Chapter 28 - Hunting the Wolves

The pack was large, with about forty wolves.

They had white fur, blue eyes and they were all incorporeal.

They varied in size, the smallest one was two meters high and six meters long. The biggest one, however, was seven meters high and fourteen long.

The one that she had killed a few moments earlier was comparable to a Peak Stage Rank 1.

The strongest one in the pack, however, was comparable to a Middle Stage Rank 2 according to [The Primordial Sense].

It wasn't a beast to scoff at.

There were six Rank 2 in total, all in the Early Stage except for what she presumed was the alpha of the pack.

The rest were cannon fodder that she couldn't give a single fuck about.

The wolves moved through the area, encircling the place where their member was killed.

They were silent, but she was sure that they were furious for obvious reasons.

They didn't leave and kept eyeing the corpse of their former companion with killing intent.

Lilith observed them for a while, carefully planning her next move.

After a few moments, she concluded that there were two approaches she could take.

The first approach would be to swiftly assassinate the leader of the pack, and then deal with the weaker ones slowly.

The second approach, was to launch an attack on their weaker members first, retreat, come back to kill some more, then retreat again and repeat. The standard guerrilla warfare.

The reason why there were multiple approaches rather than just attacking was that she didn't know what abilities they had. She was especially wary of the Rank 2, they could use heavenly essence outside of their bodies, so there were infinite possibilities.

After thinking about it, a dark glint flashed through Lilith's ghostly-blue eyes. Who said that I can't do both?

With a hungry grin, she lifted her spear.

Lilith arched her back and twisted her body, aiming to use her full momentum. Then, she deactivated both [Eye of the Storm] and [The Primordial Sense] the moment she channeled a great amount of her heavenly essence into her pathways.

Shew!

Boom!

With a loud cry, she threw the spear at the leader of the pack. The projectile broke through the sound barrier, and hit its target, producing a big smoke.

At the same time, Lilith disappeared from her place.

[Soul Flash]!

She reappeared in a blur behind a pair of shocked wolves, they were at a measly level of a Late Stage Rank 1.

Before they could even react, Lilith flashed next to one of them and brought her raised fist down on its head.

Boom! Crack!

The beast turned material again, and its skull was completely caved in, crushed between the ground and her fist. Blood, flesh, bone fragments, and brain matter were scattered around in a sickening gory cloud.

Without losing any momentum, she violently ripped off two of the sharp fangs of the dead wolf and faced the other.

Slash!

Using the fangs of its dead buddy as twin daggers, she sliced through the throat of the other wolf and stabbed its eye with the other one. Her momentum was so fierce that the wolf was brutally decapitated uncleanly.

The other wolves had now finally noticed her presence, and they furiously charged at her. They opened their mouths and growled, but their silent incorporeal throats didn't produce any material sound.

A navy blue energy covered Lilith's body, and her power surged. She circled her heavenly essence through her being to the limit.

She threw one fang at a wolf, piercing its eye and killing it instantly when the fang stabbed its brain.

Lilith charged forward and slid under another one, barely evading its jaw and slicing open its underside and guts.

She emerged behind it, and grasped its tail with an iron grip, not even letting its corpse fall down or its heart stop pumping blood.

She strained her muscles, and with a low growl, she used the dead wolf like a club and struck three others that were trying to close in, incapacitating them momentarily.

Without giving the others a single chance to encircle her, she used [Soul Flash] and flashed out of the place.

She appeared behind a Rank 2 wolf and threw the second fang at it.

Unlike the Rank 1, this one sensed her and quickly stepped to the side, evading the fang.

However, its other companion, which was behind it wasn't so lucky, it was just a Rank 1 and was stabbed directly at its heart.

Furious, the huge wolf opened its mouth. An extremely cold breath was released like a blizzard, aiming at Lilith.

[Soul Flash]!

It was the first time that Lilith felt threatened since the beginning of her onslaught, so she quickly used her movement spell.

The attack missed, and it froze the trunk of a large tree behind her. It had an unsaturated mystical cold to it.

She appeared next to the Rank 2's head and punched up at it. The stupid beast thought that bowing its head down to concentrate its attack on her was a good move, but it was wrong.

Clack!

Her powerful punch hit its lower jaw, and forcefully closed its maw mid-attack.

The beast reeled back, disoriented from the sudden collision. Before it could regain its senses, Lilith climbed up its back swiftly and touched its head with her palm.

Thud.

The soul of the wolf shattered upon immediate contact, and its body turned material again and collapsed.

Lilith guessed that the incorporeal nature of the wolves was their greatest advantage, but, unfortunately for them, it meant nothing against the Soul Calamity.

From the moment she made the first move, barely a dozen or so seconds passed.

[Lily, the pack leader has survived. It is injured and I cast a mind spell on it, but be careful.]

Hearing her brother's voice, she decisively willed and dismissed the spear.

Multiple navy blue sparks rushed from a distance and entered her body in nearly an instant, and then, she summoned the weapon again.

It all barely took a moment.

Standing atop the dead rank 2, Lilith looked toward the distance.

The dust finally cleared, and she was able to see the towering form of the pack leader.

Its pure hide was dyed red from its own blood, and a bloody mess was in place of its left shoulder.

The other rank 2 wolves stood in front of it in formation, while the other Rank 1 wolves were put in front of Lilith as a distraction.

The leader, regardless of its injuries, stood firm. Even though one of its limbs was as good as gone, it didn't appear less threatening.

In fact, it was eying Lilith with a predatory killing intent that knew no bounds.
