Chapter 34 - In Plain Sight

Sherry lay crumpled on the couch, her knees twisted at unnatural angles, blood streaming from her broken nose. Teeth littered the cushions and floor, her swollen face pulled into a mask of hatred despite the damage. Pamela stood over her, arms folded, while Barbara's cold stare never left their victim.

Barbara's voice cut the silence, sharp and serious. "Sherry's involved in all the disappearances of those people. We shouldn't leave her alive. What if she causes more people to be killed working with some other villain later on?"

Pamela looked down at Sherry, her eyes calm but unreadable. After a beat, she nodded. "Perhaps you're right."

Sherry glared up at her, blood bubbling at her lips as she forced the words through. "You little bitch. Wait until the professor gets a hold of you. I'll personally beg him to torture you endlessly."

Pamela's face hardened. "Silence, you bitch."

Her hand whipped across Sherry's face, the backhand echoing in the small apartment. Blood and several more teeth spat out of Sherry's mouth, splattering across the floor before she sagged sideways on the couch, groaning faintly.

Barbara hesitated, glancing at Pamela. "If we kill her… how are we supposed to get rid of the body?"

Pamela slowly raised her wrist, the faint green glow of the Midnight Rose bracelet pulsing in the dim light. "I didn't tell you yet, but… when I was escaping the lab, I discovered one of the tricks from my Midnight Rose bracelet. It doesn't just absorb the vitality of seedlings…" Her tone sharpened. "It can completely consume bodies. Flesh, blood, bones, teeth—everything. It's the perfect body disposer."

Barbara's lips curled upward in approval. "That's so cool. Well, no time like the present. Get rid of her."

Pamela gave her a flat look. "You're certainly in a hurry."

Barbara shrugged. "I want to get that money and get out of here."

Pamela nodded once. "Okay."

She extended her wrist. The bracelet unfurled with a low hiss, a vine sliding out, glowing faintly with bioluminescent light. It whipped forward, wrapping around Sherry's torso and arms before she could even move. Sherry let out a final, broken scream as the vine tightened, pulling her in. The sound of bones snapping and flesh compressing filled the room. Within seconds, her entire body was dragged inward and absorbed, vanishing completely into the glowing tendril.

The vine withdrew, coiling back into the bracelet. Even the bloodstains and scattered teeth on the floor were gone, erased as if Sherry had never existed. The apartment fell silent again.

Pamela lowered her arm and turned to Barbara. "Let's search the apartment. We need to find that money."

Barbara gave a sharp nod, and the two split off into different rooms. Cabinets slammed open, drawers were pulled out, and closet doors rattled. Pamela sifted through piles of clothes, Barbara kicked aside storage boxes. The minutes stretched with nothing but the sound of rummaging and footsteps.

Finally, Pamela's voice called from the bedroom. "Barbara, I found the money. You won't believe where it is."

Barbara stepped in, brushing dust from her hands. "I bet it's under the bed, isn't it?"

Pamela gave her a dry look. "Close. It's under the mattress."

They bent down together, straining as they lifted the heavy mattress off the frame. Beneath it, neat stacks of cash filled the space, bundled with rubber bands, row after row of thick bills.

Barbara let out a low whistle. "Whoa. There must be like… six hundred thousand dollars here. Where the hell did she get all that?"

Pamela stared at the bundles, her expression dark. "I bet the professor was selling human organs. And she used that money to buy aid, and influence… she probably helped him abduct all those people."

Barbara's voice dropped, quiet but certain. "It's a good thing you're going to kill him in a couple weeks."
