Chapter 58 - The EDGE Of Victory

Subject 0002 had already returned to her place in the circle. Her expression was unchanged.

Then— Subject 0011 stepped forward.

The thin boy with round glasses. The one who had seemed so uncomfortable, so out of place, during the earlier sessions.

The one whose hands had trembled as he fidgeted with the sleeve of his uniform.

He walked into the center of the open space. His movements were hesitant, uncertain—

the movements of someone who had never been asked to fight before.

His bare feet pressed against the scarred concrete, each step tentative as though he was afraid the ground might give way beneath him.

His eyes darted nervously around the circle, searching for something— anything— that might offer him comfort. He found nothing.

Only the cold, unyielding stares of the other children, their expressions a mixture of curiosity and indifference.

A boy stepped forward to meet him. He was taller than Subject 0011, broader. He smiled as he walked toward Subject 0011.

It was not a kind smile. It was the smile of someone who had already decided the outcome of the fight.

"Well, well," he said, his voice dripping with mockery. "Looks like I got lucky."

Subject 0011 swallowed hard. His hands were trembling at his sides. His face was pale, his eyes wide with barely concealed fear.

A thin sheen of sweat had broken out on

his forehead, glistening under the harsh fluorescent lights.

"P-Please," he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper. "I don't want to fight."

The other boy laughed. It was a harsh, cruel sound that echoed through the room.

Several children in the circle shifted uncomfortably, but no one intervened.

"Too bad," the boy said, his smile widening. "We don't always get what we want."

He lunged forward without warning. There was no hesitation, no preamble— just sudden, brutal violence.

His fist connected with Subject 0011's face

in a devastating blow, the impact sharp and sickening.

Subject 0011's head snapped back .... His glasses flew from his face, spinning through the air before skittering across the concrete floor.

One of the lenses shattered on impact, the glass scattering like tiny, glittering tears.

The frame bent and twisted, landing in a crumpled heap near the edge of the circle.

Subject 0011 staggered, his hands flying up to protect his face. Blood was already dripping from his nose, staining the front of his grey uniform.

His eyes were wide, dazed, struggling to focus without his glasses.

But the other boy was already moving. Another blow landed—

this time to Subject 0011's ribs. The thin boy gasped, doubling over, his breath leaving his body in a sharp, ragged wheeze.

The sound was desperate, the sound of someone who was being crushed.

"Not so tough now, are you?" the other boy sneered. His voice was loud, carrying across the room, meant for the other children as much as for Subject 0011.

He grabbed Subject 0011 by the collar of his uniform and pulled him upright. His fist connected with his face again.

Blood spattered across the concrete, dark and glistening under the harsh fluorescent lights.

A tooth clattered to the ground, small and white against the grey floor.

Subject 0011 tried to fight back. He swung

his fists wildly, desperately, his movements uncoordinated and weak.

His blows landed harmlessly against the other boy's chest, doing nothing to slow his assault. It was like watching a bird try to fight a hawk.

The other boy laughed again, louder this time. "Is that all you've got? Pathetic."

He shoved Subject 0011 to the ground. The thin boy hit the concrete with a sharp crack, his body crumpling like a discarded doll.

His head struck the floor, the sound dull and final. He lay there for a moment, gasping for air, his body trembling with pain and exhaustion.

Blood dripped from his nose, pooling on the concrete beneath his face . His glasses lay a few feet away, broken and useless, one lens completely shattered.

The other boy stood over him, his chest heaving, his eyes blazing with cruel satisfaction.

Sweat dripped from his brow, but his smile was wide, triumphant. He reached down, grabbing Subject 0011 by the hair and lifting his head off the ground.

The thin boy's body went limp, too exhausted to resist.

"Say it," he snarled, his voice low and threatening. "Say you surrender. Say it

and I'll stop."

Subject 0011's eyes flickered open. They were dazed, unfocused, clouded with pain.

The broken lens of his glasses lay nearby, catching the light like a shattered eye. For

a moment, it seemed like he might give in, might do what he was told.

But then—something changed.

His eyes slowly focused on his opponent's face. The fear was still there. The pain was

still there. But beneath it, something else

was stirring—

Something cold, something dark, something that had been buried deep beneath layers of fear and insecurity. It rose like a tide.

Subject 0011 stared at his opponent. His gaze was no longer that of a frightened boy.

It was the gaze of someone who had been pushed past every limit, who had been broken and shattered and had found something unexpected in the wreckage.

A cold, burning Rage.

His eyes seemed to darken, the pupils dilating until they swallowed the irises. There was no warmth in them anymore, no fear, no hesitation.

Only a cold, simmering fury that seemed to have been waiting for this moment.

The other boy must have seen it too, because his smile faltered. For just a moment, his grip on Subject 0011's hair loosened.

Something flickered in his eyes— a flash of uncertainty, of doubt. "What—" he began, his voice suddenly uncertain.

Subject 0011 moved.

It was not a desperate, flailing movement. It was precise, controlled— the movement of someone who had finally stopped fighting their instincts and surrendered to them.

His body twisted, his weight shifting with

a fluid grace that seemed impossible for someone so injured.

His hand shot out, his fingers closing around his opponent's wrist like a vice.

He pulled, using the other boy's momentum against him. The boy stumbled forward, off balance, and Subject 0011 swept his leg out from under him.

The other boy hit the ground with a heavy thud. His head struck the concrete, a sharp crack that echoed through the room like a gunshot.

Subject 0011 was on top of him in an instant.

His fists connected with his opponent's face—once, twice, three times. Each blow was brutal, precise, driven by a cold, unyielding fury that seemed to come from somewhere deep within him.

His knuckles split open on the other boy's teeth but he didn't even seem to notice.

The other boy tried to fight back. He swung his fists wildly, desperately, but Subject 0011 was relentless.

He did not pause. He simply kept hitting, his fists rising and falling like a machine, each blow landing with brutal, devastating force.

Blood sprayed across the concrete. The other boy's face was a mask of crimson, his nose broken, his lips split, his eyes wide with terror.

He tried to scream, but the sound was lost beneath the relentless barrage of blows.

"Stop!" he gasped, his voice a broken, desperate plea.

"Please— stop! I surrender!"

Subject 0011 did not stop. His fists kept falling, kept pounding, kept crushing.

His expression was blank, unreadable as though he had checked out of his body and was simply watching from a great distance.

The other boy's struggles grew weaker. His arms fell limp at his sides. His eyes rolled back in his head.

Subject 0011 finally paused, his chest heaving, his fists covered in blood.

He stared down at his opponent, expression unreadable. His breathing was ragged, body trembling with exhaustion.

The children stared at Subject 0011, their eyes wide. They had seen violence before.

But this was different.

Maya stared at Subject 0011, She had never seen anything like it. The thin, frightened boy had been transformed into something else entirely—

Something cold, something ruthless, something terrifying.

He rose slowly to his feet. He stood over

his opponent, his body trembling with exhaustion.

His glasses lay shattered on the concrete, forgotten. He didn't seem to notice.

He looked around the room, his eyes moving from face to face. They were still cold but there was something else in them now.

Something that might have been surprise or perhaps it was simply the realization of what he had just done.

He turned and walked back to his place in the circle. His movements were slow, unsteady.

The defeated boy lay motionless on the ground, his face a bloody ruin.

Attendants rushed forward. They lifted him, carrying him out of the room without a word.

The Code Instructor rose from her bench. Her amber eyes were fixed on Subject 0011, her expression unreadable.

For a long moment, she simply looked at him, her gaze moving across his trembling form.

"Subject 0011, That was ... unexpected."

Subject 0011 did not respond. His eyes fixed on the floor. His chest was still heaving, his body still trembling with the aftershocks of adrenaline.

"You have been hiding something, Something that even you did not know was there."

She paused, her eyes settling on the place where Subject 0011's opponent had fallen.

"Never evaluate an opponent by size, posture or demeanor. Evaluate only their actions. Assumptions are liabilities. Observation is survival.

The one who looks like they can not fight...

Is often the one who fights the hardest when they are pushed too far."

A faint pause.

"You survived because you adapted. And you acted without hesitation. That was correct but your victory became inefficient the moment you lost control.

A Mission Ends The Moment The Objective

Is Achieved. Anything Beyond That Is Waste.

You failed to master yourself. Remember that."

Her gaze remained fixed on Subject 0011.

"NEXT."

The children shifted, their bodies tensing. A girl stepped forward, her eyes scanning the circle for an opponent.

The fights continued, one after another.

Each match brought its own rhythm— some brief and brutal, others prolonged and desperate.

The children fought with everything they had, their bodies colliding against the scarred concrete, their breaths ragged, their fists bloodied.

The circle had grown smaller, the pairs dwindling. And then— there was only

one pair left.

Maya had known this moment was coming. She had felt it building, like a storm on the horizon.

Now it was her turn.

She stepped forward and walked to the center of the circle and stopped, her eyes fixed on the Code Instructor.

The Code Instructor studied her for a moment,"Are you ready, Subject 17 A?"

Maya met her gaze, "Yes, Instructor."

"Good."

She stepped back, her hands clasping loosely behind her back. Her posture was relaxed, the posture of someone who had nothing to fear.

"Whenever you're ready."

Maya took a breath. She raised her fists in front of her, her weight balanced on the balls of her feet.

She had watched the other children fight.

She had seen how they moved, how they attacked, how they defended.

She had tried to learn from them, to absorb their techniques but she was not them. She was smaller, weaker.

She lunged forward.

Her fist swung toward the Instructor's face with all the force she could muster. It was a desperate, reckless attack.

The Code Instructor did not move. She simply shifted her weight, her body turning slightly.

Maya's fist met only air. She stumbled forward, her momentum carrying her

past the Code Instructor.

She caught herself before she fell, spinning around to face her opponent.

The Instructor was looking at her with the same expression as before.

Maya lunged again. This time, she aimed lower— a punch toward the Instructor's midsection.

The Code Instructor stepped aside, just far enough to avoid the blow. Maya stumbled past her once more, her balance wavering.

She lunged again.

This time, the Code Instructor did not simply step aside. She moved forward, closing the distance between them in a fluid motion.

Her hand shot out, her fingers closing around Maya's throat.

Maya gasped, her hands flying up to claw at the Code Instructor's arm but the grip was like iron. She could not move it.

"Your attacks are too slow. Too predictable."

She released Maya's throat and stepped back, her hands returning to their position clasped behind her back.

Maya rose slowly, her chest heaving but she did not cry. She looked at the Instructor, her eyes blazing with defiance.

The Code Instructor's fist connected with her stomach. She doubled over, the air leaving her body in a sharp, ragged gasp.

Her hands flew up to protect her midsection, but the Code Instructor was relentless.

Another blow— this time to her shoulder. Maya felt something pop, a sharp, searing pain that shot through her arm.

She cried out, her voice raw and desperate.

But she did not surrender.

The Code Instructor grabbed her by the collar of her uniform and pulled her upright. Her fist connected with Maya's face— once, twice, three times.

Blood sprayed across the concrete. Maya's vision was fading but she did not surrender.

The Instructor released her. Maya collapsed to her knees, her face a mask of blood and bruising.

"You are still standing, That is remarkable. Most children your age would have broken

by now.

However, you are not like most children. You are something else that I have only seen a few times before in my years of training."

The Instructor studied her for a moment. The child before her was battered and bruise.

Blood trickled from a cut above her eyebrow, staining the side of her face. Her uniform was torn, her bare feet covered in scrapes and dirt.

She tilted her head slightly as though considering something she had not considered before.

"Subject 17 A, You are small, untrained. It would be...unfair to expect you to fight me

on equal terms."

She paused, letting the words sink in.

Maya's jaw tightened, her hands were clenched at her sides, The pain was grounding, keeping her focused.

"Therefore, I will offer you a concession."

She stepped closer, her hands clasping behind her back. Her voice was calm,

"You do not need to defeat me. You don't need to land a blow that causes damage.

You only need to touch me once. You must deliberately touch me Anywhere on my body."

A murmur rippled through the circle. Several children shifted uncomfortably. Eyes flickered from the Code Instructor to Maya and back again.

Some frowned in confusion, unable to understand why the Instructor would

lower the standard for a single child.

Others remained silent, studying Maya with renewed interest.

Even those who had shown no emotion until now found themselves watching more intently, sensing that this was no act of kindness.

The boy with the scar—Subject 0004—narrowed his eyes, his arms crossed tightly over his chest.

The girl with the cropped black hair—Subject 0002—leaned forward slightly, her sharp eyes fixed on Maya.

Maya stared at the Instructor, her mind racing.

Touch her. That's all. Just once.

On the surface, the task sounded almost laughably simple. No victory by force. No impossible demand to defeat someone far beyond her ability.

Yet the simplicity of the instruction was precisely what made it frightening.

Nothing inside this hell was ever as simple as it first appeared. A cold certainty settled deep within her bones.

This Would Not Be Easy. She swallowed slowly.

"Do you understand the terms, Subject 17 A?"

"Yes, Instructor."

"ATTACK."

Maya steadied herself, forcing her trembling legs to be still. Then, she lunged forward. Her hand shot out, reaching for the Instructor's arm.

The Code Instructor simply shifted her weight just enough to carry her out of reach. It was a small movement —a subtle rotation of her hips, a slight bend of her knees.

Maya's fingers brushed empty air, the fabric of the Instructor's sleeve slipping through her grasp like water.

She stumbled past, her balance wavering. Her arms pinwheeled as she tried to catch herself, her feet scrambling for purchase on the slick concrete.

She tried a different approach. She feinted to the left, her body shifting in that direction, her hand reaching toward the Instructor's shoulder.

The Code Instructor moved, her body turning to follow the feint but Maya had anticipated this. At the last moment, she dove to the right, her hand reaching for the Code Instructor's leg.

The Instructor's eyes flickered—a brief, almost imperceptible shift.

For a moment, Maya thought she might succeed. Her fingers were inches away, reaching for the Instructor's knee.

And then the Instructor's leg moved. It shifted back. Maya's hand slammed against the concrete, the impact sending a jolt of pain through her wrist.

She bit back a cry, her eyes watering. The pain was sharp, immediate . She pulled her hand back, cradling it against her chest.

The Code Instructor did not acknowledge her pain, "Again, 17A."

Maya moved forward, her hand reaching for the Instructor's shoulder. The Code Instructor shifted, her body turning with a fluid grace that seemed effortless.

Maya adjusted her trajectory, her hand changing direction in mid-motion.

She had learned from her previous attempts. She was adapting, learning, forcing her body to move faster than it had ever moved before.

For a brief, fleeting moment, she thought she might succeed. Her fingers brushed against the fabric of the Instructor's sleeve—

And then the Instructor's hand shot out, her fingers closing around Maya's wrist like iron.

Maya gasped, her momentum abruptly halted. The Instructor held her there. She looked down at Maya,

"A good attempt but anticipation is not enough."

Maya was staggering now, her vision swimming at the edges but she moved forward again.

She had learned something, she had seen the pattern in the Code Instructor's movements, the subtle shifts that preceded each evasion.

She moved differently this time. She did not lunge forward recklessly. Her hand reaching forward in a slow motion.

The Code Instructor moved, her body shifting to avoid the contact but Maya had anticipated this.

She changed direction, her hand following the Instructor's movement, her fingers brushed against the fabric of the Instructor's sleeve—

And then the Code Instructor moved.

Maya stumbled forward, her balance breaking, her body crashing into the Code Instructor's chest.

For a brief, frozen moment, Maya's mind caught up with what had just happened.

She had touched her.

The Code Instructor's body went still. Her amber eyes widened—a flicker of something that might have been shock or perhaps simply surprise.

Maya pulled back immediately, her heart pounding. "I— I touched you, Instructor."

The Code Instructor stared at her, "You did.

But you—"

Maya's heart sank.

"I said you needed to touch me, I didn't say that accidental contact would count. You have failed."

Maya knelt on the cold floor, she had actually touched her but it didn't count. She felt something cold settle in her chest—

A hollow ache that spread through her body like ice.
