Kai didn't think it would be hard.
"Just a day without phones," he said confidently the night before. "People did that for centuries."
Velithra raised an eyebrow. "You check yours every ten minutes."
"That's exaggerating."
"Is it?"
The next morning proved her point.
They met in town near the small bakery.
Kai checked his phone once while waiting.
Then again.
Then a third time.
Velithra walked up just as he was about to look again.
"Give it to me."
"What?"
"Your phone."
He hesitated. "You're enjoying this too much."
She held out her hand.
Kai sighed dramatically and handed it over.
Velithra placed both their phones in her backpack and zipped it shut.
"That's it," she said. "No phones."
Kai rubbed his temples.
"I already miss it."
"It's been twelve seconds."
They started walking down the street.
Without phones, everything felt… different.
No checking the time.
No random scrolling.
Just walking.
Kai glanced around the town.
"I never realized how quiet this place is."
Velithra smiled slightly.
"That's because you're usually looking down."
They stopped at a small park bench.
A group of kids were playing nearby.
A dog ran across the grass chasing a ball.
Kai leaned back and watched for a moment.
"This is weird."
"In a bad way?"
He shook his head.
"In a calm way."
Velithra looked pleased.
They spent the day doing simple things.
Walking through town.
Trying a new café.
Watching street performers in the square.
Talking more than usual because nothing distracted them.
At one point Kai asked, "What time is it?"
Velithra laughed. "No idea."
"Kind of freeing."
"Kind of terrifying," she replied.
The afternoon slowly drifted toward evening.
They found themselves back at the field near the school.
Kai stretched out on the grass.
"I think I survived."
Velithra sat beside him.
"Barely."
He glanced up at her.
"You know what I realized today?"
"What?"
"I usually fill silence with my phone."
Velithra nodded.
"Most people do."
"But today…" he continued, "the silence wasn't bad."
She looked down at him.
"That's because you had someone to share it with."
Kai smiled slightly.
"Yeah."
Velithra finally pulled the phones from her bag.
"Item three," she announced.
Kai sat up and took his phone back.
But instead of checking it immediately…
He placed it beside him on the grass.
"Not yet," he said.
Velithra noticed and smiled.
"Progress."
Kai nodded toward the notebook she carried.
"You can write it down."
Velithra opened it and wrote carefully.
3. One full day with no phones — Completed
Kai leaned back again, hands behind his head.
"Five left."
Velithra closed the notebook.
"But some of the harder ones are coming."
Kai turned his head toward her.
"Like number four?"
She nodded slowly.
Tell each other one truth we've never said before.
Kai exhaled quietly.
"Yeah," he said.
"That one."
And suddenly the list didn't feel so easy anymore.
