Chapter 28: She Overslept
The first thing Nadeira noticed when her eyes opened was the sunlight pouring into the room. The second thing she noticed was the clock.
She bolted upright. "Oh no. No, no, no."
The council meeting…She was supposed to be at the castle hours ago.
Instead, she had slept like a stone, not even waking when the maids knocked earlier. Her whole body felt like being stabbed by small needles in every muscle.
Nadeira rubbed her eyes and groaned. "I'm dead. The king is going to kill me."
A soft knock at her door pulled her from her panic. "Lady Nadeira?" Maribel's voice was sweet, but cautious.
"Come in," Nadeira muttered, dragging her blanket around her shoulders.
Maribel entered with a tray. The smell of bread and sweet fruit filled the room. She set it on the small table. "I brought you breakfast."
Nadeira let out a shaky laugh. "Breakfast? It's probably lunch already."
Maribel lifted her head, her eyes suddenly widened. "Lady Nadeira… your hair."
