Chapter 144 - One Truth

They didn't plan to do it that day.

But once the idea was there, it stayed.

It followed them through the afternoon, through quiet pauses and unfinished sentences.

By the time the sun started setting, they were back at the field again.

Same place.

Different feeling.

Velithra sat cross-legged, the notebook beside her.

Kai stood for a moment before sitting down across from her.

Neither of them spoke right away.

"You don't have to do it today," Kai said.

Velithra shook her head.

"If we keep putting it off, we won't do it at all."

He knew she was right.

Still—

"That one's different," he said.

"It is."

Silence stretched between them.

Then Velithra picked up the notebook and flipped to the list.

She tapped item four lightly.

"No regrets."

Kai exhaled slowly.

"Okay."

She closed the notebook and set it aside.

"Do you want to go first?" she asked.

Kai looked away, thinking.

Then shook his head.

"You go."

Velithra hesitated.

Not because she didn't have something to say—

But because saying it would make it real.

Finally, she spoke.

"Sometimes," she began quietly, "I act like I'm okay with everything because I don't want to make it harder for you."

Kai looked at her immediately.

"But I'm not always okay," she admitted.

Her voice stayed steady, but softer now.

"I just don't want you to feel guilty for choosing something important."

Kai's chest tightened.

"Velithra—"

She shook her head gently.

"Let me finish."

He nodded.

"I'm proud of you," she said. "I really am. But part of me is scared that one day… you'll build a life that doesn't include me anymore."

The words hung in the air.

Honest.

Unfiltered.

Real.

Kai didn't speak right away.

He moved closer instead.

"Thank you for telling me that," he said quietly.

Velithra looked down slightly.

"That's my truth."

He nodded.

Then it was his turn.

Kai ran a hand through his hair, searching for the right words.

"I've been trying to act like I'm not scared," he admitted.

Velithra looked up.

"But I am," he continued. "Not of leaving. Not of the program."

He met her eyes.

"I'm scared that I won't be enough to keep this."

Her heart softened instantly.

"Kai…"

"I know you said we'll figure it out," he said. "But part of me keeps thinking… what if I try everything and it still changes?"

Velithra shifted closer.

"That's your truth?"

He nodded.

"Yeah."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

They had said it.

The things they were both holding back.

No pretending.

No protecting.

Just honesty.

Velithra reached for his hand.

"You don't have to be enough to hold everything in place," she said softly.

He frowned slightly. "Then what do I have to be?"

She intertwined their fingers.

"Just real," she answered.

Kai let that sink in.

Then he pulled her gently into an embrace.

This one felt different.

Not lighter.

But deeper.

Because now—

They weren't just sharing moments.

They were sharing fears too.

After a while, Velithra pulled back slightly.

"Item four?" she asked quietly.

Kai gave a small smile.

"Completed."

She wrote it down later.

But neither of them needed the notebook to remember this one.

Because some truths…

stay with you longer than any list.
