Chapter 8 - Tricky

Having reviewed the information sent back by his reporter, Eddie frowned, his expression grim.

The investigation was proving to be trickier than he'd anticipated.

The Life Foundation had initially only recruited homeless people from the streets of San Francisco, tricking them into signing agreements they couldn't understand to advance their human experimentation with drugs.

Now, Eddie learned from the information his own people had gathered that the Life Foundation had actually joined forces with the government to form a San Francisco Homeless Association.

The association was fully funded by the Life Foundation, with Carlton Drake as its honorary president.

In the most remote corner of San Francisco, a place no one wanted to go, they had erected a huge "cage" for the homeless.

It was a homeless shelter called the "Homeless Shelter."

Under the Life Foundation's leadership, the Homeless Shelter strictly controlled the entry, exit, and activities of the homeless.

The homeless people, driven here by the San Francisco city government, were restricted in their movements, essentially "imprisoned."

The Daily Bugle reporters sent to investigate in San Francisco found it difficult to sneak past the Homeless Shelter's supervision, let alone gather further intelligence.

After several days, the useful information obtained was minimal.

Even if this scarce information were released, it wouldn't shake the Life Foundation's foundation.

Attacks that didn't hit the mark were harmless.

Without direct evidence, and unable to deal a serious blow to the Life Foundation, even if The Daily Bugle exposed their actions, it wouldn't help. It would instead damage The Daily Bugle's years of accumulated credibility.

"Carlton Drake..."

Eddie gritted his teeth, "What a cunning opponent."

The Homeless Shelter in San Francisco had only been implemented for a short time, yet ninety percent of San Francisco's homeless population had already been forcibly removed by the San Francisco city government and relocated to the shelter.

The remaining ten percent either left San Francisco or remained vigilant, trying to avoid the patrolling police officers.

Now, one could hardly see any homeless people on the streets of San Francisco.

The city's environment had been cleaned up to an unprecedented degree.

The San Francisco city government and the Life Foundation received public praise for this.

High-ranking officials in the city government took this opportunity to receive a large amount of political donations from the Life Foundation.

The Life Foundation also gained access to a large number of resources for human experiments.

Since the Homeless Shelter was under the jurisdiction of the Life Foundation, no one bothered to interfere.

A perfect play, killing two birds with one stone.

"Editor, the investigation has hit a wall. We can't get anywhere."

A young voice came from the other end of the phone Eddie had just answered.

He said with frustration, "The people from the Life Foundation patrol every hour, and the streets around the Homeless Shelter are covered in cameras. Even if we were willing to risk it, we couldn't get in."

After a pause, the young voice continued, "There's only one way now. We can take a miniature camera and disguise ourselves as homeless people to get inside. As long as we can film the Life Foundation signing agreements with the homeless, or even using them for human experiments, the Life Foundation won't be able to deny it."

"No, it's too dangerous!"

Eddie rejected the suggestion and pondered, "We can try a different approach. Since we can't find a weakness from the outside, let's try from the inside."

"Inside?"

A young voice suddenly realized, "Good idea, we'll get right on it."

Eddie quickly cautioned, "Wait, Phil, don't be too hasty. We don't want to alert them."

"Understood."

Phil Yurick nodded, making a solemn promise, "Editor, we won't let you down."

Meanwhile.

Anton began filming the movie.

It wasn't smooth sailing at first. The actors needed to get used to each other, the props, lighting, and extras all needed to be coordinated, giving him a headache.

Luckily, he had the foresight to hire over a dozen assistant directors who were professionals.

The film crew gradually got into the swing of things.

After seeing the talent of his assistant directors, Anton simply delegated authority and began shooting on two tracks.

He was in charge of filming the male lead's storyline, leaving two assistant directors to help him manage the crew and shots. At the same time, the side plots and supporting characters were all handed over to the remaining reliable assistant directors.

Everything was done to finish the film as quickly as possible.

Filming a movie is a very tedious and complex process.

Anton looked at the schedule.

The experienced Jim planned to complete the shooting in 120 days, with post-production special effects scheduled to finish within 90 days, while simultaneously promoting the film. Editing would take another 15 days before the final release.

The entire cycle was around 200 days.

For a special effects blockbuster, this was already a very short timeframe.

Anton was not satisfied.

According to this cycle, he would have to wait at least half a year to exchange for the basic Batman template.

It was too agonizing!

Therefore, without affecting the film's quality, Anton rushed the progress as crazily as possible.

After all, the finished film was vividly in Anton's mind, and some unnecessary shots were simply not necessary to film.

What "take one", "take two", for Anton, was just wasting time.

He planned to get everything done within three months.

Jim noticed something was wrong and thought Anton was messing around. Unable to bear it any longer, he had a big argument with him.

Since Anton insisted, Jim could do nothing.

As an investor and director, the former certainly had the final say.

Therefore, Jim turned a blind eye, basically relinquishing control of the crew and letting Anton do as he pleased.

Under these circumstances, Anton completed nearly half of the progress in just one month.

At Anton's strong request, the special effects department also joined the crew early, working in sync.

The possibility of a release within three months was greatly increased.

Seeing this, almost no one else in the crew had any confidence in the film's outcome, including the assistant director and the leading actors.

In their eyes, Anton was completely an unprofessional rich kid.

The awkwardness of the initial filming was still fresh in his memory.

Now, he looked anything but a novice, yet his actions still didn't inspire confidence.

Some of the actors even regretted participating in this film.

Anton paid no mind to the whispers on set. After all, these people only dared to grumble in private; no one dared to speak their minds in front of the director, who held the most power on set.

Even Rachel, the female lead who played his closest friend, only dared to whine in the evenings.

"That's a wrap for today. We'll meet again at seven tomorrow," Anton announced.

Afterward, he declined the female lead's request to "discuss the script" and, supporting his old, sore back from "sitting for too long," returned to his room.

He had a missed call on his phone, from the screenwriter Browning.

He called back.

"Anton, the novelization of Batman Begins is finished," Browning said. "The manuscript has been sent to your email, please check it. If you need any revisions, contact me anytime."

"Okay, thanks for your hard work."

Anton hung up and opened his email. He quickly scanned through the not-too-long original text and was very satisfied after reading it.

Browning was truly a top screenwriter, a master of words.

Then, he called Eddie.

Eddie answered immediately.

"Anton, what's up?"

Eddie's weary voice came through the phone.

"I sent a novel to your email. Remember, get it published in The Daily Bugle as quickly as possible, serialized over a 60-day cycle."

Anton spoke with a commanding tone, "This is crucial for my movie promotion. Make sure it's done perfectly."

"Don't worry."

Eddie assured him, "It's not a problem."

"Good."

Anton changed the subject, asking, "You sound off. Tell me, how many days have you been awake? As far as I know, the workload at The Daily Bugle shouldn't make you like this. Are you having trouble in San Francisco?"
