Rachel couldn't take her eyes off the phone screen for a long time, even after the video had ended, her stomach feeling sick with worry. She played it over and over, hoping to see something different, wishing she couldn't even find proof that it wasn't real.
But every time, the result stayed the same.
Her old project manager, grey haired, smiling in a nervous and cunning way in a dark office, shook hands with a man Rachel knew almost right away. A man who had been all over the news two years before for running a huge money laundering plan.
A man who was now in jail.
The video had parts cut and put together, and the sound wasn't all that good, but it was clear
what it meant: her past project manager had taken money from the money launderer to pay for one of her first projects. And because of that, everyone could think her whole company was built on stolen money.
Her throat felt tight.
The message was still easy to see on her screen, written boldly so she couldn't miss it.
