So, Sung-min decided that I was an eyesore. One with reckless and crazy as their middle name for that matter, and dumped me with the police to handle.
He even gave his one-line statement that completely complicated the entire issue.
"He started the fire."
As if abandoning me wasn't enough, he even bore false testimony. Okay, so maybe it wasn't false and I had confessed outright but still... He didn't need to go that far.
It was as if he was taking measures to make sure I didn't get out and cause trouble in the next 24 hours.
But this won't do. I thought as I bit the tip of my thumb anxiously. I... I don't want to sleep in a cell.
I want my bed.
Oh right, I burned it.
But still... A five-star hotel would be nice. Or, I don't know, maybe the bed of the most famous and cruelly ostracized Esper. That would be the perfect place for me to sleep in.
But alas, I have been forsaken.
"Are you ready to talk?" That guy, his name is Sergeant Min. He was the guy who wouldn't let me breathe during the interrogation the last time.
Just look at him staring snuggly at me just because he was able to find a reason to lock me up.
He was staring at me with an instant coffee mix with an instant coffee sachet inside a plastic cup. In his mind, he's having high-quality coffee, heh.
He's just another cop who thinks he's fighting for Justice but can't even lift a finger when real disaster strikes and the people really need him.
Instead of paying attention to me, they should use their time wisely and crack down on the cases of those rogue Espers who are terrorizing civilians. Isn't that their job?
Keep the citizens safe.
Just because you can't beat an Esper, doesn't mean you can't save more victims.
With a better protocol, they'll be able to help more and more people but what are they doing?
Sitting back and waiting for a phone call from higher-ups before enforcing justice.
It's 'heroes' like them that make me sick.
I suddenly felt disgusted and turned my face away. I remembered a time in the past when I, a regular civilian, ran towards the cops for help because a rogue Esper had stolen my car and my phone, as well as everything else I had on me.
But they said they couldn't do anything about it. They... They told me to make a statement, but I never heard from them afterwards. I was sure they didn't do anything.
They locked my case because it was connected to a rogue Esper and their hands were tied. The higher-ups wouldn't move so they wouldn't move either.
And they expect civilians to put their hopes on them.
How pathetic.
Rogue Espers were those who had acquired powers but weren't registered under the government. They were stubborn and cruel, using their powers however they wanted.
Sure, they weren't born to be heroes and no one had the right to force them to be. They could live their lives for all we cared but the thing is, they wouldn't want to live their lives quietly as before.
They decided to add to the headache that the cracks gave humanity.
They were rogues, causing chaos, stealing, killing, and getting away with whatever they did just because they 'could' be the so-called 'hope' of humanity once they turned a new leaf.
The world is broken, I tell you.
Normal civilians who are terrorized by these Espers had to give up their property, their lives ones and even their lives just because they were powerless.
They were the meager sacrifice for a better tomorrow, the government said.
Because if they could manage to convince these Espers, which they plan to, more powerful people to take on the crack and save humanity would be registered.
But that never happened.
They never managed to convince these Rogues who felt they were on top of the world and untouchable. They didn't want to be controlled by anyone.
It got worse when they started kidnapping and enslaving guides. The most valuable assets of mankind because they were not as plentiful as Espers and they were needed to avoid Espers from having a breakdown.
So, a crackdown ensued.
Sung-min led this crackdown, and in less than a week, all rogue Espers were caught.
This... If this had been done a bit earlier, it would've definitely saved a lot of broken homes, and uselessly sacrificed lives.
"Hey, not gonna talk?" He asked, hitting the bars but I was so spiteful that if I were to respond to them, I would be charged for provoking the enforcer of law. "Well, do whatever."
He walked away and I let out a sigh.
Guess I was going to be sleeping in prison after all.
It was almost sunrise.
The wall clock hanging on the wall from across said so.
4 in the morning. Only two hours until sunrise but I doubt I'll be able to fall asleep at this rate.
There were just so many calculations going on in my head.
How do I get to that residential district and prevent that disaster with Sung-min? How do I even convince him to work with me?
I was going to suddenly barge into his place once the day brightened up but I didn't expect him to arrive after I had burned my house and worst of all, throw me in jail.
He just ruined the whole thing.
'Stupid Sung-min.' I rested my head on my knees. 'You don't know how hard I'm working so you don't get hated.'
I thought I wouldn't be able to sleep, but before long, my eyelids felt heavy and I slept, only to wake up again as if I had only shut my eyes for a minute, but the entire place was so bright and buzzing.
I was sure I hadn't slept at all but it was somehow 7am already.
"Hey you, come out." Sergeant Min said as he began to open the bars.
Am I getting out already?
"Where are you taking him?" Another sergeant asked.
"I need to take this guy to get tested." He said and my eyes widened. What? "Apparently, there was nothing found in his house that indicated a fire was lit intentionally or accidentally and he keeps claiming he wasn't the one who set the fire. So contemplations came up and we need to confirm if he suddenly awakened an Esper ability in his sleep."
Ah, so that's how it is.
Well, let's cooperate for now but I'm sure they won't find anything.
