Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Bonda and Blades

Chapter 19 – Bonds and Blades

The words "You are the Fragment" still echoed in Chen Yue's skull long after Selene spoke them.

He lay there in silence, feeling Ayara's hand trembling in his, feeling Velira's aura pulsing like a winter storm ready to break. Selene stood poised in the center of the chamber, her midnight hair cascading like a waterfall of starlight, her amethyst eyes never leaving him.

Seven Bonds.

Chains of heaven.

The Nameless Path.

Everything was shifting—and he wasn't sure if he was standing at the beginning of something glorious or the edge of a bottomless abyss.

"Explain," Velira said suddenly, her tone sharp enough to split stone.

"What do you mean by 'Bonds'? Why is he the Fragment? What game are you playing?"

Selene's lips curved faintly as she turned her gaze to Velira, like a queen regarding a loud servant who'd dared to speak out of turn.

"The Nameless Path requires seven anchors to exist," she said softly.

"Seven threads bound by fate, woven through desire, loyalty, and blood. Without them, the Path collapses."

Ayara frowned, her voice tight.

"Are you saying… these 'bonds' are… with us?"

Selene's gaze flicked briefly toward Ayara, her smile deepening by an almost imperceptible degree.

"Some are already forming."

Ayara flushed scarlet. Velira stiffened, her aura spiking like ice shards.

Chen Yue exhaled slowly, trying to push past the pounding in his head.

"So you're telling me… to survive, I need seven women bound to me by… what? Love? Loyalty? Blood oaths?"

Selene tilted her head slightly.

"Why limit yourself to one answer? The heavens will not ask how—it will only ask if."

Velira's voice cracked like a whip.

"You think you can just… turn him into some pawn in your little prophecy?!" Her hand flew to her sword hilt, frost curling along the blade as she drew it halfway from the sheath.

"Say one more word, and I'll—"

"And you'll what?" Selene's voice was soft, almost amused, but it carried the weight of galaxies behind it. She took a single step forward—and the temperature shifted. Not heat. Not cold. Something heavier. A pressure that crushed the air like the deep ocean pressing down on fragile shells.

Velira froze. Her blade trembled in her grip as sweat formed along her brow despite the frost still curling from her aura.

Selene leaned forward slightly, her gaze a violet abyss.

"You are strong, little wolf," she murmured. "But if you bare your fangs at me again, I will break them."

The words weren't loud. They didn't need to be. Every syllable dripped with absolute certainty.

For a heartbeat, Velira's fury warred with reason—then her jaw tightened, and she slammed her sword back into its sheath hard enough to crack the scabbard.

Ayara let out a shaky breath she didn't realize she'd been holding.

Chen Yue clenched his teeth. He hated this tension—hated the way it pulled at all of them like threads in a snare.

"Enough," he rasped, his voice rough but sharp. "All of you—stop."

The room stilled.

Chen Yue forced himself upright despite the pain tearing through his veins. Selene didn't stop him this time; her eyes only glimmered faintly with interest as if watching a cub bare its claws.

He met Velira's gaze first.

"I get it. You don't trust her. I don't fully trust her either. But right now, I'm alive because of her."

Velira's fists clenched, her eyes burning like shards of ice, but she said nothing.

Then he turned to Ayara. Her emerald eyes were wide, full of fear and something deeper—something softer, but edged with hurt.

"And you…" He sighed, his tone gentler. "You've followed me this far. If you want out, now's the time. This road isn't safe. It's never going to be."

Ayara's fingers tightened around his hand, her lips trembling—but then her chin lifted, her eyes fierce through the shimmer of unshed tears.

"Don't you dare ask me that again."

Something in Chen Yue's chest loosened, and he gave a faint, tired smile.

"Fair enough."

Selene watched all of this with the serene calm of someone playing a game whose ending she already knew.

But the fragile quiet shattered with a sound like thunder.

The chamber door slammed open again—this time not by Velira, but by a soldier clad in black-and-crimson armor, his insignia blazing like fire against shadow. Behind him marched a dozen more, their boots striking the stone in perfect unison, their weapons gleaming with runes.

At their head strode a man draped in obsidian robes etched with scarlet glyphs, his hair long and raven-black, his eyes a molten gold that glimmered like a predator's in the dark. His aura hit like a tidal wave—a mix of mana so dense it warped the air and something else… something darker.

Ayara stiffened instantly, her bow half-raised. Velira's hand flew back to her blade.

Chen Yue's instincts screamed like sirens.

The man's golden gaze swept the chamber slowly, ignoring everyone else until it landed on Chen Yue.

And then he smiled.

"So," the stranger drawled, his voice smooth as silk wrapped around steel.

"You're the one who killed my kingdom's Star-Eater."

The words dropped like boulders into a still lake.

Chen Yue's pulse spiked. Ebonflare Kingdom. He'd heard the name whispered on hushed lips during their journey—a land where mana flowed like blood, where the Magus Lords ruled with fire and shadow. If this man led their envoys… this wasn't a messenger.

This was an executioner.

"Who the hell are you?" Velira's voice was low, taut with lethal tension.

The man's molten gaze flicked to her lazily.

"Your name is beneath my concern, frostling." His eyes slid back to Chen Yue, gleaming like a predator savoring the moment before the kill.

"I am Lord Kaelen Duskspire, Hand of the Ebonflare Throne. And you…" His smile sharpened, revealing teeth too perfect to be human.

"…owe my king something very precious."

Selene spoke before Chen Yue could open his mouth, her voice slicing through the charged air like a whisper of midnight steel.

"The beast's core."

Kaelen's eyes gleamed with cold amusement.

"Ah. So you do know. Good. That saves us time." His steps echoed like war drums as he advanced, each one radiating more pressure, more heat, until the very stones beneath his boots cracked.

"Give me the core, boy. Or I take your head instead."

Ayara's bowstring creaked as she drew it back. Velira's blade hissed free in a storm of frost.

Selene only smiled faintly, her amethyst eyes never leaving Kaelen's molten gaze.

Chen Yue's pulse thundered in his ears as the System's cold voice rang inside his skull:

[Warning: Divergence Event Detected.]

[Two paths available: Submit or Resist.]

[Choice will determine Fate Trajectory.]

Chen Yue's fingers curled slowly into fists.

Submit… or fight a Magus Lord when I can barely stand?

Dammit… I hate both options.
