Chapter 12 - Duel Under Starlight

The Verdant Academy's dueling arena glowed under a star-filled sky, its stone benches packed with Novices and instructors cheering loudly. Kai stood on the dirt field, his Starborn Cub bouncing at his side, its silver fur sparkling like a constellation. His black hair, streaked with silver, clung to his sweaty forehead, and his green eyes burned with determination. The star-shaped scar on his left hand pulsed, matching the cub's warm glow. His Thorned Viper slithered nearby, its green scales glinting in the torchlight, moving smoothly with their strengthened bond. His blue robes, pinned with a Novice medallion, fluttered in the cool night breeze, carrying the weight of his growing reputation.

Five weeks into Verdant Academy, Kai's skills were sharper than ever. The Crystal of Binding had amplified his Starveil Cloak and unlocked Starpulse Wave, a powerful move that shook the ground with celestial light. Sylvara's training pushed him to his limits, and Lila's teamwork kept him grounded. Veyra's shadowy interventions, like stopping the corrupted Gloomfang Bat, lingered in his mind—her violet eyes and cryptic words about his cub hinted at a deeper mystery. Tonight's duel, part of the academy's weekly ranking matches, pitted Kai against a top Novice to prove his growth. The cub yipped, its tiny wings twitching, ready for a fight.

Lila stood near the arena's edge, her auburn ponytail swaying, blue streaks in her hair catching the starlight. Her hazel eyes sparkled with excitement, and her green robes moved with the breeze as her Windwing Sparrow perched on her arm, its feathers ruffling softly. Her Windchime Pendant glowed, boosting her Windslash and Windstep moves. "Don't choke, Kai," she teased, flashing a playful grin. Kai smirked, her confidence fueling him. "Just watch me shine, Lila."

Sylvara stepped onto the platform, her red hair blazing under her Ember Crown, its glow casting shadows across the arena. Her amber eyes burned with intensity, and her crimson robes shimmered with flame runes. Her Blazefury Drake loomed behind, its fiery scales radiating heat that warmed the cool air. "Novices!" she called, her voice cutting through the cheers. "This duel tests your control and bond. Fight smart, not wild. Kai, face Riven." Her eyes locked on Kai's cub, a mix of pride and caution in her gaze.

Riven, a tall Novice with sharp eyes, stepped forward, his Common Stonefang Rhino snorting, its rocky hide tough as iron. Kai's scar tingled, the cub nuzzling him as he gripped the Crystal of Binding shard, its warmth pulsing in his hand. Lila whispered from the sidelines, "He's tough, Kai. Use your head." Kai nodded, his focus sharpening as Sylvara raised her hand. "Start!"

Riven's rhino charged, its Earthshatter Stomp shaking the ground, sending dirt flying. Kai channeled Essence, his scar glowing as he synced with the cub's heartbeat. "Cub, Starpulse Wave!" The cub's wings flashed, a ripple of celestial light bursting outward, staggering the rhino. Kai followed up, "Viper, Venomshade Bind!" The serpent slithered forward, its dark venom coiling around the rhino's legs, slowing its charge with shadowy pulses.

Riven shouted, his rhino breaking free, its Stonecrash Charge aimed at Kai. The cub darted in front, its Starveil Cloak shimmering, blocking the hit with a starry shield. Kai dodged, sweat beading on his forehead. "Viper, strike!" The viper lunged, its Venomshade Bind tightening, draining the rhino's strength. The cub's Starpulse Wave hit again, a glowing arc that cracked the rhino's hide, making it stumble.

The crowd roared, Novices leaning forward, eyes wide. Sylvara watched closely, her drake's tail flicking. Lila cheered, her sparrow chirping excitedly. Riven gritted his teeth, his rhino unleashing a Stoneburst Roar, a wave of rocky shards flying toward Kai's beasts. Kai's scar burned, his Essence steady. "Cub, Starveil!" The cub's starry cloak flared, deflecting the shards, while the viper slithered low, avoiding the attack. Kai pushed harder, "Cub, Starpulse Wave!" The celestial ripple hit the rhino's flank, knocking it back.

Riven's commands grew frantic, but Kai's bond held strong. "Viper, together!" The viper's Venomshade Bind merged with the cub's Starpulse Wave, a glowing wave of venom and starlight that slammed into the rhino, sending it crashing to the ground. Riven raised his hands, signaling defeat. The crowd erupted, chanting Kai's name. Sylvara nodded, her eyes gleaming with approval. "Well done, Kai. You're advancing fast."

Lila ran over, her grin wide. "Knew you'd win, Kai!" she said, nudging his shoulder, her hazel eyes bright. Kai smirked, the cub nuzzling him. "Thanks for the cheer, Lila." Her hand lingered on his arm, a soft warmth in her touch that made his heart skip.

A deep hum broke the cheers, chilling the air like a shadow falling over the arena. The cub growled, its fur standing up, wings trembling. Lila's sparrow screeched, landing on her arm. The ground shook, and a corrupted beast emerged—a Common Ironclaw Vulture, its feathers dark with veins, eyes glowing a menacing red. Its Essence felt heavy, twisting the air around it. The crowd screamed, scattering to the benches.

Sylvara's drake roared, flames crackling, but a shadowy tendril shot from the arena's edge, pinning the vulture mid-flight. Veyra stepped forward, her long black hair braided with dark runes, violet eyes sharp and unreadable. Her dark robes hugged her slim form, and her Voidfang Scepter pulsed with eerie power, casting a faint glow. "These beasts are getting bold," she said, her voice smooth but cold. The tendril crushed the vulture, its body dissolving into dark mist.

Kai's cub growled, its starlight flaring, wary of her presence. Lila's pendant glowed, her sparrow tense. "Why do you keep showing up, Veyra?" Lila asked, stepping forward, her voice sharp with suspicion. Sylvara's drake snarled, its flames flaring brighter. "Leave, Veyra," she warned, her voice hard as steel. Veyra smirked, her eyes locked on Kai's cub. "Your Starborn's a magnet, Kai. Better watch it." She melted into the shadows, leaving a cold chill that lingered.

Eryndra appeared, her silver hair glowing like moonlight, sapphire eyes narrowing as her Starlight Owl hooted softly. "The corruption hunts your cub, Kai," she said, her voice calm but heavy. "Your Starpulse Wave is strong, but you'll need more." Sylvara nodded, her amber eyes stern. "Keep training, Kai. Danger's close." She dismissed the crowd, her drake's heat fading as she turned away.

Lila grabbed Kai's arm, her hazel eyes wide with worry. "Veyra's bad news, Kai. That vulture was after your cub." Kai nodded, the cub's warmth calming his racing heart. "We'll handle it, Lila," he said, his voice steady. As they walked to the dorms, Lila's hand brushed his, her eyes softening. "We're tougher than those beasts, Kai," she said quietly, a small smile tugging at her lips. Kai returned the smile, his scar pulsing gently. "Yeah, Lila. Together."

In the dorms, Kai sat on his bed, practicing Starpulse Wave, the cub's light pulsing through the Crystal of Binding, casting starry patterns on the walls. Lila leaned against the doorframe, her sparrow perched on her knee, its feathers ruffling softly. "You're getting too good, Kai," she teased, her voice warm and almost shy. Kai grinned, the viper coiling lazily at his feet. "Couldn't do it without you, Lila." The night was quiet, but the vulture's red eyes and Veyra's smirk lingered like a storm waiting to break.
