Chapter 53: Shady Preparations
So just like this, the next day started…
The maids swarmed around Nadeira like a pack of birds, pulling at her hair, tugging at ribbons, fastening jewels she did not ask for.
"This looks so pretty!"
"No, this one!"
"Just look at her!"
They chattered in lowered voices, beiny clearly aware of the banquet but avoiding her eyes.
Nadeira was sitting and then eventually standing still, some of her thoughts were just drifting elsewhere.
'Maribel…' She wondered what the little golden fish was doing now. Maribel had been her one friend in the mansion, the only one who made her laugh when she wanted to cry.
"Hold still, my lady," one of the maids muttered, tugging too hard at her braid.
Nadeira ignored her. 'Was Maribel thinking of me too? Did she even know I was here, trapped between kings and banquets?'
"Do you like this color?" another maid asked, holding up a ribbon.
"I don't care," Nadeira answered flatly.
