Chapter 30 - The Hero

The next day. With the newest captain of squad six, inside the laboratory of the mad scientist Mayuri Kurotsuchi. Ben stood at the foot of a pod. Four more surrounded this pod each giving off a sickening green hue.

The pod's light and the faint emerald glow of his watch were the only sources of light in the otherwise pitch black room.

"Harribel, I promise I'll make everything right." Placing a hand on the woman's pod, the glass on the pod was transparent allowing him to gaze at her face.

Ben held back his rage, speaking in a dark voice, "I'll make sure that Aizen pays for what happened to Apacci."

A violent torrent of anger continued to well up within him, he could feel his body react. His heart raced as his eyes became sharp and dagger-like.

'Stop it boy, before you incinerate them.'

Within the rolling green fields of Ben's inner world, seated upon his throne was Barragan.

'I can sense when you're about to transform, I wish I could convey how much of a headache that power is. I can understand your feelings, save that anger, let it be the foundation for you to become stronger.'

Ben's emerald eyes softened, he placed a hand on his chest, helping in the stilling of his heart.

A calm smile appeared on his face, "Thanks old man, I…needed that. Gwen promised me that she'll take care of it, but even that girl Orihime could not help her. Each day that passes I get more worried, what hit them wasn't just any old attack. Pure concentrated evil, we don't know how it would interact with their biology."

His voice and posture became more sullen, as he listed off the issues before them.

'Uh, I understand, but the only thing you can do at this current time is focus on what you can do. As much as I despise regurgitating what that blazing bastard Yamamoto spouts. But, there are more important things to do.'

The old king sounded sincere, which brightened the mood of his young partner.

"Huh, you actually do give out great advice when you need it, old man. Alright time to stop moping around, my squad needs me." Filling his chest was not a sense of duty born from his desire for vengeance, instead from his promise to his lieutenant. People were counting on him to be a hero after all.

'Good. Huh, isn't the remainder of your squad scheduled to return today? It has been a little over three days since the death of that noble man. How are you going to handle their reaction to the news, Captain Tennyson?'

Squad six's Captain noticed the slightly amused tone of his technically sword spirit. A cocky smile spread across the alien shape-shifter's face.

"Don't worry old man, have faith in your partner. Plus, Renji's on my side he could deal with anything like that…I think?"

The trip back to his headquarters was quite pleasant, he arrived at the building which resembled a Greek inspired courthouse.

Grand ivory pillars supported a triangular tiled roof, two massive gold in laid oak double doors stood as a sign of the wealth that flowed within the division.

Before the hero could get any closer, the doors burst open and a figure launched towards him. His instincts took over, he met the figure mid air by leaping towards them.

Slipping an arm underneath their neck and lower back, he landed a few steps back.

Looking down Ben recognized the individual, their defining character rustic being their lapis colored hair. The black eye patch on her left eye that attempted to hide her scared eye.

"Himino! Who did this to you?!" Ben glared at the now parted door, the distinctive sound of clinking clogs made it to his ears.

The young woman in his arms attempted to speak, but was ignored by her Captain. At the door were two individuals, both with silver hair and amethyst eyes.

A man with a toned muscular build and a tall woman with prominent muscles perhaps around the same age as Ben himself. Their Zanpakuto were unsheathed, they looked down at him with a mix of hatred and disgust.

"So this is our new captain, brother?" The woman spoke in a calm voice, if looks could kill the look from her eyes would have put the emerald eyed young man in the grave already.

"He's not even a Soul Reaper, let alone a noble sister." The disgust of the man could not be more obvious to Ben.

"Enough of that! Who are you two?! And why did you attack one of my subordinates?!" The omnitrix glowed with a fire-like intensity, green circuits flowed on the body of the young woman in his arms.

He ordered the device to heal her from any injury by using the 'DNA Repair' function. He placed her down, then ran towards the door he intended to simply run past the duo.

His hopes were dashed. The duo lashed out with two round house kicks.

Ben's mind worked over time, he saw through the obvious trap of the duo. He fell to the floor, crouching then rolling into the entrance behind them.

Seeing their trap fail, the two silver haired Soul Reapers ran towards the young captain.

At that moment, Ben turned and made his way deeper into the base. The silver haired twins' vision was overtaken by an emerald flash.

Before them was no longer the athletic young man, instead a dinosaur-like alien with a cone shaped head, protected by a black helmet. It had blue skin, black markings surrounded its lips and turquoise eyes.

Instead of hands, the creature had spear-like claw tips, its legs resembled that of a dinosaur with two clawed toes that clutched slick black spheres.Behind it a long blue striped tail swung behind it.

XLR8 became a blur to the duo, and zoomed deeper into the headquarters. Zooming deeper and deeper, as the interior of the base became blurred.

The enhanced senses of the Soul Reapers struggled to properly track the alien. What they could perceive was merely a line of blue after images.

Inside the hallways of the base were the brushed and battered forms of the other squad members. The downed members did not even see who saved them, all they registered was a gust of wind.

"Stop it, you pretender!" The man with amethyst eyes abused flash step to try and keep up with the alien. He understood the aliens abilities, his speed was greater than both his and his sister's.

Even so the creature slowed down, to the point where his form could be perceived by the silver haired man whenever he saved a squad member.

Aiming to end things in a single blow his thrust forward, only for his zanpakuto to be jammed into the wooden floor.

"What-?!" Looking around he noticed that he was inside a traditional kendo dojo. A light bulb from above illuminated the room. His eye brow curled, he fiddled with his hair, a question at the tip of his tongue.

"How did I get here- wait. Niwa!" After his cry the man then launched himself through the door.

At the west wing of the barracks Niwa chased XLR8, multiple rays of varying colors chased the alien.

None-met their mark.

Her face scrunched up as she saw how futile her attacks were, the frustration only increased in intensity as she realized that her brother was nowhere to be found.

She breathed out, which caused her face to return to normal, she placed her fingers on the spine of her blade then shouted.

"Bind, Ukime!" In the instant the barracks shook, those who could move became distressed and confused. An army of thorn covered vines speared throughout the base, tangling everyone within.

Niwa stood in a hallway taken over by vines, holding the hilt of her blade which spewed out her vines. She could sense something approaching at high speeds, while her senses may not have been able to perceive the shape-shifter Ukime would.

Sharp pain spread through the blue dinosaur-like alien, looking down his green eyes went wide.

His ankles, or what would be his ankles, were wrapped up by thorns, his breath hitched. He could feel them add pressure onto his ankles; the thorns bit into his flesh and attempted to shatter his bones.

"Quick on your feet, but slow in the head. Why don't you take off that ugly helmet for you?" Niwa moved her hand that held her vine spewing hilt. The thorny vines came to life turning from a flood on the floor, ceiling and walls into several sharp tendrils.

All of them flew at the alien with insane speed, a flash of emerald light pushed back all of the shadows.

Niwa's conviction would not allow her to relent; she forced herself to stop. As the light blinded her, she created more tendrils and struck every piece of space that existed.

She curled up a brow, a few meters ahead of her several tendrils were hanging in mid air as if they struck a hard object.

"Now what-" Her question was left to the wind as the thorn vines that were stuck became encased within blue-ish green crystal.

'Crystals? This is a bad match for me. My vines only tasted a little of his blood, even if it was more it seems like he got rid of it all.' Her vines were connected to her, so the vines could receive information that would be transferred over to her.

Her foe's blood was unique to say the least, most blood smelled like metal and tasted like rust to her. However the blue creature smelled like flowers and made her think of chicken, oddly.

"First off, that visor took a while to make it too so show some respect. Secondly, don't cover my new base in vines!" Diamondhead smashed his fist in front of himself, pillars of crystals shot toward the silver haired woman.

Seeing the oncoming wave, Niwa summoned all the vines scattered throughout the barracks. She commanded them to entangle her, the green plants obeyed the result of which created a spiraling sphere of thorns.

The sphere stopped the charge of the deadly point of the crystals, but they failed to stop the force behind them. Both the vines and their master were launched to the other side of the hallway.

'Dodge to the right boy.'

Without any questions Diamondhead did as the old king commanded, propelling his large form to the right using his free hand.

Looking back at his original position, he felt grateful to have the ancient Hollow act as his partner. His own crystals flew to the spot where his head was, and slammed together.

A small explosion occurred as small diamond shards fell to the floor.

"You're quite quick on your feet, pretender." Walking into view from behind the suspended sphere of thorns was the silver haired man. As if on instinct upon hearing the man's voice the thorny shield collapsed.

"Chikara! Where were you?!" The woman looked furious, the man seemed apologetic. However what drew the attention of the alien was the all black halberd he carried.

"Two on one, eh? I like them odds." Beneath his impenetrable crystal skin, Diamondhead could feel his body itching to get back to fighting.

"Huh?" The woman's eyes became purple colored daggers as it felt like she was peering into the alien's soul. "Someone like you, an ex subordinate to one of the worst traitors in the Gotei's history. Want to complain about not being given the privilege of a fair fight?"

"'Behind you brat.' Barragan warned the alien, a piece of loose debris flew at his head.

Only to be destroyed by a segmented blade.

"So the one has finally arrived, how could o' great lieutenant?" Chikara spoke.

Renji appeared kneeling right next to his crystal Captain, his more joyful demeanor disappeared. That was hidden by the cold steel like eyes that stared down the silver haired siblings.

"Chikara and Niwa Dosei. Also known as the current first and second seats of Squad six. I understand your feelings but-"

"Don't you dare try and say you understand us! You stood by and let this monster take up the place of the man his former ally murdered. I respected you Lieutenant Abarai, but now not any more. We're going to defeat both of you and take those positions back ourselves!" Niwa pointed her help towards the red haired man with a pained expression on her face.

Her brother simply pointed his halberd at the alien with a lethal look in his eyes.

"Hmm, this could be a great bonding moment. First battle as captain and lieutenant." The walking mountain of crystals seemed to be the only one of the gathered individuals seeing a positive to the whole ordeal.

"Uh, well you're definitely more cheery than the old captain." Renji smiled as he readied his blade.
