The Shadow stood in the doorway, the night at his back, his presence devouring the room.
Cassandra tilted her head like a cat spotting prey. Detective Hale's gun hand twitched. My fingers dug into Adrian's palm, grounding myself against the rising tide of panic.
The Shadow's voice rolled across the silence, smooth and mocking. "Look at us. A family reunion of sorts. Except—" He gestured lazily with a gloved hand. "Not everyone remembers the part they played."
His words slithered beneath my skin.
"Cut the theatrics," Adrian growled, stepping forward, gun steady. "You're not taking her."
The Shadow chuckled. "Always the gallant knight. Tell me, Adrian—does she know how deep your betrayal runs?"
I stiffened.
Adrian didn't flinch, but I felt the tremor in his grip.
"What are you talking about?" I demanded, my voice cracking.
The Shadow's gaze—or what felt like it—slid to me. "Oh, little one, you should be asking him. He's kept you close, but not close enough to tell you the truth."
"Enough," Adrian snapped. His voice was sharp, but his jaw was tight.
The room was a powder keg. One wrong word and it would ignite.
Cassandra laughed softly, circling us like a predator scenting blood. "This is delicious. The girl torn between two men—one who hunts her, one who hides her—and neither of them telling her the whole truth."
Her eyes glinted. "Reminds me of old times, Selena. Remember Vegas? The hotel job? You left me holding the bag while you slipped out the back."
The memory hit like a slap. A different name. A different face. A night of flashing lights and too many lies.
"Cassandra—" I began.
She cut me off with a sneer. "Don't bother. You've always been good at running. But tonight? Nowhere left to go."
Her gun rose. Aimed—at me.
Adrian shifted instantly, stepping in front of me. His own weapon trained back on her.
"Lower it," he ordered.
She smirked. "Or what? You'll shoot me in front of your precious damsel?"
"Try me." His voice was ice.
Detective Hale's voice boomed over the standoff. "Everyone drop your weapons! Now!"
No one moved.
The Shadow's laughter broke the tension like a knife. "Ah, Hale. Always the dutiful cop. Tell me—have you told them why you're really here?"
The detective's jaw clenched.
"What does he mean?" I demanded.
Hale's eyes flicked to me, then back to the Shadow. Silence stretched.
"Oh, she doesn't know." The Shadow's tone dripped with delight. "You're not here just to arrest her, are you, Marcus? You're here because you owe me."
Hale's gun wavered.
My stomach dropped. "That's not true."
But the detective's silence said everything.
Adrian snarled, stepping forward. "You son of a—"
The Shadow raised a finger, silencing him. "Now, now. Let's not ruin the game. Every piece has its place."
The lights flickered back on.
For a split second, the sudden brightness blinded me.
Then chaos erupted.
A shot cracked—Cassandra fired. Adrian shoved me down, the bullet splintering the wall behind us. Hale shouted, his gun jerking up, torn between targets.
The Shadow vanished into the confusion, slipping deeper into the house like smoke.
"Selena!" Adrian pulled me up, his arm locking around my waist. His heart hammered against me, hard and fast. "Stay with me!"
Cassandra fired again. Adrian returned fire, wood splintering near her shoulder. She ducked behind a doorway, laughing like a madwoman.
"You can't protect her forever, Adrian!" she called. "Sooner or later, she'll choose the winning side."
We ran, feet pounding down the hall. Adrian yanked open another hidden door, pushing me inside a narrow stairwell.
"Go!"
We stumbled upward, the dark pressing in. My breath rasped, fear clawing at my chest.
At the top, we burst into another room—a library, books stacked floor to ceiling. Safe for now.
Adrian slammed the door, bracing it with his weight. His gun still in hand, his chest heaving.
I stared at him, my voice trembling. "What did the Shadow mean? What betrayal?"
He froze. Just for a second.
"Adrian—"
Before he could answer, the door rattled violently. Cassandra's voice slithered through the wood. "You can't hide forever. Sooner or later, she'll see you for what you are."
Adrian's face hardened. His eyes met mine, raw and unflinching.
"Selena," he said, voice low, urgent. "No matter what you hear, no matter what they twist—I need you to believe me. I'm on your side."
My chest tightened.
Because for the first time, I didn't know if I could.
The door burst open.
And it wasn't Cassandra who stepped through.
It was Detective Hale.
His gun pointed—not at Adrian. Not at me.
At the floor.
"I can't keep this up," he muttered, his face pale. "The Shadow owns me. But I can't let him have you."
His eyes locked on me. "Selena, you don't understand. He's not just after you. He's after everyone tied to that night."
That night.
The words sent a chill through my bones.
Adrian stiffened beside me. "Don't."
But Hale pressed on, desperation cracking his voice. "The girl you were, the boy he was—none of this is coincidence. The Shadow made sure of it."
My head spun. My past, my lies, Adrian's secrets—it all blurred into something bigger.
Something orchestrated.
And the Shadow was pulling every string.
Before Hale could say more, a shot rang out.
His body jerked.
Blood bloomed across his chest.
I screamed as he crumpled, his gun clattering to the floor.
In the doorway, Cassandra lowered her weapon, smiling like the devil herself.
"One less piece on the board," she purred.
My blood turned to ice.
Adrian raised his gun, fury blazing.
But Cassandra only laughed. "Careful, darling. Pull that trigger, and you'll never get the answers she wants."
Her eyes met mine. Dark. Knowing.
"Because I know what the Shadow is keeping from you. And unlike him"—she nodded at Adrian—"I won't hide it."
Then she vanished into the hall, leaving Hale bleeding at our feet.
I dropped beside him, pressing my hands against the wound. Blood seeped hot between my fingers.
"Hale!" I cried. "Stay with me!"
His eyes fluttered, pain etched into every line of his face.
With the last of his strength, he grabbed my wrist.
"Don't… trust…" His gaze flicked to Adrian. Then to the door.
And then it went still.
My breath hitched.
Adrian crouched beside me, his jaw tight, his eyes unreadable.
"Selena—"
I jerked back, blood on my hands, confusion in my veins.
"What aren't you telling me?" I demanded. My voice cracked, sharp with grief and fear.
His lips parted.
And in that silence, the Shadow's laughter echoed through the house, chilling and triumphant.
