body, the system's text burning across his vision.

[Directive: Exploit Weakness.]

His elbow slammed into its throat—THUD!—then he followed with a sharp strike to its jaw. The monster reeled, gagging, black spit flying. Samir grabbed a broken piece of table leg and drove it upward—KRSHHHK!—into its neck.

The hall erupted. Nobles scrambled, voices overlapping in fear. Some screamed for guards, others for Rajin. But all eyes turned when the third monster leapt straight for the head table—straight for Lord Varun.

Samir's chest froze. His father hadn't even moved yet.

[Directive: Immediate Response Required.]

Samir didn't think. His legs burned, pushing him faster than he'd ever moved. He dove across the table—CRASH!—plates shattering under him. His hand shot out, catching the beast mid-air by its joint. With a roar, he twisted—SNAPPPP!—the leg cracked, the monster shrieking as it collapsed into the feast.

Chaos pulsed inside him, alive.

[Observation: Enemy Control Achieved. Opportunity to Finish.]

Samir gritted his teeth, grabbed the beast's skull, and slammed it against the table. Once. Twice. CRACK! CRACK! Until it stilled, black blood soaking the feast.

Silence followed.

Everyone stared at him.

Lord Varun's eyes were wide, his hand frozen halfway to his blade. Rajin stood with his sword dripping, but his gaze was locked only on Samir.

Whispers broke the silence.

"…he stopped them…"

"…bare-handed…"

"…the shadow protector…"

Samir's breath came heavy. His arms shook. But the hum inside his chest stayed strong.

[Enemy Group Eliminated.]

[System Upgrade Complete.]

[Unlocked: Human Status Scan – Deeper Readings Available.]

[Unlocked: Adaptive Combat Instincts.]

Samir swayed, sweat dripping down his temple. He looked at his hands, then the shattered hall.

Every noble was staring. Every servant frozen. And Rajin… Rajin's eyes burned, sharp and dangerous.

Samir's father finally stood, his voice heavy. "Enough."

But the whispers didn't stop. They clung to the air, louder than Varun's command.

"…he's not cursed…"

"…he's saving us…"

"…a protector…"

Samir swallowed hard. His reflection gleamed faintly in the spilled wine on the table. His eyes glowed with system light.

For the first time, he realized the truth—he couldn't stay hidden anymore. Not when the estate itself had seen.

[Observation: User Influence Expanding Rapidly.]

[Directive: Choose Path Soon.]

Samir clenched his fists. The whispers had found him. And Rajin's gaze promised this was only the beginning.
