"The Life Foundation is more cunning than we thought."
Eddie explained the situation to Anton, sounding helpless. "They've set up strong defenses, both externally and internally. We can't find any weaknesses."
"You haven't made any progress in over a month?"
Anton was surprised.
In the movie, the Life Foundation didn't seem this difficult to deal with.
Clearly, you couldn't rely on the movie's plot to understand the current reality.
"Well, not exactly."
Eddie said, "We got some solid information from some researchers. Lately, the Life Foundation seems to be preparing some kind of mysterious experiment. The experiment requires a lot of human subjects, and they plan to increase investment. But we can't get inside the Homeless Shelter, and we can't find any concrete evidence that the Life Foundation is violating human ethics. We're completely stuck, unless..."
Anton narrowed his eyes, adding, "Unless, we disguise ourselves as homeless people and infiltrate the Homeless Shelter, to find a new breakthrough."
"Yes."
Eddie on the other end of the phone hesitated.
Pretending to be a homeless person was extremely risky.
Especially, to let his subordinates take the risk of infiltrating, while he remained in New York doing nothing...
With the Life Foundation's position and power in San Francisco, once they exposed their identities as journalists, it would be practically the end of the line for them.
The most likely scenario was becoming a human experiment subject for the Life Foundation, and dying an unnatural death.
Not only would it not help him, it would instead benefit the enemy.
This made Eddie extremely anxious, hesitant to make a decision.
Gradually, a thought surfaced.
"Mysterious experiments?"
Anton could ascertain that the Life Foundation had begun research on the Symbiotes.
With Carlton Drake's obsession with the Symbiotes, if he achieved any preliminary results, he would likely rapidly devolve into a supervillain.
However, this didn't involve Anton too deeply.
Drake was in San Francisco, while he was currently filming in Los Angeles, and his life revolved around New York.
In this unique world, cities were as isolated from each other as countries, each with their own gangs and territories.
The Life Foundation still lacked the means to cross territories and cause trouble.
Of course, things would be different if both sides completely tore off the mask.
Anton thought for a moment and asked, "Bribery isn't working on the Life Foundation employees?"
"The employees all claim to know nothing, and as for the higher-ups, Drake has dirt on them. That scumbag even uses the families of those senior researchers as leverage," Eddie confessed. "We're at a dead end."
He paused, then spoke seriously, "Anton, I have to go to San Francisco. I can't let that scumbag Carlton Drake get away with this."
"If that's the case, I wish you luck."
Anton didn't refuse Eddie's request.
The investigation had reached a standstill, and Eddie was willing to risk returning to San Francisco. Anton chose to respect his decision.
Eddie's reluctance was entirely within his expectations.
As for giving up, Anton also felt it was inappropriate.
He had already promised Jameson that he would push forward with this matter. If he gave up at the first sign of difficulty, it would not only betray Eddie's trust but also disappoint Jameson's expectations of him.
Thinking about it carefully, Eddie was the protagonist of this storyline.
In other words, he was the son of destiny.
He probably wouldn't die so easily.
Putting that thought aside, Anton couldn't help but remind him, saying, "Before you go to San Francisco, remember to arrange your work, especially my novel."
"Don't worry, I'll take care of it."
Eddie's expression was grateful, and he still gave an affirmative answer.
It was the Daily Bugle that gave him a job when he was at his lowest and most helpless.
At the same time, facing a "superior" who trusted him so much, Eddie was determined to handle this job in the most perfect way.
Anton didn't think so much.
The non-stop movie shooting consumed a lot of his energy, and he quickly fell into a deep sleep after putting down the phone.
Another half month passed in the blink of an eye.
The movie shooting was unexpectedly fast, and the post-production of the special effects also began to advance rapidly under Anton's supervision, and everything was completely on the right track.
The crew members gradually changed their opinion of Anton.
They watched the roughly thirty minutes of footage Anton had edited together.
It was astonishing.
The story flowed unexpectedly well.
To finish the film as quickly as possible, Anton had scrapped some location shoots, opting instead for clever techniques or special effects.
The location shoots were almost entirely handled by the assistant director, which further sped up the process.
In just under fifty days, they'd completed two-thirds of the planned filming.
This only irritated Jim, who occasionally visited the set, making him even more convinced that he'd made a misstep and fallen into a huge pit.
Anton still couldn't be bothered to pay attention to him.
That day, after the filming wrapped up, he returned to his room, feeling quite worried.
Eddie was out of contact!
It had been over half a month since Eddie arrived in San Francisco.
Every two days, Eddie would call him, both to let him know he was safe and to report on the situation.
But a week ago, after Eddie infiltrated the Homeless Shelter, there had been no news.
Had something happened?
Anton was agitated.
Although Eddie's well-being didn't seem to affect him, Eddie's return to San Francisco was, after all, inextricably linked to him.
Firstly, he had agreed to Eddie's risky request.
Secondly, he admired Eddie.
A person who is righteous and upholds their principles is easily favored by others.
After a moment of thought, he took out his phone and dialed a strange number.
Before Eddie entered the Homeless Shelter, the last time they spoke, Eddie had given him a phone number.
He said it belonged to a young reporter he had sent to San Francisco.
Phil Yurick.
The young man also worked for the Daily Bugle.
"Hello?"
A young voice came from the other end of the phone.
"Phil Yurick?"
Anton said, "I'm Anton, from the Daily Bugle."
"Ah."
Phil sounded very nervous; of course, he'd heard of Anton.
Although only the deputy editor, his actual status was equivalent to the newspaper's owner. One word from him could get Phil fired and make it impossible for him to survive in New York. He was a "big shot."
Phil quickly said, "Boss, hello boss, this is Phil Yurick."
"How are things lately?"
Anton got straight to the point, asking, "Eddie hasn't contacted me in a while. Has something happened to him?"
"No, I don't know."
Phil stammered, "There seems to be an information blocker inside the Homeless Shelter. We've completely lost contact with Editor Eddie, and we don't know how he's doing in there. However, we bribed the Homeless Shelter's security guard, and he told us that no one from the Life Foundation has been to the Homeless Shelter recently… We guess that Editor Eddie should be safe for now."
His voice trailed off at the end, lacking confidence.
"So, he might not be safe once the Life Foundation people arrive at the Homeless Shelter, right?"
Anton's expression was grim as he questioned him, word by word.
"Uh…"
Phil stammered, not daring to answer.
