The cafeteria should have gone back to normal after the fight. But it didn't.
The noise of chatter, the scrape of trays, the bursts of laughter — all of it returned in patches, but thinner, sharper. Like the whole room was speaking under its breath.
Because no one could shake what they had just seen.
Vin Jin carried away by his lackeys, nose bent out of shape, mumbling curses through bloody lips.Zack Lee, the school's self-proclaimed fighter king, sitting pale and defeated, his chest heaving with every breath. And in the middle of it all — Seong Min, calm, untouched, eyes half-lidded as if none of it mattered.
It was the kind of scene that burrowed into memory. One everyone here would retell later — in whispers, in exaggerations, in fear.
Daniel Park sat stiff at his table, his untouched lunch congealing on the tray. His hands shook faintly on the edge of the wood.
He couldn't stop replaying it. Zack — the guy who was supposed to be his shield, his rival, maybe even his hope — had been broken. Not beaten in a brawl, but broken like a machine dismantled piece by piece.
Seong Min's movements had been surgical. Calculated. Detached.
Daniel thought he had known what strength looked like. He had grown up admiring it, chasing it, envying it. But this wasn't strength.
This was inevitability.
His throat went dry. If Zack can't do it… if even Zack crumbles… then what chance do I have?
The answer hollowed him out.
None.
Around the room, students couldn't keep quiet.
"Zack didn't even touch him.""It was like… like a cat playing with a mouse.""Dog Pound, then Zack… who's left?"
Every whisper carved deeper into Zack's pride. He sat slumped against the bench, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles went bone-white.
For once, his grin was gone.
"Idiot."
The word cut through the whispers.
Everyone turned.
Mira Kim walked forward, her steps sharp, her presence heavy enough to silence the cafeteria again.
She crouched down in front of Zack, her arms folded, her eyes steady and cold.
"You rushed in without thinking. All pride, no brain. You should know better."
Zack groaned, forcing a crooked grin through the pain. "Tch… Like I'd back down from a fight. That's not me."
Mira's expression didn't shift. "And look where it got you." She gestured at the crowd staring. "Flat on the floor in front of everyone."
Zack flinched. His teeth clenched, his jaw aching more from the words than the blows.
Mira leaned closer, lowering her voice, though everyone close enough could still hear.
"It wasn't strength that beat you. It was control. He doesn't waste anything. You should stop trying to beat him…"
Her gaze flicked toward Seong Min, who stood silently with his hands in his pockets, unreadable.
"…and learn from him instead."
The words hit harder than any punch.
For a moment Zack couldn't breathe. His pride wanted to explode, to shout, to throw himself at Seong Min again just to prove her wrong.
But the truth was there. And it stung worse than his bruises.
At another table, Crystal Choi's fork scraped faintly against porcelain.
Mira Kim.
Her lips pressed into a flawless smile, but her nails bit into her palm beneath the tablecloth.
Zoe's brazen flirting earlier had irritated her. Yui's coy little test had unsettled her. But Mira…
Mira wasn't shallow. She wasn't playing. She had looked straight at Seong Min and acknowledged his strength.
Out loud.
Crystal's pride burned hot, acid in her veins.
Her gaze flicked toward Seong Min. Calm, unreadable, that same faint smirk tugging at his lips. He didn't need to say anything — because everyone was saying it for him.
And Crystal hated that more than anything.
But then there was silence again.
Not because Mira had left, not because Zack stayed down. But because of the girl who hadn't moved since she walked in.
Mary Kim.
She stood near the cafeteria entrance, arms folded, her posture calm but heavy. She hadn't said a word. She hadn't needed to.
Her gaze stayed locked on Seong Min.
Unblinking. Measuring.
Whispers rippled quietly:
"Mary's here…""She's watching him…""Wait… is she actually going to fight him?"
Even Zoe and Yui froze mid-breath, their little games forgotten as they followed Mary's line of sight.
The air between them wasn't curiosity. It wasn't flirting. It was sharp. Heavy.
Predator recognizing predator.
Finally, Mary spoke.
"You're not what they say."
The words landed heavy.
Seong Min tilted his head slightly. His smirk curved. "And what do they say?"
"That you're a rumor. A shadow. A story people tell to scare themselves." Her voice was calm, but her eyes didn't waver. "But you're real. Too real."
Seong Min's smirk deepened. "Is that disappointment I hear?"
Gasps flickered through the room. Nobody — nobody — spoke to Mary Kim like that.
But Mary didn't flinch.
"Disappointment?" she repeated, stepping closer. "No. Caution."
Her steps echoed. Each one cut the room tighter.
"You fight too clean," she continued, her eyes narrowing. "No wasted motion. No hesitation. That's not how teenagers fight. That's how killers fight."
The cafeteria buzzed faintly, a mix of fear and awe.
Seong Min's violet eyes glinted. "Sharp eyes. But tell me…" He let his gaze trace her frame, the subtle tension in her shoulders, the precision in her stance. "Do you see the same thing when you look in the mirror?"
Mary's jaw tightened.
He had struck something. She did fight like that. Calculated. Cold. Efficient. And she knew it.
"You're dangerous," Mary said finally. "Not because you're strong. Because you don't care."
Seong Min chuckled softly, leaning back just enough to look relaxed. "And that scares you?"
"No." Mary's voice sharpened. "It means I'll be ready."
The silence pressed heavier than fists.
For the first time, Seong Min's smirk faded — not into weakness, but into something colder.Interest.
Mary turned then, striding past the crowd. The students parted without realizing, instinctively moving out of her path.
Just like they did for him.
Seong Min watched her leave.
Then he chuckled under his breath.
Interesting.
That Night
The streets outside J High hummed with neon. Laughter spilled from bars, cars rumbled past, the air cool and restless.
Seong Min walked alone, hands tucked in his pockets, his steps steady.
But the weight of the day lingered.Mira's words. Zack's fall. Mary's stare. Crystal's silent fury.
The board was shifting. And every piece was turning toward him.
"Seong Min."
The voice was sharp, cutting through the hum of the street.
He didn't need to turn to know who it was.
Crystal Choi.
Her heels clicked against the pavement as she approached, blazer sharp, hair perfect, posture queenlike as always. But her eyes betrayed her — burning, restless, unsettled.
"You enjoy this, don't you?" she asked coldly. "Watching them circle you. Letting them whisper. Making them bend without you lifting a finger."
Seong Min smirked faintly. "Maybe I do."
Crystal stepped closer, arms folded, her pride wrapped tight around her.
"You think this makes you untouchable? That calm, those eyes — it's not power. It's arrogance. And arrogance breaks."
Seong Min tilted his head. "Then why test me? Why send Yui?"
Her composure cracked for a breath. The pause was brief, but it was enough.
"You wanted me to fail," Seong Min said softly. "You wanted proof I was just like the rest. But now…" His violet gaze flicked over her, catching the faint tremor in her hand. "…you're the one restless."
Crystal's breath hitched, her pride clawing against her chest. She forced a brittle smile onto her lips.
"You might fool them," she said, her voice low, "but you won't fool me."
She spun on her heel before he could answer, heels clicking fast and sharp into the night.
Seong Min watched her go, the faintest laugh escaping his lips.
Elsewhere
A different rhythm echoed in another part of the city.
Goo Kim leaned against a lamppost, lollipop between his teeth, the neon glow painting sharp shadows across his grin.
He had been watching. All day.
"Seong Min, huh?" he muttered, pulling the candy free with a pop. "You've made quite the mess in such a short time. Rumors, fear, broken toys all over the floor."
His grin widened.
"And I like messes."
He twirled the lollipop between his fingers, eyes glinting dangerously.
"Let's see what kind of monster you really are."
The night swallowed his laughter.
