Ninzu's voice did not rise; she just kept chanting.
Then she lifted her hands, and the markings on the altar where Lara lay flared. Thornak stepped back instinctively.
Ninzu's apprentice joined the chant, and the altar shone even brighter.
Lara's eyes snapped open, glowing white. Her lips moved on their own, and a strange chant poured out of her mouth.
"Ai re thyiu hyaba… Solan vekir thal'raen…"
"What is she saying?" Thornak asked.
"It is a language I do not know," Ninzu replied.
At that very moment, back in the castle, the little girl Jasmine had brought was sitting with Liam and Corin. They were laughing together when, without warning, the girl collapsed.
"Are you all right?" Liam cried, shaking her shoulder.
But she did not wake. Her skin was cold—far too cold. As Liam leaned closer, he heard her whispering in her sleep.
It was the same words again and again.
