The hum of the house died.
Lights out. Silence thick.
Then—the red laser dot slid across the window, a predator's gaze painted in blood.
My heart stopped.
Adrian's hand shot out, yanking me behind him as the dot traced toward my chest. "Get down." His voice was razor sharp, no hesitation.
We dropped low just as glass shattered.
A bullet ripped through the window, spraying shards across the carpet.
My breath came in short, panicked gasps, but Adrian moved like a machine—controlled, precise. He pulled me by the wrist, dragging me down the hallway into the cover of shadow.
Another shot cracked the air. The frame that had held our photograph splintered. Pieces of my past scattered across the floor.
We huddled in the dark, the house breathing with us, silent but alive. Adrian's chest pressed against my back, solid, immovable.
"Stay behind me," he murmured.
"I'm not helpless," I hissed, though my hands trembled.
His reply was quiet, but final. "You're not expendable either."
Something about the way he said it made my throat tighten.
Another crash. Somewhere near the kitchen.
He pulled a gun from the back of his waistband, the metal glinting faintly even in the dark. He must have seen my eyes widen.
"Yes, Selena," he whispered, answering the question I hadn't asked. "I've always been armed."
The sound of footsteps echoed down the hall. Not just one pair—two. Maybe three.
Adrian pushed me toward a narrow door I hadn't noticed before. A hidden passage.
"In," he ordered.
I shook my head. "No. I'm not leaving you."
"Selena—"
"I said no." My whisper cracked, but it held. "If they want me, they'll go through both of us."
His gaze burned in the dark, unreadable. Then, slowly, he nodded.
The footsteps drew closer. Shadows stretched across the floor like reaching hands.
Then—voices. Low, muffled.
I strained to listen.
"…she's here. Don't lose her again."
The voice wasn't the Shadow's. It was female.
Adrian stiffened.
A tall figure appeared at the end of the hall, framed by the pale glow of a flashlight. A woman, sleek black leather clinging to her body, long braids swaying as she moved.
Her gun was raised. But her eyes—sharp, unflinching—landed on me.
"Selena Morgan." Her voice dripped with recognition. "Still running. Still lying."
My stomach dropped.
"Who the hell are you?" I whispered.
She smirked. "Name's Cassandra. We've crossed paths before. Though you probably used another name back then."
Adrian shifted, keeping his gun trained on her. "You shouldn't be here."
"Oh, but I should," Cassandra purred. "The Shadow doesn't forgive debts. And you, my sweet, have racked up more than one."
Her gaze slid back to me.
Adrian stepped forward, shielding me. "You're working for him."
Cassandra tilted her head. "Work? No. Partnership. The Shadow pays in power, and I like to collect."
My pulse thundered. Another enemy. Another reminder of how deep the Shadow's roots stretched.
But something in her eyes—mocking, knowing—made me realize she wasn't just here for him.
She was here for me.
Before I could speak, another voice cut through the tension. Male, older, steady.
"Enough."
From behind Cassandra, a man stepped into view. A trench coat flared as he moved, the badge clipped to his belt catching the faint light.
"Detective Marcus Hale, NYPD," he announced, gun drawn. His eyes swept between us. "Selena Morgan, you're under investigation for fraud, identity theft, and a list of cons longer than my arm. You're coming with me."
I froze.
Of course. My past wasn't just catching up—it was colliding from every direction.
The Shadow. Cassandra. Now a detective.
Adrian's voice cut through my panic. Cold. Steady. "Not tonight, Hale."
The detective's brows furrowed. "You think you can stop me?"
Adrian's stance didn't waver. "If you take her now, she dies. If you want her alive, you'll wait."
The detective hesitated. Just enough to show Adrian was right.
Because the Shadow wasn't done.
A sudden crash shook the house.
The front door slammed open.
Every head turned.
And then came the laugh. Low. Taunting. Familiar.
The Shadow.
"Ah, what a reunion," the voice drawled. His silhouette appeared in the doorway, tall, faceless against the faint glow of the city beyond. "The princess, the knight, the traitor, and the lawman. Quite the cast."
My blood iced.
Cassandra's lips curled into a grin. Detective Hale tightened his grip on his gun. Adrian's muscles coiled, ready to spring.
The Shadow stepped closer, slow, deliberate.
His gaze—though hidden—seared into me.
"Selena," he whispered, almost tender. "Did you really think you could run forever?"
My knees weakened, but Adrian's hand caught mine, steady and sure.
"No more running," he said, his voice like steel.
For the first time, I believed him.
