Chapter 23- Husband And Husband
AVERY >< ><
"Master Avery, wait for me," the maid called behind me, but I ignored her completely. If I stopped now, if I gave her a chance to talk me out of it, I might lose the nerve to do this. So I kept walking, my steps faster, heading straight for that room.
When I finally reached the door, I stopped. My chest rose and fell heavily as I placed my hand on the doorknob.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
It was just a door. Just a room. Just a man lying unconscious inside. But my palm was sweating like I was about to step into a battlefield.
I turned the knob slowly, and the door creaked open.
The room was dim and quiet, except for the steady, rhythmic sound of machines. The beeping echoed through the silence, mechanical. My eyes landed on him—the man himself, Lucien.
There he was, lying on that massive hospital-like bed, wires and tubes strapped to him like he was some kind of fragile doll that needed to be kept together.
