Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Woman of starlight

Chapter 16 – The Woman of Starlight

The cavern hummed with silent power. Each glowing crystal vein seemed alive, pulsing faintly like a heartbeat. Selene moved through it as if it were her domain, her steps soundless, her amethyst eyes reflecting the endless void.

Chen Yue followed, his body aching with every movement, his Qi reserves empty, his System still offline. Ayara clung lightly to his arm, her breathing shallow, while Velira walked on his other side, her aura sharp, cold, and simmering with unspoken tension.

For several minutes, no one spoke. Only the echo of dripping water and the soft hum of ancient glyphs filled the air. Finally, Velira broke the silence.

"Explain." Her voice was icy enough to freeze the luminescent mist around them. "Who are you? How do you know about him?"

Selene didn't turn. Her voice floated back like music over still water.

"I told you. My name is Selene. And I know because I have waited for him… for a very long time."

Velira's fists clenched. "Waited? For him? What are you planning?"

Selene stopped abruptly. When she turned, her silken hair shifted like liquid night, glimmering under the cavern's glow. Her gaze slid over Velira briefly before locking onto Chen Yue—piercing, deep, almost intimate.

"You carry the first Fragment," she said softly. "The seed of the Nameless Path."

Chen Yue narrowed his eyes.

"Fragments… prophecy… the System mentioned something after the battle. What does it mean?"

Selene's lips curved faintly, though her eyes remained unreadable.

"The Nameless Path is not just cultivation. It is ascension beyond the boundaries of heaven and earth—a road abandoned when your world drowned itself in mana." She raised her hand slowly, and for an instant, Qi particles coalesced around her palm like a swirling galaxy, burning brighter than any magic Chen Yue had ever seen.

Ayara's eyes widened. "You… you're a cultivator too."

Selene's gaze flicked to her briefly, a flicker of amusement in her eyes.

"Cultivator?" She gave a soft laugh, a sound that made the cavern tremble.

"Little one, that word is far too small for what I am."

Velira's aura flared, frost spreading over the stones beneath her boots. "Enough riddles. If you think you can take him—"

"Take him?" Selene tilted her head slightly, her smile sharpening like a blade.

"Oh, child. I don't want to take him. I want to awaken him."

Velira froze. Ayara stiffened, clutching Chen Yue's arm tighter. He could feel her trembling faintly.

Selene's eyes softened as she looked at him again, and for the briefest moment, the weight of her presence shifted—not crushing, but… warm.

"Seven Bonds shall awaken the Nameless Path," she murmured, almost to herself.

"And you… have formed the first." Her gaze drifted to Ayara, who flushed scarlet under that knowing look.

Chen Yue's chest tightened.

"You know the prophecy."

Selene nodded slowly. "Of course. It was written in the stars long before you drew your first breath." She stepped closer, her scent a strange mix of moonlight and something older, eternal.

"But prophecy is never without chains, Chen Yue. And the longer you walk this road, the more the heavens will try to break you."

Before he could speak, the ground shook.

A deep, rumbling roar rolled through the cavern, low and primal, vibrating through stone and bone alike. Ayara flinched, her grip tightening on his arm. Velira instantly drew her blade, frost wreathing the steel in pale light.

Chen Yue felt it too—a presence vast and wild, older than kingdoms, radiating killing intent thick enough to choke on.

Selene's expression didn't change, but her eyes gleamed faintly.

"It seems the guardian has awoken."

"Guardian?" Chen Yue asked, already reaching for his sword despite his exhausted body.

"What kind of—"

The roar came again, closer now, and then the shadows moved.

From the far end of the cavern, where the glowing crystal veins converged into a massive archway inscribed with ancient glyphs, something emerged—something colossal.

A beast stepped into the light, its body shimmering with crystal scales that refracted the cavern's glow like shards of stars. Its head was draconic, crowned with jagged horns that pulsed with blue energy, and its eyes burned like twin suns. Each step made the ground quake; each breath filled the air with raw, crushing Qi.

Ayara's voice broke in a whisper.

"…That's not possible."

Velira's knuckles whitened on her blade. "A… Primordial Qi Beast."

Chen Yue's jaw tightened. Perfect. Just what we needed when I have no Qi left and the System is down.

Selene, however, looked almost amused.

"Magnificent, isn't it? The Star-Eater Drake. It has slept for ten thousand years, waiting for the one who bears the Fragment."

Chen Yue's stomach sank.

"Don't tell me…"

"Yes." Selene's smile was serene, her voice like moonlight on still water.

"It's waiting for you."

The beast roared, the sound shaking loose shards of crystal from the ceiling. Then it lunged.

"MOVE!" Chen Yue shouted, grabbing Ayara and pushing her aside as a massive claw slammed into the ground where they had stood. The impact shattered stone, sending jagged chunks flying like cannonballs. Velira leapt back, ice walls blooming in front of her to deflect the debris.

"We can't fight this thing!" Ayara cried, panic lacing her voice.

"Not without your Qi—"

"I know!" Chen Yue snarled, rolling behind a boulder as the beast's tail whipped across the cavern, obliterating a stone pillar in an explosion of shards.

Velira landed beside him, her breath sharp, eyes blazing with frostfire. "Then what's the plan?"

Chen Yue gritted his teeth. His mind raced. System's down. No techniques. No boosts. Qi empty. Which means…

His gaze flicked to Selene.

She stood perfectly still, unbothered by the chaos, her amethyst eyes glowing faintly as she watched him—like a teacher waiting for her student to act.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you?" he growled.

Selene's lips curved in that faint, infuriating smile.

"Prove you're worthy of the Nameless Path… and I'll intervene."

Chen Yue cursed under his breath. Of course it wouldn't be easy.

The beast lunged again, jaws wide, a furnace of blue flame roaring in its throat. Chen Yue dove aside, rolling across the ground as searing heat scorched the air where he'd been a heartbeat before. Ayara fired a volley of arrows, each glowing with mana, but they shattered harmlessly against its crystalline hide. Velira charged, her blade wreathed in frost, and slashed at its foreleg—but the strike barely left a mark before the beast backhanded her across the cavern. She slammed into a wall with a cry of pain.

"Velira!" Chen Yue shouted, but she was already struggling to her feet, blood at her lip, eyes burning with fury.

Ayara scrambled to his side, her voice frantic. "We can't win—Chen Yue, what do we do?!"

He clenched his fists, his chest heaving. His body screamed in protest, but deep in his core, something stirred. Faint. Fragile. A thread of Qi—tiny, almost nonexistent, but there.

And with it, a whisper.

[Emergency Protocol: Nameless Core Awakening Detected]

Chen Yue's eyes burned. No choice.

"YES."

Power surged through him like wildfire, tearing and mending his veins all at once. His blade flared with astral brilliance, brighter than the cavern's glow. Ayara gasped as the pressure rolled off him in waves, and even Selene's smile deepened, her eyes glimmering with approval.

"Chen Yue…" Velira whispered, awe mixing with something else in her voice.

He stood slowly, his aura blazing like a newborn star, his voice cold and sharp as a blade drawn under moonlight.

"Sixty seconds." His eyes locked on the beast.

"That's all I need."
