The warehouse smelled of salt and rust, but beneath that was something fouler—like fear, old blood, and betrayal simmering together.
Cassandra leaned against a broken steel beam, her silhouette sharp in the half-light, arms crossed, lips curved in that infuriating, smug smile.
"Back so soon, darling?" she purred, her voice silk laced with venom. "I'd say I'm impressed… but you're far too predictable."
I gritted my teeth, fists trembling. "Cassandra. Stay back."
"Oh, don't be so dramatic." She stepped forward, each movement deliberate, predatory. "You've been running your whole life, Selena, and for what? To end up right here? Right where I can watch you squirm?"
My pulse thundered. Thud. Thud. Louder. Louder.
I tried to steady my breathing, but the memory of every scar, every secret, every stolen moment of safety clawed its way to the surface.
"You think you're strong," she continued, circling me like a shark smelling blood. "But you're still just a little girl who believes she can survive a monster's world."
I stepped back, my boots scraping glass and concrete. "I'm not that girl anymore."
She laughed, cruel and musical. "Ah, but that's what's so delicious, isn't it? The Shadow marked you then, but you're only realizing it now. And all this time, Adrian…" Her gaze flicked, sharp, toward him, though he wasn't here yet. "…he's been protecting you. Or has he? Maybe you weren't just prey. Maybe you were the reason he stayed alive."
I froze. Every nerve on fire. "What do you mean?"
She tilted her head, eyes glinting with malice. "Do you really think he wasn't involved? That night, Boston. Dock 47. He was there, yes. But not to save you. To survive. To bargain. To be spared. And in doing so… he changed everything. He unknowingly… ensured you'd be chosen."
The words hit me like a fist. I staggered, clutching my chest. "No… that can't—"
"Oh, but it can," she said softly, almost kindly, before letting the knife twist deeper. "You weren't random, Selena. And Adrian? He never knew the half of it. You were always the center. The Shadow knew it. And because of Adrian's survival, because of his choices, you were marked. He's never told you because he… fears what it would do to you. Fear of what you'd do to him if you knew."
I dropped to my knees, shaking, tears spilling into the dirt. My life—everything I thought was mine—felt like it had been scripted by someone else.
"Selena…" I heard Adrian's voice before I saw him. Rough, ragged, angry. "Stop listening to her lies."
I looked up. Adrian stood in the doorway, rain still dripping from his hair, eyes locked on Cassandra. But his presence didn't calm me—it made the fracture in my chest widen.
"She's telling the truth," I whispered hoarsely, voice breaking. "You… you were there. And because of you, I…" My words faltered. My tears fell like shards of glass. "…I was marked. I've been hunted my whole life… because of you."
Adrian's jaw tightened, but he didn't speak. I could see the weight in his eyes—the regret, the pain, the truths he'd buried so deep even I hadn't known.
Cassandra smiled, cruel and triumphant. "See? You love him. And yet, he's the reason you've been trapped in this nightmare. Isn't that deliciously ironic?"
I could feel the rage building, raw and hot. My hands shook as I pushed myself up. "Don't… don't speak for me. Don't tell me what I feel. I hate you. And I hate him. And I don't… I don't know what I want anymore."
My words shattered into sobs.
Adrian's voice softened. "Selena… you're not alone in this. I can't take back the past. I can't change what happened. But I've never stopped trying to keep you safe. Even when I failed, even when you didn't know it…"
I shook my head violently. "Safe? You call this safe? My entire life has been a trap! I've lied, I've killed, I've run—and it's all because he marked me. And you…" I pointed at Adrian, my hands trembling with fury and grief. "…you let it happen. You were there! You could've—"
"I know!" His voice cracked like a whip. "I was there! And I hated myself every second of it! You have no idea what I've carried!"
The truth in his eyes cut through some of my anger, but only a fraction. The rest was still raw, bloody, and jagged.
Cassandra laughed, her voice slicing through the tension like a blade. "Oh, children of fate. The things we do for survival, the lives we ruin without realizing. But tell me… Selena. Do you understand why he marked you?"
I swallowed hard. My throat burned. "Why?"
"Because," she said, stepping closer, voice low and hypnotic, "…you were never meant to be just a survivor. You were meant to be a weapon. And only by surviving, by enduring, by hating, could you become what he truly needs you to be."
My stomach churned. "Weapon? What do you mean?"
Her eyes glimmered. "The Shadow doesn't mark the weak. He marks potential. And you… have more potential than even you realize. But it comes at a price."
I felt the weight of every lie, every betrayal, every scar in that single statement. My hands trembled, my legs shook, and for the first time, I realized the full cost of being marked.
Adrian stepped beside me, firm and steady, though his own eyes were haunted. "Selena. I can't change what was done. But I can stand with you now. I will help you control it. We can fight it—together."
I looked at him, torn between fury, grief, and the stubborn flicker of something like hope. My chest ached. My heart slammed. Thud. Thud. Faster. Faster.
"Together," I repeated, testing the word, tasting it, feeling the weight of it.
Cassandra's laugh echoed behind us. "Together? How touching. But you have no idea what's coming."
Before I could respond, a shadow flickered across the broken windows. A figure appeared, tall and silent, the face obscured by darkness. The warehouse seemed to shrink around us, the air thick with tension.
And I knew—bone-deep, gut-wrenching certainty—that nothing would ever be the same again.
Not my past. Not my future. Not even Adrian.
Because the Shadow had been waiting. And now… so had I.
