Chapter 3 - Becoming a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent, Moving into Dorm 409

"What happened!"

Fury from the next office was drawn in by the loud noise. He saw Natasha pulling the trigger and immediately yelled, "Are you crazy!"

He rushed towards Natasha, trying to knock the gun from her hand.

Bang!

But he was too late. The shot rang out.

The bullet hurtled towards Tao Wen's head.

"Argh—"

Tao Wen instinctively shouted, a desperate cry.

But then, he froze. He felt no pain, as if nothing had happened.

"It's the Illusory Shield! It blocked the bullets!"

Immediately, he noticed a shimmering, illusory membrane had appeared in front of him. The membrane rippled slightly, looking as though it could collapse and vanish at any moment.

Seeing this, Tao Wen couldn't help but get excited. His Golden Finger wasn't just wishful thinking; it was real.

"What?"

Fury widened his eyes, staring at the unharmed Tao Wen, the Illusory Shield in front of him, and the scattered bullet casings on the ground. He felt extremely surprised.

"Not dead?"

Natasha was also astonished. In her view, Tao Wen should have been dead. Even super soldiers like them, with their enhanced physiques, would be in danger. Yet, he was perfectly fine, which truly shocked her.

"Is this your ability?"

Fury stepped forward, wanting to touch the Illusory Shield, but his hand passed right through. This further astonished him. It wasn't like high-tech gadgetry; it was like magic. Seeing this, a different light flashed in his single eye. S.H.I.E.L.D. needed people with such extraordinary abilities.

"Congratulations. You've passed our assessment. You can join S.H.I.E.L.D."

Fury walked up and extended his hand to Tao Wen. "This was just an assessment. Natasha's bullets were plastic."

He then gave Natasha a look.

"Yes, congratulations."

Despite her obvious anger, Natasha had no choice but to respond.

"Really? Well, I'm incredibly lucky."

Tao Wen shook Fury's hand and quickly walked to his side. He wasn't a fool. He could tell that Fury had just improvised. How could that scene have been an assessment? An assessment wouldn't let Natasha just let him hug her. However, joining S.H.I.E.L.D. was indeed a good choice.

At least Natasha wouldn't be shooting her teammates anymore.

"Welcome, Tao Wen. Starting today, you're one of us."

Fury gave Tao Wen a warm hug.

Fragment +1.

"As a member of S.H.I.E.L.D., do I get my own dorm?"

Fleeing the office, Tao Wen immediately asked Fury after escaping Natasha. Everything that had happened today was a bit too complicated; he needed to get some rest.

"Of course, you do. But they're a bit scarce right now."

Fury agreed readily, but then frowned. After thinking for a moment, he pulled out a key: "There's a two-room dorm available, but one of the rooms is already occupied."

"I'll get along with him."

Tao Wen didn't wait for Fury to finish. He grabbed the key from Fury's hand, agreed readily, and left.

"I hope you two enjoy your stay. He's got quite a temper."

Fury turned and headed toward his office, muttering to himself, "What good luck. Another Mutant. But he won't last long. That's the downside. Before he dies, make good use of him. Let him be remembered far and wide after his death."

Tao Wen followed the key's marking, 409, and found the dorm.

The dorm was very luxurious, with two bedrooms, two living rooms, a kitchen, and a bathroom. The environment was excellent, with fresh potted plants, and a refreshing atmosphere everywhere. Especially the furniture in the living room was spotless.

It seems this roommate has a strong case of OCD. Guess I'll have to get along with him.

After summing it up, Tao Wen entered the room on the right.

The room wasn't large, but it was well-equipped, meeting the standards for moving right in. The bedding even smelled of sunshine, which made him feel very comfortable. He immediately lay down on the soft bed.

"It's been a crazy day."

Staring at the white ceiling, he took a deep breath.

Everything that had happened since he woke up had completely overturned his imagination. These were things that only appeared in movies, yet he had experienced them.

Logically speaking, this system of mine should be closely related to League of Legends. Then I should be able to see my attribute panel?

Tao Wen couldn't help but curiously look at the values in front of him. The value still displayed "Fragment +1". As he looked, the nine item slots reappeared, with the blue Modified Doran's Shield placed on top.

His gaze turned to the other side, where a small red dot was present.

Whoosh!

As he looked at it a few more times, a virtual attribute box popped up.

Name: Tao Wen.

Identity: S.H.I.E.L.D. Level One Agent.

Equipment: Modified Doran's Shield.

Lifespan: 2 months and one day.

"This is!"

Looking at the lifespan, Tao Wen jumped up, shouting in disbelief.

Even though his lifespan was only two months, it was a pleasant surprise for him, as he was planning to live for another month.

"No, wait, the lifespan is still increasing!"

When Tao Wen looked at the lifespan stat again, he was surprised to see it had changed again: 2 months, 1 day, and 10 minutes!

At this moment, he couldn't help but focus his attention on the Modified Doran's Shield beside him, especially on the stat that granted 6 HP regeneration every five seconds.

"In other words, as long as I keep this Doran's Shield, my lifespan will keep increasing... If I can farm shards and get Warmog's Armor, my lifespan will reach several decades in a matter of seconds. Add in the bonus attributes, and I could live for a hundred years!"

Tao Wen couldn't help but shout in surprise. He knew that the extra month of lifespan must have come from the Doran's Shield.

"Or, if I could get Infinity Edge, Bloodthirster, and Statikk Shiv, my power would be unstoppable! And if I got Guardian Angel, I wouldn't have to worry about that powerful Purple Sweet Potato Spirit!"

Thinking of this, his heart immediately became fiery with anticipation, and his gaze fell on the numerical values.

"Eh?"

When he looked at the numbers, he let out a small sound of surprise, as the values had changed again.

2/6.

"Here we go again?"

A fiery gleam ignited in Tao Wen's eyes. He felt an immediate urge to rush out and farm some shards. But after checking the time – 10:30 PM – and glancing at the flickering energy shield, he abandoned the idea.

"I'll farm my fill first thing tomorrow morning."

Muttering to himself, he was too exhausted and immediately fell asleep.

"Water, water..."

At three in the morning, he groggily woke up, parched.

He rubbed the sleep from his eyes, threw on his shorts, and headed out of his room towards the kitchen. He remembered there was a refrigerator there, and it should have bottled water.

"What's that smell?"

As soon as he pushed the door open, he smelled a unique fragrance. It was the scent of a woman's hair after a bath. In the dead of night, it immediately ignited a fire within him.
