Chapter 11 - The Protector’s Trial

The estate awoke with uneasy. It wasn't the chatter of morning or the clatter of servants moving through the halls. It was the silence between each sound. A silence heavy enough that even laughter at the breakfast tables died too quickly, leaving behind critical air.

Samir walked through it like a shadow among shadows. His steps were steady and his face was calm, but inside his chest the hum of Chaos never stilled. Every beat reminded him what he now carried with him.

[System Active: Status Expansion Enabled.]

[Scanning Range: 10 meters.]

The air around him shimmered faintly and unseen to others. He blinked and then words flickered across his vision.

[Target: House Guard – Nervous.]

[Strength: Low. Loyalty: Divided.]

[Target: Servant – Fearful.]

[Strength: None. Loyalty: Neutral.]

Samir's breath caught. He was looking at people the same way he had seen the monster. Not their faces but their truths. there Strength,Loyalty and Fear.

He clenched his fists. "You weren't kidding," he whispered under his breath. "You really are turning me into something else."

[Affirmation: Transformation Continues.]

A servant passing by dropped her tray then the plates clatter against the floor. She bent quickly with muttering apologies but Samir barely heard her. His eyes locked on the faint red flicker above her head—

[Loyalty: Betrayal Risk – Medium.]

His throat tightened. He forced himself to look away and keep walking. The whispers he had feared for so long were no longer just words. Now he could see the truth behind them.

---

The whispers followed him still.

"…he looks different…"

"…sharper, colder…"

"…is he the one in the dark…?"

At the edge of the hall, Priya waited. Her gaze held steady as he approached. No fear in her eyes. No whispers on her lips.

He swallowed and let his vision brush over her.

[Target: Priya – Calm.]

[Strength: Moderate. Loyalty: High.]

Relief loosened the knot in his chest. At least she was still real.

"You've been listening again," she said quietly. "Every time you walk these halls it's seems like your eyes are elsewhere."

Samir hesitated and then answered, "I'm seeing more than I should."

She studied him. "Then use it. Don't let it crush you."

The hum inside him pulsed.

[Observation: Loyalty Variable Strengthening.]

Samir almost smiled but the weight in his chest refused to ease. Not while danger still clawed at the gates.

---

That evening, the council dined together. Nobles filled the long hall, chandeliers spilling golden light across polished wood. The air around there reeked with spices, meat and hidden fear.

Samir sat in silence with letting his vision shift again. Words appeared above his heads, one after another.

[Target: Lord Karun – Prideful. Loyalty: Low.]

[Target: Elder Mahira – Watchful. Loyalty: Split.]

[Target: Rajin Dharva – Dominant. Loyalty: Ruthless. Threat Level: High.]

Rajin's smirk widened when their eyes met. Samir looked away, but not before the system whispered—

[Warning: Rajin Monitoring User Closely.]

Samir's hand tightened around his cup. If Rajin ever learned the truth then the whispers wouldn't protect him but instead that they would bury him.

Then Priya's hand brushed his clothes under the table, steady and brief. His pulse slowed. For a moment, he let himself breathe.

---

That night, the estate seemed quieter than usual. Too quiet.

Samir sat at his window, staring out at the black stretch of trees. The whispers hadn't stopped yet. They were everywhere.

"...never alone…"

"…watching…"

"…waiting…"

The system cut through them.

[Directive: Scan Active.]

[Status Expansion Running.]

[Result: Unknown Entity Detected – Within Estate Walls.]

Samir froze. His eyes darted across the courtyard, but saw only the fountains and the hedges shifting in the breeze.

His breath quickened. "Inside the walls?"

[Affirmation: Threat Present.]

[Classification: Aberration Signature – Concealed.]

Samir's grip tightened on the windowsill. His wounds still ached from the last fight but there was no time to rest.

He whispered into the night, "Then show me where."

The hum inside him pulsed with steady and guiding him.

[Directive: Next Trial Begins.]

The courtyard was quiet but not in a peaceful way. The torches burned low and shadows stretching long against the stone. Samir stood tense with tight fist and the hum of Chaos pressing steady in his chest.

From the far end of the courtyard, there was a low growl rolled across the stones.

— Grrrrrrrrrrr —

The beast stepped into the light. Its body was bent and his claws scraping against the ground — skrrrchhhk — sparks snapping with every drag. Drool hung from its jaw, dripping into the dirt with wet plops.

[Warning: Hostile Entity Detected.]

[Classification: Aberration – Variant.]

[Threat Level: Medium.]

Samir drew a slow breath, sweat slicking his palms. His heart raced. "Bigger than the last one…"

The monster's eyes glowed bright yellow, narrowing as it locked on him. It hissed — Hhhhhhhrrrrhh! — and charged.

THUMP-THUMP-THUMP!

Samir rolled sideways, dirt scraping his arms. The claws slammed into the ground where he had stood, stone splitting with a crack. He scrambled up, fists raised.

The beast lunged again. Samir swung, his knuckles cracking against its jaw — THUD! The creature stumbled back with shaking its head. Black saliva sprayed the ground, sizzling where it landed.

[Observation: Direct Impact Effective. Adaptation: Ongoing.]

"Yeah? Well, it still hits harder," Samir muttered.

The monster whipped around and slashed — SWIISSH! — claws slicing through the air. One caught his shoulder, tearing fabric, leaving shallow cuts. Pain burned, but the hum inside steadied him.

[Status: Minor Wounds Detected.]

[Pain Reduced – Resistance Active.]

Samir gritted his teeth with forcing his breath steady. "Not slowing me down."

He ducked low as the beast struck again. This time, his foot shot out — WHAM! — kicking its knee. The leg bent sideways, the beast stumbling with a guttural shriek — SKREEEEEEHHH!

Samir didn't waste the moment. His eyes darted to the broken fence post nearby. He dashed, grabbed it, and spun as the beast charged.

"Let's see how you like this."

He shoved the splintered wood forward — SHHHNK! — ramming it into the creature's side. The beast howled, black blood gushing over his hands, hot and foul. The smell of rot burned his throat.

It staggered but didn't fall. Instead, it clawed at him wildly — SLASH-SLASH! One strike scraped his ribs, another tore across his arm. Blood spilled warm and sticky down his skin.

Samir's breath came sharp, his chest burning. "Damn stubborn thing…"

[Alert: User Damage Increasing.]

[Recommendation: End Fight Quickly.]

"Working on it!"

The beast lunged again, jaws snapping — SNAP-SNAP! Samir shoved the wood deeper into its chest, pushing with every bit of strength. His muscles screamed, his body shaking, but he didn't stop.

The post drove through, bursting from its back with a wet crack — KRSHHH!

The beast choked — GHHHRRKK — its claws scraping weakly at his arm before it collapsed with a heavy THUD. Black blood pooled across the stones, hissing as it spread.

Samir staggered back, gasping, his hands dripping with dark sludge. His whole body shook, but he stayed standing.

The hum inside him pulsed strong.

[Enemy Eliminated.]

[Experience Absorbed.]

[System Upgrade Complete.]

[Unlocked: Enhanced Reflexes – Level 2.]

[Unlocked: Basic Weapon Mastery – Blunt Arms.]

Samir blinked, chest rising hard. "Weapon… mastery? You mean I actually know how to use this now?"

[Affirmation: Combat Data Integrated.]

He looked down at the broken post still in his grip. His hands adjusted automatically, his stance shifting without thought. It felt natural now. Like training he never had, but somehow remembered.

Samir let out a rough laugh. "Guess fists aren't the only option anymore."

The courtyard grew quiet again. Only the crackle of torches, the hiss of black blood burning on stone, and his own breath filled the night.

But he knew better. This wasn't the end. It was only the beginning.

[Directive: Remain Alert.]

[Next Threat: Pending.]

Samir wiped his face with his sleeve, chest still tight. "Then let them come. I'll be ready."

The hum inside answered steady, almost like approval.

And that's where we'll pause this chapter. Samir has survived another night, but the estate is changing around him. The whispers are louder, the threats are sharper, and the line between protector and hunted grows thinner.
