She changed into a tunic and trousers and left for the training grounds, with Alice following close behind.

She saw countless knights going about their business. She paused, her breath catching in her throat. She lowered her training sword. "Alice," she said, her voice soft with surprise. "Why do all the knights live here and not at the palace?"
Alice stopped her own movements, her professional demeanor returning. "The Emperor thought it was better for the Knights to be on the same estate as their General," she said.
"So the barracks and the imperial training ground are also here, although the distance is quite far from the mansion."
