Chapter 25 - chapter 25

Yuta leaned back into the sofa, legs spread, his posture completely unflattering against the cushions. "It's so comfortable. It's much softer than the tatami at the team quarters. Feels like some kind of noble experience. If I ever don't want to sleep there again, I'll come over to your place."

"But this is a new house," Matsumoto Rangiku pointed out. "You barely have any furniture, no quilts or mattresses either. Let's go buy some together."

She'd noticed the lack of basics during her earlier visit and brought it up now. Yuta gave a simple nod. "Let's go."

"Wait," she said, stopping at the entrance. "There are too many rooms. If we're buying that much stuff, it'd be too much for the two of us to carry. I'll head back to the 10th Division and grab some boys to help."

She pulled Yuta along with her, back toward the squad's quarters.

He leaned casually against one of the thick wooden pillars at the door to the 10th Division, arms crossed over his chest. In front of him stood another thick column, gleaming slightly on the clean wooden floor beneath his feet. To one side, there was a wooden staircase made from three rectangular planks joined by two angular frames-a proper set of steps-but with gaps spaced between each one. Beyond the stairs stretched a lawn, freshly tended and precise in its layout.

To his right was the team room belonging to the 10th Division. Matsumoto Rangiku had already stepped inside and was gathering reinforcements. Yuta waited in silence, shifting only once to find a better position.

Before long, she returned, trailed by over a dozen uniformed black-clad Shinigami.

Yuta raised an eyebrow as they approached. "Doesn't this seem a bit excessive? You're openly using squad members for this?"

"Geez," Matsumoto replied, flashing him a laid-back smile and patting his shoulder without shame. "You worry too much. No one in our squad has anything better to do anyway-and they all love helping out."

Takezoe Kokichiro stood among them, the seventh seat of their squad. His long face turned toward Yuta as he nodded once with firm seriousness. "Yes. Anything the vice-captain asks of us will always be fulfilled."

"See?" Matsumoto grinned, slipping her arm around Yuta's neck and pressing his face directly into her chest without hesitation. Her tits squished flat against his cheek before rebounding once she pulled him tighter under her arm.

"Let's go."

They headed toward a department store with their makeshift task force in tow.

The owner was an elderly man named Takahai-a former commoner from Rukongai who had passed the spiritual pressure test when he was young and served steadily as a regular soldier ever since finishing at the academy. He'd retired now and ran this shop while his two sons looked for work in the Gotei 13. Most days were ordinary: light business, some games of chess with old friends, and daily life running smoothly.

Until today.

The moment they entered, over a dozen men filled the space at once. Calloused hands. Blades at their sides. They weren't trying to intimidate anyone-but the sight alone would unsettle anyone unfamiliar with them.

At the head walked Matsumoto Rangiku. She wasn't suppressing her spiritual pressure-but somehow her presence told enough of a story on its own: this woman held authority.

Among them all stood out one figure-a man in Shino Academy uniform who seemed almost too clean for his company. Youthful and polished enough that it wasn't hard to guess why someone like Matsumoto might be dragging him around.

The squad fanned out and began loading boxes with quilts, mattresses, towels, toothbrushes… everything they needed for furnishing Yuta's home.

"This pink quilt is cute," one commented aloud. "I want it."

"This cup has a Chappy design on it! I'm taking it."

"This, this, and this-I want them all!"

Yuta tuned most of it out and wandered to the shelves until he stopped by a chess set on display.

Takahai noticed right away and approached with a polite smile. "Does this kid like chess?"

Yuta glanced up for only a second but didn't reply.

Takahai continued without pressing too hard. "That set's actually imported from the Living World. My friends and I enjoy it quite a bit."

"If you ever want to play, feel free to drop by sometime," he added casually. "We're not very skilled-but judging from how smart you look-I doubt you'd struggle."

With that said, he pushed the set gently toward Yuta across the counter. "Consider it a gift from one chess lover to another. I'm Takahai, by the way… may I ask your name?"

"Yuta," he answered plainly.

"Nice to meet you then," Takahai said with genuine warmth before turning back toward his shelves.

Soon enough Matsumoto Rangiku had gathered up everything she wanted and moved toward the door again.

Boxes were stacked high outside as she called out: "Boss, how much is all this?"

Takahai counted quickly then replied with little fanfare: "Five thousand Kan."

After Yuta paid, he checked his funds-a little over ten thousand left now. Nearly broke already.

They returned to Yuta's new place carrying what they'd bought-all those black-clad Shinigami working quickly until every room in that previously empty house looked properly lived in.

Clean mattresses were laid out neatly with matching quilts atop them. Teapots and cups were placed on bedside tables alongside wrapped toothbrushes and rolled towels. Cotton slippers were set near entrances for comfort once shoes came off.

When they finished setting everything in place, Takezoe Kokichiro bowed respectfully toward Matsumoto Rangiku along with the others beside him. "Vice-captain we've finished."

She nodded once approvingly. "Good-you're all dismissed."

Once alone again with Yuta, she began counting on her fingers playfully while he sat nearby resting for a moment longer.

"Need money?" she asked after a while.

"Is there any way to earn that's easy and quick?" Yuta asked bluntly.

"Actually… yeah." Matsumoto clapped her hands together sharply as something came to mind. "Next time I get the chance, I'll show you where."

"But not today." She brushed her arm against his shoulder then smiled again like she had nothing else in the world to worry about. "Today's for drinking until we forget about any problems we have."

"Let's go take that walk…"
