In this world, he only knew where he lived. The Black city. It was divided into five rings which were built in a square shape. It had four gates, Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern gates and had spire in the middle that was so high it run through the clouds.
But for people like Wesley, they had no right to live even the first ring which was easiest to live in.
To live in even in the basic ring, you had to be a noble, a warrior or be part of a warrior family.
Wesley was neither of them.
Nobles controlled everything because of their bloodline, it was easier for them to become warriors. Then came the normal warriors who belonged to sects or schools.
You had to have a little bit of savvy to enter and the most important were credits you had to pay in order to enter and be given a beginners manual to start training.
And then we have the Outers, who lived outside the rings in shabby houses made of a metal that was black as night.
Wesley belonged to these. Almost all Outers worked in the mines . The mines produced the black ore that was sent to the black city everyday.
But to Wesley, this was a death sentence. He had just realized that his sickness was man made and him going to the mines was a no go for him. That was why he had shouted out to Grog.
''Boy, you have to remember that you're about to turn twelve.'' Grog said in a cold voice.
''The federation wont mind about you once you turn of age.'' he continued.
''So the only thing that remains for you to do is enter the mines in four days.''
''I will come in four days, be ready''
''And oh, enjoy your last days of peace, you will miss them.'' he said with a sneer on his face as he moved away.
''Cough, cough', Wesley continued coughing as he lay down in despair. He knew what Grog said was right.
So long as you are born, you are registered and the Federation that controls the city will give you subsidies like food and water until you are twelve years of age. After that you are on your own.
Outside the rings, the land could not grow anything, the soil was also black as if it was burnt so everything , food and water was gotten in and from the rings.
He knew he couldn't enter the only warrior school in the first ring because Grog was in charge of admitting potential warriors.
"Seems as if I am destined for the mines'' he whispered in despair.
