Chapter 9 - Aweakining of the forgotten

Chapter 9 – The Shadow's Trail

The first light of dawn filtered through the dense canopy of the Whispering Forest, casting long shadows across the forest floor. Leon Jian and Mei Lin moved silently, the jade's golden glow dimmed but still pulsing faintly, as if guiding them.

"The figure from last night," Mei Lin whispered, "he wasn't just a scout. He was testing you… measuring your strength and resolve. Whoever he works for knows more than we imagined."

Leon's eyes scanned the undergrowth. "Then we follow him. If they're sending people to watch me, I want to know who's pulling the strings."

For hours, they tracked the faint disturbances left in the forest—the broken branches, footprints in the mud, and the occasional flicker of black fabric disappearing among the trees. The jade's warmth intensified whenever they neared these traces, confirming they were on the right path.

By midday, the trail led them to a hidden glade, where the air shimmered unnaturally, and the trees formed a near-perfect circle. Leon felt the jade vibrate violently, warning him of imminent danger.

From the shadows stepped three figures, their faces obscured by masks, and robes as dark as the night. They moved with lethal precision, each carrying weapons that seemed to hum with energy.

"Leon Jian," the tallest said, his voice low and deliberate. "You tread paths you cannot yet control. The Celestial Jade is not yours to command freely."

Leon's jaw tightened, golden energy spilling from the pendant in a protective aura. "I've already survived your tricks once. Step aside, or face the consequences."

The three warriors exchanged a glance and then attacked simultaneously. Their movements were fast, coordinated, and deadly. Leon and Mei Lin moved as one, dodging, striking, and using the jade's power to protect themselves.

Despite their skill, the assailants were relentless. One of them managed to land a glancing blow on Leon's shoulder, sending him staggering back. Mei Lin countered, slashing with her sword, but another enemy lunged, forcing her to parry rather than strike.

"Leon!" Mei Lin shouted. "They're trying to divide us!"

Leon gritted his teeth. "Then we'll turn that against them."

Drawing on the jade's energy, Leon focused. A wave of golden light erupted from the pendant, creating a shimmering barrier that pushed the enemies back. Using the momentary opening, he and Mei Lin struck in perfect synchronization—gold energy from Leon's fists, steel from Mei Lin's sword—forcing the attackers to retreat temporarily.

But as they did, a chilling laugh echoed through the glade. From above, perched on a twisted branch, a figure cloaked in black watched with a smile that made Leon's blood run cold.

"You're learning quickly," the figure said, voice like silk over steel. "But this is only the beginning. The sect is preparing… and so am I."

Before Leon could react, the figure vanished into the treetops, leaving behind a faint trace of dark energy that set the hair on his arms standing.

Breathing heavily, Leon turned to Mei Lin. "They know we're coming. And whoever that is… they're powerful. We need to be smarter, faster, stronger."

Mei Lin nodded, eyes steely. "Then we keep moving. We follow the trail, uncover their plans, and be ready for whatever they throw at us. Vengeance won't wait for the weak."

Leon's fingers tightened around the jade. The path of revenge was growing darker, the enemies more dangerous, and the stakes higher. But with Mei Lin by his side, and the Celestial Jade empowering him, he would face every shadow, every betrayal, and rise stronger than ever.

The forest around them was silent once more, yet Leon knew this calm was only temporary. Ahead lay secrets, ambushes, and the first real confrontation with those who had once sought to see him broken.

And Leon Jian would not falter.
