Chapter 49: In Chains
While Nadeira stayed locked in the dungeon above, talking to herself and fighting her own pain, far below the sea, the three princes suffered just as badly.
Caspian was sitting against the cold coral wall, staring at the heavy chains wrapped around his arms. He sighed loudly, for the fifth time in less than a minute.
Nyxmaris groaned. "If you sigh again, brother, I swear I'll drown you myself. You sound like an old whale with a broken tail."
Caspian gave him an angry glare. "You try being chained while our mate is out there alone. Every breath I take feels wrong."
Orrisian, lying flat on his back, added, "Every heartbeat feels wrong. It's like I'm being stabbed. Do you feel it too?"
"Of course I feel it," Caspian muttered. "We're bonded, remember? If she stubs her toe, I feel like I broke my human leg."
Nyxmaris burst out laughing, though it was hollow. "Then imagine what she's feeling now…alone, scared, angry. And all we can do is… rot."
