Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 – A Birthday in the Sun

The morning sunlight spilled into the courtyard, warm and golden, catching the edges of Magnus's white hair. The gentle scent of the sea drifted on the breeze, carrying the cries of gulls and the rhythmic slap of waves against the harbor.

Magnus stood by the window, watching the dockworkers and sailors begin their day. Today was no ordinary day as he had turned six. He had expected nothing. Birthdays on Earth had been muted affairs, if they existed at all, often marked by silence or tension.

But here…

A knock at the door drew his attention. "Magnus?" his mother's soft voice called.

He turned slowly, and the door swung open. Before him, a small table had been set in the courtyard, a simple cake with flickering candles sitting at its center. His father stood behind it, hands slightly trembling as he tried to appear casual. Darius leaned lazily against the fence, a wide grin on his face, and his sister, bright-eyed and smiling, held a handful of colorful ribbons.

"Surprise!" they all shouted together.

Magnus froze. His small frame stiffened, and a flush rose to his cheeks. His lips trembled as tears he hadn't expected pricked at his eyes. "F-For me…?" he whispered, voice barely audible.

His mother nodded, kneeling beside him and brushing a lock of hair from his forehead. "Of course, Magnus. You're our little boy. We love you."

Darius stepped forward, clapping a hand on his shoulder. "Six already, huh? Time flies, little brother. You're getting too tall for me to keep up with soon!"

Magnus's eyes darted between them, his heart swelling. I… I actually have a family. Not just people living under the same roof but people who cared, who celebrated him, who laughed with him. He felt a lump in his throat, unaccustomed warmth flooding his chest.

His father cleared his throat, eyes glistening faintly in the sunlight. "Magnus… happy birthday. You've grown strong and clever. Keep learning, keep training, but remember… you're never alone here."

Magnus blinked rapidly, struggling to hold back tears. He swallowed hard and nodded. "Th-Thank you… all of you."

His sister giggled, tying a small ribbon around his wrist. "See? Even I'm giving you gifts. Don't get too proud of yourself, though!"

Darius leaned down, nudging him gently. "Come on, Magnus. Blow out the candles before they melt. Make a wish."

Magnus took a deep breath. The flickering flames reflected in his wide, emotional eyes. He held it for a moment, heart racing not for power, not for training but for this simple, fleeting moment of love. Then he blew, and the flames winked out.

"Happy birthday, Magnus," his mother whispered again, wrapping him in a brief, tight hug. His father and siblings joined in, the four of them forming a circle of warmth he had never imagined he could have.

For the first time in his life, Magnus felt something new. Security. Belonging. And beneath it all, a quiet, steady fire of determination, sharpened not by fear or loneliness, but by love.

The small party went on laughter, small gifts, games in the courtyard but Magnus carried that moment in his chest like a treasure. A day unlike any other, one he would never forget.

As the sun dipped toward the horizon, casting long shadows across the harbor, Magnus sat quietly for a moment, gazing at the waves. The world beyond the island was vast and dangerous, yes but here, in this moment, he was home.
