Chapter 102 - Chapter 102:[The Festival OF Masks ARC ]The Night Match

Chapter 102 (Part 13)

The festival grounds transformed after dark.

The bright banners of the day gave way to strings of glowing lanterns, their warm light casting long shadows across the empty tracks and silent stalls. The crowd had thinned, but the energy hadn't faded. It had simply shifted from the chaos of competition to the anticipation of something else.

Alok walked through the crowd with his hands in his pockets. The pendant pressed against his chest, silent now, as if Extera's voice had never been there at all. But Alok knew it had. He hadn't told anyone.

Not Rihan. Not Ravel. Not even Tira, who now walked a few steps behind him, her eyes fixed on the ground, her shoulders still hunched like she was bracing for a blow.

She had barely spoken since they returned. She ate when food was offered. She slept when exhaustion took her. She followed without question. But she hadn't spoken. Alok didn't push her. Some things took time.

Ravel walked beside Alok, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. The night air was cool, carrying the familiar scent of fried food and sweat and the distant echo of cheers from the main arena.

Rihan walked ahead, already scanning the crowd with the instinct of someone who had never stopped being a soldier.

"Match starts in twenty minutes," Rihan called back. "Two schools. Valdris and Drakemoor. Combat division."

"Valdris?" Sera asked, catching up. "Isn't that....."

"Your school," Rihan confirmed. "They made it to the quarterfinals."

Alok glanced at her. "You're not cheering?"

Sera shook her head. "I'm not in the mood."

She didn't elaborate. No one asked.

The arena was packed.

The stands were filled with students, parents, and spectators from across Lemuria. Flags of gold and green Valdris fluttered on one side. Black and bronze Drakemoor on the other.

Alok found a spot near the railing, close enough to see the fighters clearly.

The Valdris fighter was tall, lean, with sharp eyes and a stance that spoke of years of training. She moved like water, fluid and precise. Her green and gold uniform was immaculate, her dark hair pulled back in a tight ponytail. She looked calm, almost bored, as if she had done this a hundred times before.

The Drakemoor fighter was heavier, broader, his arms thick with muscle. He cracked his neck and grinned at the crowd, playing to the cheers. His black and bronze uniform strained against his shoulders, and his fists were wrapped in worn tape.

Alok watched them both. He saw the opening. He saw the weakness.

The girl is faster. The boy is stronger. But the girl has already seen his patterns.

He kept his observations to himself.

The match began.

The Drakemoor fighter charged first, his fist swinging in a wide arc. The Valdris girl sidestepped, her movements almost lazy, and struck his exposed side with two quick jabs. The crowd roared.

Ravel leaned closer to Alok. "She's good."

Alok didn't answer. He was watching something else something no one else had noticed.

The Valdris girl's eyes. They weren't focused on her opponent. They kept flicking to the stands. Searching. Scanning.

She's looking for someone, Alok thought. Or she's expecting something.

He followed her gaze. The stands were packed with faces, but one figure stood out a tall man in a dark coat, his face half hidden in shadow. He wasn't watching the fight. He was watching her.

Who is that?

The match continued. The Drakemoor fighter landed a heavy blow, and the girl stumbled back. The crowd gasped.

But Alok noticed something else the man in the dark coat had moved. He was gone. And the girl had stopped looking for him. She turned back to her opponent, her focus sharp, her movements faster.

She knows him, Alok thought. And whatever he was there for, it's done now.

He made a mental note.

The match intensified.

The Drakemoor fighter was growing frustrated. His swings were wilder, less controlled. The Valdris girl dodged and weaved, her feet light, her breathing steady. She was conserving energy while he burned through his.

Alok watched the pattern unfold. The boy was strong, but he was predictable. Every swing, every step, every feint he had seen them all before, in a dozen different fighters. The girl, on the other hand, was adapting. She wasn't just reacting to him. She was reading him, anticipating his moves before he made them.

She's been trained, Alok thought. Not just to fight. To survive.

He glanced at the empty spot where the man in the dark coat had stood.

Who trained her? And why is he watching from the shadows?

The match ended with the Valdris girl's hand raised in victory. The crowd erupted.

Alok didn't clap. He was still staring at the empty spot where the man in the dark coat had stood.

Sera let out a breath beside him. "She did it."

"She did," Alok agreed. "But that's not what I'm thinking about."

Sera looked at him, confused. "What do you mean?"

Alok turned to her. "You know that girl?"

Sera frowned. "Not personally. She's from the same school, but she's older. More experienced. She keeps to herself."

"Is that normal?"

Sera shrugged. "She's always been quiet. Focused. Some people said she had connections, but no one ever knew who."

"Connections to who?"

"I don't know. She never talked about it."

Alok's jaw tightened. Connections. That's exactly what I thought.

Rihan fell into step beside him as they made their way out of the arena. "What did you see?"

"A man. In the stands. Watching her."

Rihan's expression shifted. "Vaelia's people?"

"Maybe. Or someone else." He paused. "She was looking for him. And when she found him, she changed."

"Changed how?"

"Her focus sharpened. Her movements became faster. She knew he was watching, and she wanted to show him something."

Rihan was silent for a moment. "Who is he?"

"I don't know. But I intend to find out."

The group gathered at the edge of the arena.

Ravel was restless, his eyes scanning the crowd. Sera was quiet, her thoughts clearly on her brother. Tira stood apart from the group, her hands clasped in front of her.

Ravel looked at Alok. "What now?"

Alok stared at the ground for a long moment, then lifted his gaze.

"We go back to the lighthouse," he said. "Not tonight. But soon. And we find out who he is."

Ravel nodded slowly. "Is it the same guy from before? The one in the alley?"

"Yes."

Ravel's expression shifted. He didn't ask for more details.

He just said, "Let me know when you want to move."

Alok met his gaze. For a moment, something passed between them a quiet acknowledgment.

They weren't allies yet. Not fully. But they were getting closer.

POV SHIFT – Tira

Tira walked at the back of the group, her head down, her hands clasped in front of her.

She heard the voices around her Rihan's low warnings, Sera's quiet breathing, Ravel's shuffling footsteps but they felt distant, like echoes from another world.

Her mind was still at the lighthouse. Still replaying the moment she had chosen to walk away from Vaelia.

"You don't understand what she saved me from."

She had said that to Alok. She had meant it.

But she wasn't sure if she was saving herself anymore or just finding another cage to live in.

She looked up at Alok's back. He walked with his hands in his pockets, his shoulders straight, his steps steady.

He doesn't treat me like a prisoner. He doesn't treat me like a weapon. He treats me like a person.

She didn't know what to do with that.
