Author note: So before anyone jumps down my throat sideways about this chapter I want to clarify something. Yes, he is really badly injured. No it was not something that came out of nowhere. It's been hinted at quite a few times that he was getting cocky and overconfident.
------------
I wasn't surprised that I was in the hospital wing as the portrait had likely hurried to find help after I did something I admit might not have been the smartest. What I was surprised about was the fact the spear was brought with me and not confiscated as the dangerous artifact it is. That was until I noticed something rather unusual, a sort of mental connection at the back of my mind pointed right at the damned thing.-
'Oh you have got to be shitting me!? I won it's allegiance and still got toasted!?' I mentally raged.
It was beyond annoying to even think about. Like in any other situation I might be beyond the moon with joy. But in this case I was severely injured and even partially crippled it seemed like. Before my mind could tear itself apart because of conflicting emotions the sound of footsteps rang through the still air and the curtain to my bed was pulled aside to reveal Dumbledore, Flitwick and an unfamiliar older woman I wasn't familiar with but assumed to be Madam Pomphrey. -
"Ah I see you have woken up. I must admit I was quite shocked when Professor Gervain's portrait came seeking aid after a student suffered an accident. Not as much of a shock as you yourself from what I am told however." Dumbledore said trying to bring humor to the situation.
I was not amused.
"This is no joking matter Albus!" The woman who I assumed was Pomphrey scolded the man sternly.
"Of course Pomona, I merely thought a touch of humor might raise the spirits is all." Dumbledore said placatingly.
"Alex can you tell us exactly what happened? We know from Professor Gervain's portrait that you picked up the spear and then it seemed to detonate but the only theory we have as to why is not one we wish to entertain until we hear your side of the incident." Flitwick said seriously.
I collected my thoughts before speaking "There's not much more to the story I'm afraid Professor. I picked up the spear to examine it closer and I had the illusion of holding the entirety of the sky in the palm of my hand before the pain came and then I woke up here." I said mostly honestly.
"It would seem our fears have been confirmed. Even in misfortune there is a stroke of luck. You Young Alex have been subjected to an ancient wizards inheritance test and been found worthy. The spear is for all intents and purposes yours now." Dumbledore said kindly but didn't seem happy about it at all.
I raised my hands to look at them before turning my eye to meet his "I don't feel like I was deemed worthy." I said flatly.
He sighed "What do you know about wizarding inheritance tests?" he asked calmly.
"Clearly not enough." I said bitterly.
"Albus are you sure this is wise?" Flitwick asked the old man worriedly.
"Given the nature of this matter he more than any deserves to know the reason for this tragedy." Dumbledore said seriously while shooting a brief glance to the spear.
Flitwick caught the look and agreed reluctantly.
"Very well Albus. I trust your judgement." he said before letting the headmaster address me again.
"You must forgive Filius. This information is usually highly restricted to students to prevent them from seeking out wizarding artifacts for their inheritance in overconfidence. In your case it's best you are informed given your ownership of such an artifact by accident." The old man explained honestly.
"I understand." I said tiredly.
What else was I supposed to do? Rage about my own misfortune? What happened was my fault and I couldn't blame it on anyone but myself really. I was overconfident. I believed that if haki let people dominate swords in the world of one piece then I could use the same thing on the spear here. Unfortunately I was operating on a misunderstanding about the nature of the seal on the spear and ended up screwing myself over instead.-
"I suppose I should begin by clarifying that there is no overarching theme to wizarding inheritances but conditions set by the items original owners instead. These conditions tend to fall into three rough groupings however. Skill, power and compatibility. Skill based inheritances require that the one taking this test show an adequate level of skill in a chosen field of magic." he paused for a moment to swallow his saliva.
"Power based inheritances are the most common and require the one attempting the test to posses a certain degree of raw power. Finally is the compatibility based inheritances. These are often the most brutal usually as the item uses the most forceful method of testing the compatibility of a wizard with their own nature. If you fail then you perish but even if you survive the price paid is rarely worth it. You were subjected to such a test." he finished seriously.
I remained silent for a moment as I thought over this information and had to admit it made sense. Zeus wouldn't leave his spear behind for someone who wasn't suited to his own brand of affinity if the tales of him were accurate. The man was vain, arrogant and petty with an insatiable lust. Naturally he'd want his inheritor to be as much like him magically speaking as possible.-
"Will I ever return to normal?" I asked the biggest question on my mind finally.
"I can not in good conscience lie to you child. It does not appear that way. Your hands will always bear the scars of this test and your eye is too soon to say. We are doing all we can to repair the damage but the nature of the magic makes it hard to repair precisely as it was before." Pomphrey spoke up honestly and not without a good measure of pity.
"I see. The eye will prove annoying to deal with but I can handle mere scarring. I'll also need to be more careful around magical objects from now on. On a different topic what about the various treasures that were in that room with me?" I asked thinking about that mass of valuable things.
"You are rather calm about accepting your situation." Dumbledore said with a genuinely surprised look.
"Why wouldn't I be? I can do nothing to unmake the past so moving forward is all I can do. Why should I wallow in regrets when I have so much more to look forward to in the future?" I said firmly.
