Chapter 37 - The Even Split

Pamela and Barbara stepped inside the apartment, the heavy garbage bag brushing the floor as the door clicked shut behind them. Barbara shrugged herself out of her coat with in one smooth motion, tossing it onto a chair. Beneath it she wore a fitted crop top, her toned stomach and the curve of her back visible in the dim light.

Pamela's gaze lingered, her eyes drawn over Barbara's waist before she caught herself. Barbara noticed instantly, color touching her cheeks. "Why Pamela? Do you see something you like?" she asked, her tone edged with teasing.

Pamela's lips curved faintly. "I just might. I just might."

Barbara's face went red. She quickly turned toward the kitchen, pointing at the black bag. "Go bring that garbage bag into the kitchen. We'll split the money." Without waiting, she hurried down the hall to the bedroom, her ears burning.

Pamela carried the bag to the table, untying the knot and pulling the quilt back just enough to peek at the neat stacks of money inside. She sat down, waiting. The apartment was quiet, broken only by the faint sound of running water down the hall. Twenty minutes later, Barbara returned. She wore cotton shorts and a low-cut spaghetti strap top, her hair still damp and clinging to her shoulders. The shirt hugged her, highlighting her build. Pamela's eyes followed her again, unashamed.

Barbara stopped in the doorway, crossing her arms. "You're checking me out again, aren't you, Pamela?"

Pamela didn't look away. "What's not to admire about you, a beautiful redhead?"

Barbara let out a breath somewhere between a laugh and a sigh. "I didn't know you were into girls, Pamela."

Pamela tilted her head, her tone sharp but light. "I didn't know you were into girls."

Barbara shrugged, a flush still on her face. "I'm not… but I'm warming up to the idea."

Pamela rolled her eyes, settling back into her chair, but a faint amusement lingered on her face. She pulled the quilt open, revealing the neat stacks of cash. The banded bundles looked professional, rows of bills pressed tight.

Barbara stepped closer, her eyes scanning the table. "Looks like the money's already evenly stacked and wrapped."

Pamela studied it, her expression cooling. "It's probably not clean money, then. I wonder what the professor was doing to get all this."

Barbara's jaw tightened. "Like I said, he was selling human organs. A lot of those seedlings didn't have any internal organs left when they were turned."

Pamela's voice grew harder. "That means recovery for those people is impossible without internal organs. They're probably only alive because of the plants in their bodies."

Barbara's face shifted, the levity fading. "It's a shame, but that's the truth."

Pamela's tone dropped into cold promise. "We will make that bastard pay. Don't worry—my Midnight Rose will exact a terrible vengeance on his body." She lifted her gaze to Barbara. "But like I said before, we'll have to wait a couple weeks. Maybe a few months. We can't have Batman or your father tracking it back to us."

Barbara nodded, her hands resting on the table edge. "Oh, I'm well aware. And don't worry—I already have my own plans in motion to deal with some of these people who keep kidnapping me."

Pamela's eyes lit faintly, pleased. "Excellent."

Together they began sorting the bundles into two even piles, sliding them carefully across the table. Six hundred thousand became two neat shares of three hundred thousand each. Pamela packed her half into a clean bag while Barbara did the same with hers.

When the last bundle was sealed away, Barbara lingered, her eyes flicking toward Pamela with hesitation. "Are you leaving already? Or… do you want to stick around for a while?"

Pamela let a slow smile form, her gaze steady. "I think I'll stick around for a while."
