Polaris looked down at the pale blue and green sphere from the planet's moon surface. Luna, better known as the moon was humanity's Spirit of the Tides, she gentle gaze was almost romantic in the way she looked at the humans, looking back up at her. She sat beside Polaris who hadn't taken his eyes off of Earth, eyes full of wonder and a pain that went back centuries.
"You do this everyday, Polaris. You train with Sol, get frustrated, then come here and stare longingly at Gaia." Said Luna. The name Gaia, made Polaris's snow-white eyes glare at her. "Sorry, I meant Earth..." Luna, looked away. She knew better than to use the name the deity gave to Earth, especially when Polaris was around. Polaris clenched his fist as memories of his failure to kill the deity flood back into his mind as if his thoughts were a tsunami rushing towards land. His eyes narrowed into a glare as he at her. "Knowing I failed them.. and haven't been able to return to them... it haunts me." Polaris's eyes flared and glowed a luminous white hue. Luna, looked at him, about to say something when Sol appeared and joined them.
"Lady Sol, I am humbled to be in your presence." Said Luna kneeling before her. Polaris turned and looked at his master. Her orange and golden hair looked as if she hadn't slept in days. She looked utterly exhausted, as if she'd remained awake being haunted by something. "Master, you look tired." Stated Polaris, now fully facing his master. Sol went to speak, but collasped to a knee. Luna and Polaris helped her into Luna's cottage within the Sea of Tranquility, and let her relax while Polaris syphoned some of his hydrogen for her to drink. As he handed her the mug, her eyes trembled in sorrowful welling sunspots.
"Polaris, do you remember my duty, my job as you said?" Asked Sol, her eyes softening as she looked at him. Polaris nodded, "Yes, you walk amongst the humans." Sol smiled and shook her head. "It's more complicated than that. I walk amongst the humans as I am their protector. Luna provides their oceans with tides and waves, while I walk amongst them, hunting demons and angels that appear. However, after our last training session, it has become clear to me, I can no longer walk amongst them." Polaris and Luna's eyes widened in disbelief at Sol's statement. However, Sol wasn't finished. "That is what I am passing this torch to you." Sol smiled at Polaris, who looked confused. "Pass the torch? What's a torch?" He asked, completely missing Sol's point. Luna smacked him upside the head lightly. "You dense moron! Sol is giving you the role of Humanity's Guardian."
Polaris's eyes froze on his master. "Y-you're what?!" His mind raced, but his expression wasn't upset or one of frustration. He was concerned, not about the job, but for his master's life. "Master, please tell me, how much hydrogen do you have left?" Sol looked down and sighed. "Enough to live out another eon, but not enough to transform myself to walk amongst humanity." Sol paused for a moment, "Please, my faithful student and disciple, fufill my role, walk amongst the humans you fought so hard to protect."
Sol's eyes narrowed as she spoke her next words carefully, "Go, erase the stain of failure from your soul. Become their hero once more." Polaris's eyes widened at her words, as they offered him one shot at redemption.
