Chapter 25 - Chapter 25 – Chains and Promises

By morning, Shells Town was buzzing with unease. Rumors spread faster than fire on dry wood—about the straw-hatted boy causing trouble, about Roronoa Zoro still bound to the post, about Captain Morgan's anger boiling to the surface.

Magnus moved through the streets in silence, every step measured. His silver-white hair brushed against the breeze, his sharp eyes fixed on the Marine courtyard ahead.

And there he saw them.

Zoro was still tied to the wooden cross in the blazing sun, his body worn from hunger, but his posture—straight, proud and unbroken that made him seem less a prisoner and more a statue carved of iron. Civilians lingered at the edges of the courtyard, whispering nervously about the "demon hunter" who would soon meet his end.

Then, like a flame sparking in dry kindling, he appeared.

Monkey D. Luffy, straw hat tilted back, grin bright as the morning itself, striding into the courtyard as if it belonged to him.

The crowd stirred in disbelief. Marines scowled. Zoro's head tilted slightly, his single eye narrowing at the boy who dared approach.

Magnus stopped at the edge of the gathering, his gaze locked on the two of them. His Observation Haki stretched thin, tracing their presences, tasting the clash of wills before a word was spoken.

So it begins.

"Hey! You're Zoro, right?" Luffy called out, his tone casual, cheerful. "You're strong! Want me to untie you?"

The courtyard froze. Civilians gasped. The Marines laughed in mockery. But Magnus watched only Zoro.

Zoro's lips twisted in something between defiance and disbelief. "Are you an idiot? Helping me makes you an enemy of the Marines."

Luffy tilted his head, grin never fading. "I don't care about that. I'm gonna be King of the Pirates. I want the strongest on my crew."

The words struck like a bell in the courtyard. Civilians gasped louder. Marines jeered, shouting insults. But Magnus's eyes narrowed, the faintest hum running through his chest.

There it is. The weight of words. Not arrogance, not bluster but the truth. His will burns so simply, so fiercely, it bends the air around him.

Zoro stared at the boy, his expression unreadable for a long moment. Then, despite the ropes, despite the hunger, a sharp grin tugged at his lips.

"You're insane," Zoro muttered. "But… if you untie me, I'll join you. Not because I believe in you because I have a promise of my own. And I'll need to reach the top to keep it."

The chains of fate clinked into place.

Magnus could almost hear them.

The Marines began shouting, drawing weapons, the air thickening with tension. But Magnus's sharp eyes lingered on the two men in the center of it all.

The king and the swordsman.

The sun and the blade.

The seas will bleed for their names.

For the first time in years, Magnus felt the corner of his lips twitch not quite a smile, but something close.

---

The courtyard boiled with chaos as Marines surged toward Luffy. Civilians gasped, their whispers rising into frantic waves, and Zoro strained against his ropes, smirking at the storm that had found him.

Magnus, standing at the edge, tilted his head slightly. His sharp eyes scanned the scene, cold and calculating, but a strange thought tugged at him.

Of course. This is how it always begins for Straw Hat.

He could picture it clearly—every crewmate Luffy would gather carried chains of tragedy. A thief abandoned by the world. A liar with dreams of the sea. A cook who bled for his honor. A swordsman who bore the weight of a promise.

Magnus let his lips twitch in the faintest ghost of a smirk. And then there's me.

For a fleeting moment, he imagined standing there, introducing himself with the same dramatic gravity the others carried. "My name is Magnus. My past… is unbearable."

Then the image cracked. He remembered warm meals. A sister who laughed too loudly. A brother who sparred with him at dawn. Parents who smiled with pride at their son.

The smirk slipped into something

dangerously close to amusement.

Compared to Earth… this life has been paradise. If I told Straw Hat the truth, he'd probably laugh in my face.

"Oi, you!"

The thought shattered as three Marines charged at him. Their blades cut the air—sloppy, desperate. Magnus moved without hurry, silver-white hair catching the sunlight.

The first swung. Magnus caught the blade between his fingers, Armament Haki sparking across his hand. The Marine's eyes bulged.

"Pathetic," Magnus muttered, snapping the sword like glass before sweeping the man aside.

The others lunged, but Magnus was already moving, his strikes swift and merciless. A knee to the gut. A precise elbow to the jaw. Both crumpled before their weapons even hit the ground.

Silence fell. Civilians gawked. Marines hesitated mid-step. Zoro's sharp grin widened.

And then Luffy's voice rang out, bright as ever:"Woah! You're strong! Hey—you should join my crew!"

Magnus froze. His cold expression didn't waver, but inside—his thoughts threatened to spiral again.

Join him? That's how it starts, isn't it? Every one of his crewmates has a tragic past. And me? What would I say?

He pictured it again: "I was born into a family that loved me. I had food, warmth, and a brother who had my back."

…He almost snorted aloud. Yes. Truly the most tragic of tales.

Still… his sharp eyes slid back to the boy. That ridiculous grin hadn't faltered, even in the face of dozens of Marines. That aura bright, wild, undeniable—pulled at something Magnus had thought long dead.

Naïve. Reckless. Radiant. Yet the world will bend around him. Even I can feel it.

The Marines regrouped, shouting for reinforcements, breaking his train of thought. Magnus stepped back, letting the storm surge toward its center again.

But the seed was planted.

For the first time, Magnus wondered not with disdain, but with genuine curiosity—what it would mean to sail under the banner of the Straw Hat.
