The guy Laura paid was in the waiting area at the main police station, shaking his leg with nerves. His clothes were all messed up, his hair a wreck, and the dark circles under his eyes told of sleepless nights. This wasn't how things were supposed to turn out.
He had risked everything for Laura broken into Rachel's place, put the papers where she told him, and stayed hidden for days. But when he called to get the rest of his money, she laughed at him.
"The job's not done yet," she had said before hanging up the phone.
That was when he knew she was never going to pay him. She had taken advantage of him. And if she thought he would stay quiet about it, she was very wrong.
Now he was there, leaning forward in the questioning room as the detectives sat across from him.
"I'll make this easy," he stated.
"You want to know the truth about Rachel Crawford's fake marriage papers? I can tell you all about it. But I want protection and a deal."
