Chapter 39 - Chapter 39 – Old Gohan

"Hold on, little brother. Don't give it to him yet," Lazuli quickly grabbed Lapis's arm. "Make him take us on his spaceship first."

But Lapis leaned in close and whispered in her ear.

Though his voice was soft, Ken heard it clearly.

Lapis whispered, "Sis, that alien crushed the sandbag with just a tap... He said they train using rocks instead. I think we better not mess with him."

Upon hearing this, Lazuli glanced down at the pile of sand. Still, she showed no fear and whispered back, "We've got a gun at home. Go grab it. If he dares bully us, we'll shoot him."

"Got it." Lapis rushed back into the house, came out with a pistol, and proudly showed it off to Ken. "You know what this is?"

Ken: "…"

A brief silence.

"No idea," Ken shook his head.

"This is a gun! I know you're tough, but no one's tougher than a bullet," Lapis declared, emboldened by the weapon in his hand.

"Oh? Is it really that strong?" Ken lightly curled his finger.

Whoosh!

The pistol flew out of Lapis's hand and landed right in Ken's palm.

"Wh-what? You know magic?!" Lapis was stunned.

Lazuli's face turned pale.

The siblings stared at the gun in Ken's hand, shivering slightly.

"How does this thing work?" Ken pointed the gun at his own temple. "Is this how you fire it?"

"No—stop! That'll kill you!" Lazuli panicked and shouted.

Bang!

The gun went off.

Ken casually raised his hand and caught the bullet between two fingers.

Then, with a smile, he handed the still-warm bullet to the siblings. "Here, go ahead and play with it. It's still hot."

Lapis was dumbfounded.

Lazuli was completely shocked.

They both looked at Ken like he was a monster.

"A-are all aliens this powerful?" Lapis stammered.

"Kids shouldn't play with guns. Someone could get hurt! I'm confiscating this," Ken said. As he spoke, a flicker of ki glowed from his hand, shifting into a radiant purplish-red.

The glow engulfed the pistol.

Pop!

In an instant, the gun vanished into nothing—completely destroyed.

"Now, about that Dragon Ball…" Ken extended his hand.

Lapis hesitated, clutching the Dragon Ball tightly and looking at his sister.

"Give it to him," Lazuli said decisively.

"Okay…" Lapis tossed the Dragon Ball to Ken.

Ken caught it effortlessly and floated into the sky.

"I'll take you two out for some space travel sometime," Ken waved goodbye, then added, "But Lapis, don't forget your homework!"

Lapis: "…"

"If you don't do your homework properly, you won't be allowed on my spaceship," Ken warned with a smile.

"Then I'm not going!" Lapis huffed.

Ken silently wiped his brow.

So much attitude for the future Android 17.

Not even a spaceship is enough to make him do his homework?

"You promised you'd take me on a space trip!" Lazuli shouted, cupping her hands around her mouth.

Ken said nothing more and quickly left the scene.

He glanced at the Dragon Radar and flew off toward a mountainous area.

In just about ten minutes, he arrived above Mount Paozu.

Atop one of the mountain peaks, an elderly man in a martial arts gi with a white beard and a green cap was training outside his house.

Interestingly, embedded in the top of that green cap was a four-star Dragon Ball.

From above, Ken could instantly recognize the man.

It was none other than Grandpa Gohan, the adoptive grandfather of Son Goku.

If nothing changed, this man would one day take in the Saiyan child exiled from Planet Vegeta and name him Son Goku.

Thus would begin the legendary story of Son Goku's life.

Unfortunately, one night after Goku was taken in, he looked up at the full moon while peeing and transformed into a Great Ape—accidentally crushing Grandpa Gohan underfoot.

Years later, when Goku had a son of his own, he named him Gohan in honor of his late grandfather.

Ken had always found Goku's thought process a little baffling.

You wanted to honor your grandpa… so you gave your son his name?

That's... quite the tribute.

Ken scanned the area below but didn't spot Goku, which surprised him a little.

Goku should have arrived on Earth already. After all, Ken and Vegeta had spent time on Namek and then gone off to find Nappa and Raditz, which took quite a while.

Even though Goku's spaceship was slower, it should have gotten him to Earth days ago.

Ken spread out his senses, searching for Goku's energy.

Ten seconds later, he picked it up.

Even though Goku's power level was only 2, Ken was attuned to divine energy and could easily sense him.

Goku was about three kilometers away from Grandpa Gohan, on another mountain peak—no wonder the old man hadn't noticed him yet.

At the moment, Son Goku—or more accurately, Kakarot—was in the forest, devouring wild animals raw.

The primal instincts of a Saiyan were fully on display.

And as he ate, he cried. Each bite of raw meat brought another burst of tears.

He wept because his parents had abandoned him, sending him to this strange planet.

Clearly, Goku still retained fragments of his memories from Planet Vegeta.

Ken slowly descended and landed beside Grandpa Gohan.

Seeing someone descend from the sky, Grandpa Gohan was stunned, his face full of surprise.

"Did… did you just fly down here?" he asked, rubbing his eyes.

"I did," Ken nodded.

"You don't look very old…" Grandpa Gohan squinted at him.

"I'm five." Ken held up five fingers with a smile. "I heard you're very strong, so I came to spar."

"Haha! Truly, heroes arise from the youth. Alright then, I'll spar with you a bit!" Grandpa Gohan's expression turned serious. Despite Ken's age, he didn't let his guard down.

"Go all out and attack me," Ken said, beckoning him forward.
