Chapter 40 - The Grandkids

Commissioner Gordon stood in the doorway, his gaze shifting between Barbara and Pamela, their hands still joined. His mustache twitched, his eyes suddenly brightening with joy. "Finally, my daughter's in a relationship with someone. I thought you'd be alone forever, Barbara."

Barbara blinked, her face tightening. "Father… what do you mean by that?"

"You've never shown any interest in guys, women… or anyone. At least now you finally have somebody you care about. I'm happy for you, Barbara."

He stepped forward and wrapped his daughter in a brief but warm hug. Barbara returned it, though her posture was awkward. "Dad, let me get dressed first…" She slipped out of his arms and hurried into the bedroom. Gordon stayed in the entryway, humming to himself.

A few moments later, Barbara returned, her hair brushed back, her clothes neat. She looked to Pamela, who was still wrapped in a bathrobe. "You should get dressed too."

Pamela nodded, her face calm. "Right."

She disappeared into the bedroom and came out a minute later in an oversized shirt and jeans, clearly borrowed from Barbara's wardrobe. The sleeves hung past her wrists, and the fit was loose in places.

Barbara frowned playfully. "Those clothes don't really fit you…"

Pamela rolled her eyes. "They're your clothes, obviously. I can't exactly wear what I had on the other night. I'll have to swing by my place later and grab something clean."

Gordon's eyes lit again, a mischievous glint in them. "Dear young lady… are you already trying to talk my daughter into letting you move in? I fully approve!" He let out a hearty laugh. "I'm a proud father—my daughter's in a relationship! Next, maybe I'll have grandkids! You two could always adopt, you know. It's never too late for that. Hell, I'll even keep paying for your college while you raise a kid together!"

He threw his arms up jubilantly. "Ahh, I'm so happy, my mustache is bristling with joy!"

A breeze rolled in from the window, catching the edge of his mustache and lifting it slightly, exaggerating his declaration. Barbara flushed red. "Father—!"

Pamela cringed, her hands half-raised. "Commissioner Gordon—!"

He blinked, then snapped back to reality. "Oh! I'm sorry. I got a little carried away imagining grandchildren."

He cleared his throat, then looked at Barbara more seriously. "Your mother's going to be so excited when she hears about this."

Barbara's expression turned to panic. "Father, you can't tell Mom! It'll embarrass me—she's always pressuring me to find someone just so she can have grandkids!"

Gordon waved a hand. "Relax. Your mother just wants you to be happy and have a partner. Grandkids will come in time. Like she always says, she supports whatever lifestyle you choose—and so do I."

Barbara's face flushed again, this time from appreciation. Her voice softened. "Thank you… Father."

Gordon gave one last approving look around the apartment. "Well, looks like everything's just fine here. I'll let the officer downstairs know to expect you more often, Pamela. It's a pleasure meeting you."

He nodded to Pamela and stepped back into the hallway. "You two have fun together." The door clicked shut behind him.

Pamela turned toward Barbara, her eyes still wide, a soft laugh escaping. "Oh my god… your father is so open-minded."

Barbara's shoulders slumped, her face flat. "I know. It's shocking."
