Chapter 6 - First Day at the Academy

The Verdant Academy's stone courtyard sparkled under the morning sun, its vine-covered walls pulsing with a soft glow. Kai stood in the center, his Starborn Cub bouncing at his side, its silver fur shining like a starry night. His black hair, streaked with silver, clung to his sweaty forehead, and his green eyes burned with excitement. The star-shaped scar on his left hand pulsed, matching the cub's warm glow. His Thorned Viper slithered nearby, its green scales blending with the grass, now moving smoothly with their bond. His blue robes, pinned with a Novice medallion, felt like a new start, but the pressure of being a student pressed hard.

The trials were over, and Kai and Lila had earned their Novice rank, their teamwork in the Verdant Crucible proving their strength against a corrupted Stonefang Boar. The boar's creepy red eyes and dark power stuck in Kai's mind, a sign of something bad growing. Today was his first day at Verdant Academy, a chance to train and grow stronger. The cub yipped, wings twitching, eager for action. Kai gripped his Binding Cord, its runes glowing faintly, ready to learn.

Lila jogged up, her auburn ponytail bouncing, blue streaks in her hair catching the light. Her hazel eyes sparkled with mischief, and her green robes fluttered as her Windwing Sparrow perched on her arm. Her Windchime Pendant shone, boosting her Windslash and Windstep moves. "Late already, Kai?" she teased, nudging his shoulder. "Thought you'd be shining that medallion all day." Kai grinned, her playful jab calming his nerves. "Just waiting for you to catch up, Lila."

Sylvara strode into the courtyard, her red hair blazing under her Ember Crown. Her amber eyes burned with strength, and her crimson robes glowed with flame runes. Her Blazefury Drake followed, its fiery scales casting heat. "Novices!" she called, her voice sharp but kind. "Today, you learn control. Pair up, fight with your beasts, and show me your Essence Flow. Weak bonds break in battle." Her eyes locked on Kai's cub, a spark of interest in them. Kai's scar tingled, her warning about his cub's power echoing.

Lila whispered, "Sylvara's tough, Kai. Don't mess up." Kai nodded, the cub nuzzling him. Sylvara clapped her hands, her drake's flames flaring. "Kai, Lila—pair up!" The other Novices scattered, forming pairs, as Kai and Lila stepped into a fighting circle. The cub bounded forward, viper slithering beside it. Lila's sparrow took flight, circling with a gust. "No holding back, Kai," Lila said, her grin sharp but warm.

Kai gripped his Binding Cord, his scar glowing as he channeled Essence. "Bring it, Lila!" The fight started with a flash. Lila's pendant shone, her sparrow diving with a Windslash—a sharp gust slicing toward Kai's beasts. Kai focused, his Essence flowing smoother after the trials. "Cub, Starflare!" The cub's wings flashed, a burst of starlight hitting the Windslash, scattering sparks across the courtyard. The viper lunged, its Venomcoil Strike aiming for the sparrow, but Lila's Windstep made her a blur, her bird dodging easily.

The Novices watched, whispering excitedly. Sylvara's eyes followed every move, her drake's tail flicking. Kai synced with the cub's heartbeat, his scar warm. "Viper, strike!" The serpent darted, forcing Lila's sparrow to weave. The cub's Starflare burst again, grazing the sparrow's wing. Lila grinned, her pendant flashing. "Not bad, Kai!" Her Windslash spiraled, pushing Kai back. Their moves mixed, starlight and wind creating a storm of light and air.

Kai's control sharpened, his Essence steady. He felt Lila's rhythm, their teamwork from the trials shining through. "Cub, together!" The cub and viper attacked as one, Starflare and Venomcoil aiming for the sparrow. Lila's Windstep spun her away, her sparrow's Windslash creating a whirlwind to block them. The fight stretched, their Essence clashing in bright bursts. Kai's scar burned, his bond with the cub stronger than ever.

A loud hum broke the fight, chilling the air. The cub growled, its fur standing up. Lila's sparrow screeched, landing on her shoulder. The ground shook, and a shadow moved at the courtyard's edge. A woman stepped forward, her long black hair braided with dark runes, violet eyes sharp. Her dark robes hugged her slim form, and a Voidfang Scepter glowed at her side, pulsing with strange power. Kai's scar throbbed, the cub baring its teeth. Lila's pendant glowed, her sparrow tense. "Who's that?" Lila whispered.

Sylvara's drake roared, flames flashing. "Veyra!" she snapped. "What do you want here?" The woman—Veyra—smiled, her voice smooth but cold. "Just watching, Sylvara. That Starborn Cub's… interesting." Her eyes locked on Kai's, sending a shiver through him. Before Sylvara could answer, the ground shook again. A corrupted beast—a Common Shadowmaw Raven, its feathers dark with veins, eyes glowing red—swooped from the sky, screeching.

The Novices screamed, scattering. Sylvara's drake unleashed a flame burst, but Veyra moved faster, her scepter glowing. A shadowy tendril shot out, pinning the raven mid-air. Kai and Lila acted on instinct, their beasts joining in. The cub's Starflare lit the courtyard, staggering the raven, while Lila's Windslash cut its wing. Veyra's tendril crushed the raven, its body fading into mist. She smirked at Kai. "Nice moves, boy," she said, vanishing into the shadows.

Sylvara's eyes narrowed, her drake snarling. "Training's done for today," she said. "Kai, Lila, stay sharp. That raven wasn't random." She walked off, leaving whispers in the air. Lila grabbed Kai's arm, her voice low. "Veyra's trouble, Kai. And that raven… it's after your cub." Kai nodded, the cub's warmth calming him. "I know, Lila. Something's coming."

They headed to the dorms, the cub nuzzling Kai's chest, the viper slithering beside him. Lila's hand lingered on his arm, her hazel eyes soft but worried. "We'll figure it out, Kai," she said, almost shyly. Kai smiled, his scar pulsing. "Yeah, Lila. Together." The courtyard grew quiet, but Veyra's violet eyes and the raven's red glow stuck in his mind. The academy was a new start, but danger was close.

In his dorm, Kai sat with the cub, its Starflare lighting the room. Lila leaned against the door, her sparrow perched nearby. "You're gonna be trouble, Kai," she teased, her voice warm. Kai grinned, the viper coiling at his feet. "Good thing you're here, Lila." The night was calm, but the shadows felt alive, watching.
