Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: Opening the Treasure Chest

After hearing Yuko's detailed recount, Mo Yu finally understood the full story.

This time, when Yuko left the village on a mission, she was not alone—she was working together with another ninja squad.

The two squads consisted of four Chūnin and five Genin, including Yuko.

Though the mission encountered a few minor setbacks, it was eventually completed successfully.

However, on their way back to Konoha, they were ambushed by the Amegakure (Rain Village) ninjas—those were the ones Mo Yu had just dealt with.

The outcome, as Mo Yu had seen, was tragic. All of Konoha's two Chūnin squads, except for Yuko, were wiped out.

Hearing this, Mo Yu found it strange. With four Chūnin dead, how had Yuko survived?

But soon he discarded the thought. Luck was something no one could predict.

Besides, Yuko's survival was a blessing, and Mo Yu should be thankful for that.

Once Yuko finished speaking, Mo Yu noticed her depressed mood and didn't know how to comfort her, so he simply patted her shoulder.

"There's a cave over there. Let's head over and treat your wounds, so they don't get infected."

After a moment, Mo Yu spoke again.

"Okay."

Yuko nodded.

"Can you still move?"

Mo Yu asked.

Yuko replied, "I've used up all my chakra, but I should be able to walk... Ah!"

Before she could finish, Mo Yu suddenly picked her up in a bridal carry.

"It'll be faster this way."

Mo Yu smiled at her.

"You…"

Yuko's pale face turned pink, and she shyly buried her face in his chest.

Carrying the young girl's delicate body, Mo Yu lightly leapt onto a tree, then hurried in the direction of the cave.

As they jumped through the trees, Yuko felt nervous. She instinctively wrapped her arms around Mo Yu's neck.

This brought the two of them even closer.

Mo Yu swallowed and couldn't help but feel distracted.

Since coming to this world, it was his first time being so close to a girl.

But he wasn't an innocent, inexperienced guy. He had been in a few relationships in his past life.

With a glance, he admired Yuko's cute face and couldn't resist holding her a little tighter.

His hand, which had been resting on her leg, slowly slid to her hips.

Yuko felt Mo Yu's mischievous hand, and her face turned even redder, like a ripe fruit, as she glared at him indignantly.

"Your hand!"

Mo Yu wasn't embarrassed in the slightest.

"Ahem, I'm just worried you might fall."

He said casually, but his hand didn't move.

Faced with Mo Yu's shamelessness, Yuko had no way to retaliate. She glared at his back for a while, but it was useless. She had to close her eyes, pretending she didn't feel anything, but the constant blush on her cheeks betrayed her.

Luckily, they arrived at the cave soon. Mo Yu couldn't help but feel a little disappointed as he gently put Yuko down.

He had already prepared some anti-inflammatory medicine and bandages in the system, so he took them out and handed them to her.

"Treat your wounds first. I'll bury the bodies."

Before Yuko could protest, Mo Yu turned and ran off.

Yuko could only glare at his retreating figure with a "fierce" look. She muttered angrily, "You'd better run fast, or I'll… I'll…"

She thought for a moment, but it seemed like she couldn't do anything to Mo Yu.

Now that his strength was far greater than hers, he was no longer someone she could easily "bully."

With that thought, Yuko deflated like a punctured balloon and began treating her own wounds.

Meanwhile, Mo Yu returned to the bodies of the ninjas.

The reason he came back wasn't just to bury the corpses, of course.

The most important thing was… to loot the bodies!

He lined up all the bodies of the Amegakure and Konoha ninjas. After counting, there were 18 in total.

Among them, 6 of the Amegakure ninjas were killed by him, and the rest had died before he arrived.

To Mo Yu, these weren't dirty corpses—they were treasure chests waiting to be opened!

He rubbed his hands together and muttered a prayer.

"Gambling Saint, Gambling God, Gambling Hero, please bless me, Amen!"

Mo Yu first reached out to touch a Konoha ninja's body, and two white light orbs floated out.

Ten minutes later, Mo Yu had touched 17 of the 18 bodies.

However, the loot wasn't as great as he had hoped.

The most common items were silver bills—some as small as fifty ryo, others as large as a few hundred ryo.

Completely useless!

Mo Yu needed large amounts of money, not a few hundred ryo. It wasn't even enough to fill the cracks between his teeth.

Next, the most common loot was ninjutsu techniques.

But the highest-grade ones were only C-rank ninjutsu, and most were B-rank, which Mo Yu had already outgrown.

Still useless!

The only useful item was a C-rank ninjutsu—Water Release: Water Clone Jutsu.

This technique was similar to the Shadow Clone Jutsu of Konoha, but there was one downside: the water clones couldn't stray too far from the original, making them far less flexible than shadow clones.

But overall, it was still a practical technique.

If Mo Yu had known this technique before, the Amegakure ninja he had let escape might have been caught.

Reaching the last untouched body, Mo Yu "prayed" as he stretched out his hand.

"Pick up!"

This time, only one light orb appeared. Mo Yu was surprised, as the other bodies usually produced at least two or more light orbs, and some even had four or five.

Filled with a bit of surprise and expectation, Mo Yu placed his hand inside the orb, wondering if this light orb would bring him any surprises.

"It's a memory! And a complete one!"

This was the second time Mo Yu had encountered a memory orb.

The first time had been with Asai Haruaki's memory, but it was just a fragment.

This time, however, it was the complete memory of the Amegakure Chūnin who had died.

The corpse in front of him appeared to be at least twenty-four or twenty-five years old, and the memory of his entire life was vast. Given the system's processing speed, it took Mo Yu a full fifteen minutes to absorb it.

It felt like Mo Yu was experiencing a completely different life, from birth to adulthood, and finally, to being killed by "himself."

After finishing, Mo Yu's head felt dizzy.

For a moment, he couldn't even tell if he was Mo Yu or the Amegakure Chūnin, "Yanagawa Makoto."

After a while, he finally sorted out his identity and regained clarity.
