Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 : Shadows of the of the Crown

Chapter 14 – Shadows of the Crown

The night was still burning from the battle's aftermath. The trees closest to the crater had turned to charcoal; ash drifted in the air like black snow. The faint, bitter tang of void energy lingered, a haunting reminder of the thing they had just slain.

Chen Yue sat on a cracked boulder, his breathing uneven, each exhale sending a shiver down his spine. His meridians screamed with every small movement, like molten needles crawling through his veins. The System's recovery protocol was working, but at this rate, he'd need at least two days to regain full combat capability—time they didn't have.

Ayara lay beside him, her head on his lap, fast asleep. Her once-radiant glow had dimmed, replaced by the pale softness of exhaustion. Her delicate fingers clung to the edge of his robe even in unconsciousness, as though afraid he would vanish if she let go.

Chen Yue brushed a strand of silver hair from her face and let out a long sigh. She risked everything for me. For us.

"You're not going to explain?"

Velira's voice sliced through the silence like a blade.

Chen Yue didn't look up at first. He knew what was in those words—anger, confusion, maybe even betrayal. But when he finally met her eyes, it was worse than he expected.

Velira stood a few paces away, her white battle robe torn and stained from the fight. Her sapphire eyes, usually calm and composed like an icy lake, were now stormy, crackling with something raw—something close to rage.

"Explain what?" Chen Yue said quietly, though his tone carried steel.

Velira's fists clenched. "Don't play dumb with me. That power you just used… that wasn't mana. And Ayara—" her jaw tightened, her voice trembling despite her effort to hold steady, "she wasn't just helping you, was she?"

Chen Yue exhaled slowly. The night wind stirred his dark hair, carrying the faint scent of burnt wood. So it begins.

"You wouldn't understand," he said finally.

Velira stepped closer, her boots crunching against scorched earth. "Make me understand."

For a long moment, only silence hung between them. Then, Chen Yue spoke—slowly, carefully, every word chosen like a blade drawn in the dark.

"The energy you felt is called Qi. Not mana—something older, something deeper. This world… forgot it. Buried it under centuries of obsession with mana. But Qi isn't gone. It's still here, waiting."

Velira's brow furrowed. "Qi…? That… doesn't exist. It's a myth from ancient manuscripts."

Chen Yue gave a bitter smile. "And yet you saw it tonight."

Velira hesitated, then clenched her teeth. "And Ayara? What did you do to her?"

That question cut deeper than any blade. Chen Yue looked down at Ayara, sleeping peacefully, her breathing soft, unaware of the storm brewing. He brushed his thumb over her knuckles, then met Velira's gaze again.

"We formed a bond," he said simply.

Velira froze. "…A bond?"

"A connection that allows two souls to resonate," Chen Yue explained, his tone measured. "It makes us stronger. Strong enough to survive what's coming."

Her eyes narrowed. "And you didn't think I deserved to know? After everything? After following you into this nightmare?"

Chen Yue felt the weight of her words, but he didn't flinch. "Velira, this wasn't about trust. It was about timing. About survival. The Voidspawn wasn't something we could beat without that power."

"So you chose her."

Those three words struck like arrows.

Velira's voice cracked—just barely, but Chen Yue heard it. She took another step forward, her aura flaring faintly, the icy blue glow of her mana lighting the darkness.

"Tell me, Chen Yue," she whispered, her voice trembling between fury and pain. "If it had been me standing there instead of her… would you have chosen me?"

The question hung like a blade at his throat.

He could have lied. He could have told her what she wanted to hear. But Chen Yue wasn't a liar—not to her.

"…I don't know," he said at last.

Velira's lips parted slightly, her breath hitching. For a heartbeat, her aura flickered wildly, like a storm breaking free. Then, just as suddenly, she turned away, her cloak swirling behind her.

"Damn you, Chen Yue."

And then the sound came—the distant rumble of hooves.

Chen Yue's head snapped up. His spiritual sense, still dulled from exhaustion, stretched out as far as it could. What he felt made his stomach sink.

"They're coming," he muttered.

Velira stiffened. "Who?"

Before he could answer, the forest exploded with torchlight. Figures emerged from the smoke—rows of armored knights, their silver breastplates gleaming, their spears tipped with crimson crystal. At their head rode a man clad in obsidian-black armor, his crimson cloak trailing like spilled blood. His face was sharp, cruelly handsome, his hair a cascade of dark gold tied in a warrior's knot.

Lord Ardyn Velcaris, Supreme Commander of the Crown's Seventh Legion.

Chen Yue's eyes narrowed. Of course it's him.

The man's voice rolled out like thunder, smooth yet venomous:

"So this is where the rats were hiding."

His gaze swept over the scorched battlefield, the crater, the shattered trees—then locked on Chen Yue. And in that gaze was something more than curiosity. Recognition.

"Interesting," Ardyn murmured, dismounting his horse with predatory grace. "I felt the surge from miles away. Power like that… I haven't seen in centuries. Tell me, stranger—what are you?"

Chen Yue rose slowly, laying Ayara gently against the boulder. Pain lanced through his body with every step, but he didn't show it. His blade gleamed faintly in the moonlight, still humming with residual Qi.

"Just someone who doesn't like being hunted," he said coolly.

Ardyn's smile widened, though his eyes were cold as frost. "Oh, you misunderstand. I'm not here to kill you." He spread his arms, mock generosity dripping from every gesture. "The Crown has… uses for men like you. Kneel, swear loyalty to the Empire, and I might let your little companions live."

Velira's aura flared, her mana condensing into a shimmering froststorm. "You dare—"

"Velira, stop." Chen Yue's voice was calm, but there was an edge that cut through the tension.

She froze, glaring at him in disbelief.

Chen Yue turned back to Ardyn, his eyes hard as steel. "And if I refuse?"

Ardyn's smile vanished.

The air turned heavy, the night trembling with killing intent as dozens of knights leveled their spears, crimson tips blazing with runes.

"Then," Ardyn said softly, his voice like the whisper of a blade before the strike, "I'll burn this forest—and everyone in it—down to ash."

Chen Yue exhaled slowly, his fingers tightening on his blade. His meridians screamed in agony, his body barely holding together. The System flickered in his mind, desperate, calculating, offering options he didn't want to take.

[System Warning]

Host Energy Levels: Critical. Combat Capability: 32%.

Option Available: Initiate Forbidden Protocol – Stellar Gate Escape.

Cost: All Qi Reserves + Temporary Loss of System Features. Proceed?

Chen Yue's eyes narrowed. So it's run… or die here.

But before he could decide, Ayara stirred, her weak voice cutting through the tension like a fragile thread of light.

"Chen… Yue…"

Her fingers brushed his hand, her silver eyes fluttering open, still soft with exhaustion—but burning with something fierce.

"Don't… let him… take us."

He looked down at her, then back at Ardyn—and in that instant, his decision crystallized.

His lips curled into the faintest smile.

"You want me, Ardyn?" Chen Yue said, his voice cold and sharp. "Then catch me."

The System screamed its confirmation as the world erupted in light.
