I let out a humorless laugh and sank back down into the chair. Husband and husband. The words rang in my ears like a joke.
My eyes drifted back to Lucien. He hadn't moved, of course. He just lay there, beautiful and lifeless, like a statue.
I stayed seated, staring at him, my mind restless. I was about to stand up, to leave this ridiculous scene behind, when it hit me—I still hadn't said what I wanted to say. The words that had been rotting inside me for years.
I turned to the maid. "Do you mind excusing me? I need a moment alone with… my husband." The word almost made me gag, but I forced it out.
She blushed slightly, nodded, and bowed. "Of course, Master Avery." Then she quietly slipped out of the room, closing the door behind her.
I leaned forward, elbows on my knees, my eyes locked on his face. My jaw tightened. "So… here we are, huh? Married. Can you believe it?"
