Chapter 28 - Chapter 27 – Fractures

The hospital smelled of antiseptic and stale coffee.

Zack sat propped up on the bed, both arms wrapped in heavy casts. His grin was sharp as ever, but it didn't reach his eyes.

"Don't look at me like that," he muttered as Mira dabbed the corner of his mouth with a tissue after feeding him porridge. "It's not that bad. I'll heal. Arms break, that's what they do."

Mira's hands paused. Her smile was faint, practiced. "You're impossible."

But inside, her chest twisted. Every time she blinked, she saw it again.

Zeus's hand on her collar. The sharp crack of his ribs breaking under Seong Min's calm fist. The violet light in those eyes.

And then Zack charging in, blood dripping, swinging with both arms already broken, refusing to stop.

Two shadows.One terrifying.One loyal.

Mira looked down at Zack, her throat tight. Gratitude burned for him, bright and certain. But she couldn't silence the gnawing thought of Seong Min.

Zack caught her silence. His grin flickered. "Mira… don't worry. I'll protect you. Always."

She forced a smile. But she didn't answer.

Outside, the sun hung low over J High's courtyard. Daniel sat alone on the bench, staring at his hands.

He had tried. He really had.But every path ended the same.

Seong Min.

That calm, surgical violence. That weight pressing down on everyone. Daniel couldn't even imagine standing against it. And now even Mira…

His stomach twisted. He had seen her expression when Seong Min walked out of that storeroom. Not fear. Not relief. Something else. Something Daniel couldn't name but hated all the same.

Why him? Why always him?

Daniel's hands clenched into fists. For the first time in his life, he wanted power more than anything. Not to protect himself. But to stop being irrelevant.

Crystal sat in her father's study, staring at her reflection in the dark glass of the window.

Her nails tapped against the armrest, too sharp, too restless.

She had sent Yui. She had watched Zoe throw herself at him. She had seen Mira's shaken eyes after the retreat.

And through it all, Seong Min hadn't bent.

Her pride told her to look away. To dismiss it.But her curiosity, that hateful ember, burned hotter.

She could tell Charles. She could whisper his name and watch her father's machinery move.

But part of her resisted. Because doing so would mean admitting something she wasn't ready to admit.

That he haunted her thoughts.

"Damn you," she muttered under her breath.

Mary Kim leaned against the railing outside the gym, arms folded, gaze steady.

She had heard the rumors. Zeus taken down. Zack hospitalized. Mira shaken.

And in the middle of it all — Seong Min.

She had seen him from a distance before. His posture, his gaze, the way students moved around him without realizing it.

Now, watching him step out of the classroom that afternoon, she understood.

It wasn't bravado. It wasn't strength alone.

It was inevitability.

Mary's lips curved faintly. "Interesting."

She straightened, tugging her jacket over her shoulder, and walked away. For now, she would watch.

Predator to predator.

That evening, Seong Min sat on the rooftop, the city's glow spread beneath him.

The retreat was already old news. Students whispered, rumors twisted, but it all ended the same way.

His name.

Zack had his broken arms and his moment of loyalty. Daniel had his spiral into desperation. Mira had her confusion. Crystal her obsession. Zoe and Yui their hunger. And now Mary had entered the board.

Seong Min smirked faintly, violet eyes reflecting the night.

Perfect.

The board was filling. And soon, the game would reach beyond J High.
