[ NEXT MORNING, 05:50 AM ]
The heavy steel door slid open with a low mechanical hum. Maya stepped inside.
The room was vast, larger than she had expected.
Rows of metal benches stretched across the floor, arranged in perfect, orderly lines. The walls were bare concrete, unadorned except for a massive digital display at the front of the room.
Seated on those benches— dozens of children.
She recognized them immediately. The boy with the scar across his face— Subject 0004. He sat near the front, his posture rigid, his eyes fixed forward.
His hands rested on his knees, his fingers curled slightly, as though he were ready to spring into action at any moment.
The girl with the cropped black hair— Subject 0002. She sat a few rows behind him, her arms crossed loosely over her chest.
Her sharp eyes moved across the room with quiet calculation, cataloging every face, every movement, every weakness.
The thin boy with round glasses— Subject 0011. He sat near the back, his head slightly lowered, his fingers fidgeting with the sleeve of his uniform.
He looked uncomfortable, out of place as though he were trying to make himself as small as possible.
The girl who had collapsed against the wall. They were all here, all present. Dozens of eyes turned toward her, fixing on her with a mixture of curiosity and exhaustion.
She felt their gaze like a weight pressing against her skin.
The Code Instructor stood at the front of the room, "Subject 17 A. You're late."
Maya's heart clenched. She had not been late. She had arrived exactly on time but she knew better than to argue.
"I apologize, Instructor."
The Code Instructor studied her for a moment longer— then turned back to the display.
"Take your seat."
Maya moved quickly,She found an empty seat near the middle of the room, slipping into it as quietly as she could.
The boy with the scar glanced at her briefly before looking away.
The Code Instructor gestured toward the massive display behind her. The screen flickered to life, revealing a single word:
[ OBEDIENCE ]
"Today —you will learn the most important lesson of the Nirvana Program, Obedience.
Strength can be defeated. Speed can be outrun. Intelligence can be outsmarted but obedience—
Absolute, unquestioning obedience is the foundation upon which everything else is built."
She began to walk slowly along the front of the room,
"Without Obedience, Strength Is Chaos, Speed Is Recklessness, Intelligence Is Dangerous."
She stopped near the boy with the scar.
"You will learn to obey without hesitation. Without question. Without the need for understanding."
Her gaze shifted to the girl with the cropped black hair.
"You will learn to set aside your own judgment. To trust that the instructions you are given are the only instructions that matter.
Some of you believe that obedience is weakness.
That it means surrendering your autonomy, your individuality, your will. Those of you who hold this belief will not survive the program.
Because you are unwilling to let go of the illusion that your judgment is superior to the system that modified you.
Today You All Will Demonstrate The First Principle Of Obedience."
A pause. "Stand."
Every child in the room rose immediately.
The sound was a symphony of obedience— the scrape of metal against concrete, the soft shuffle of bare feet finding their positions on the cold floor.
It was not a movement born of eagerness. It was the movement of creatures who had learned that hesitation was a luxury they could not afford.
Maya rose with the others. Her body screamed in protest— every fiber of her being still aching from the previous day's run.
But she did not hesitate, she could not afford to.She stood at attention, her shoulders back, her eyes fixed forward.
"You will engage in one-on-one combat."
A ripple of motion passed through the room. It was almost imperceptible— the slightest shift in posture, the quickening of breath.
"You will choose your opponent. You will have five minutes to select a partner.
At the end of five minutes, those who have not chosen will be assigned an opponent by me.
You will fight until one of you surrenders or is unable to continue. There are no rules. No restrictions. No limitations.
You will use whatever means necessary to defeat your opponent."
The moment the words left her lips, the room erupted into motion.
Children turned to one another, their eyes scanning the crowd, searching for opponents.
Some moved quickly, grabbing the nearest person before anyone else could claim them. Others hesitated, their gazes darting from face to face, calculating their options.
The boy with the scar across his face—moved with quiet efficiency. He turned to a tall, broad-shouldered boy standing a few feet away. He did not speak.
He simply pointed at him. The other boy met his gaze for a long moment, then nodded once.
The girl with the cropped black hair— moved like a shadow. She walked directly toward a girl who looked slightly older than her.
She stopped in front of her and waited.
The other girl hesitated, her eyes darting away for just a moment— then she gave a small, reluctant nod.
The thin boy with round glasses— seemed frozen. He stood in the middle of the room, his eyes darting frantically from face to face.
His hands were trembling, his fingers twisting the fabric of his uniform.
A boy with a shaved head approached him,
a cruel smile spreading across his face. The thin boy swallowed hard, his face draining of color but he did not step away.
Maya stood still. Her eyes moved across the room, watching as pairs formed around her.
She searched for someone— anyone— who might be willing to face her. But no one looked her way.
She was too small, too young, too weak. No one wanted to fight her because there was nothing to gain from defeating her.
The minutes ticked by.
The room grew quieter as pairs solidified.
Children stood in clusters of two, their eyes fixed on one another, waiting for the instruction to begin.
Maya remained alone.
The boy with the scar glanced at her once,
his expression unreadable. The girl with the cropped black hair looked at her for a brief moment, then looked away.
Maya felt a familiar sensation creep into her chest. A cold, hollow emptiness that she had felt many times before. The feeling of being overlooked.
''It Doesn't Matter, '' She Told Herself.
''It Doesn't Matter. I'm Used To This.''
But even as she thought it, she felt a small, stubborn flicker of something else, something that refused to be extinguished.
The Code Instructor stepped forward.
Then— her gaze settled on Maya.
Her expression did not change but her eyes lingered on Maya for a moment longer than usual.
"Ohhh ," she said, her voice carrying a note of something that might have been amusement.
"Subject 17 A. It appears you have no opponent."
Maya met her gaze, "No, Instructor."
The Code Instructor tilted her head slightly,
"Everyone else has found a partner, You are the only one who has not."
"Yes, Instructor."
"Do you know why that is, Subject 17 A?"
Maya hesitated. She could feel the weight of dozens of eyes on her— the other children, watching, waiting to see how she would respond.
"Because they don't think I'm worth fighting."
A faint pause.
"An interesting observation."
"Compared to the others physically, I am weaker but I am still alive. That means I am not weak enough to be dead."
The Code Instructor's eyes flickered. A flicker of something that might have been interest. Or perhaps it was simply the reflection of the harsh fluorescent light.
"Wise words for a four-year-old, since you have no opponent, I will be your opponent."
A ripple of shock passed through the room. Several children shifted uncomfortably. A few exchanged glances, their expressions a mixture of surprise and unease.
The boy with the scar looked at Maya with something that might have been pity or perhaps it was simply surprise.
"You will learn nothing from this fight except the feeling of your own limitations. And that
is a lesson worth learning."
Her voice cut through the silence, "Positions."
The children moved immediately. Metal scraped against concrete—
A harsh, jarring sound that filled the chamber like the grinding of tectonic plates. Benches were pushed aside, their legs leaving long, jagged scars across the worn floor.
Within moments, the room had been transformed.
The benches that had once stood in neat, orderly rows were now pressed against the walls.
In their place was a vast open space— a clearing in the center of the chamber, marked with the ghosts of countless battles fought before this one.
The children formed a rough circle around the open space. Dozens of them, their grey uniforms blending together like a sea of stone.
Some had their arms crossed, their expressions carefully blank.
Others leaned forward slightly, their curiosity barely concealed behind masks of indifference.
The Code Instructor walked to the far end of the room. Her footsteps were silent, each one a soft, almost imperceptible tap.
She lowered herself onto a metal bench that had been left against the wall. The movement was fluid— the movement of someone who knew that time was on her side.
"There Is No Value In Rushing A Lesson."
She crossed one leg over the other, her hands resting loosely on her knee. Her posture was almost casual but there was nothing casual about her presence.
"Learn from those who have already begun to understand what obedience and discipline truly mean."
Her amber eyes settled on the waiting pairs,
"The first match. Step forward."
Children glanced at one another, their eyes darting nervously from face to face. No one wanted to be the first.
No one wanted to step into that open space and expose themselves to the judgment of dozens of eyes.
Then— Subject 0004 stepped forward.
The one whose eyes carried the cold, unreadable stillness of someone who
had already learned to survive.
He walked into the center of the open space. His movements were fluid, controlled— His eyes were fixed on something— someone across the room.
A boy stepped forward to meet him. He was tall, with the kind of build that came from years of physical conditioning.
His muscles were visible beneath the rough grey fabric of his uniform, his posture solid . His face was hard, his jaw set, his eyes cold and calculating.
He looked like he had been fighting his entire life— like he had been born into a world that demanded violence and had learned to embrace it.
The two boys stood facing each other in the center of the circle.
Subject 0004's opponent was the first to break the stillness.
He lunged forward, his fist swinging toward Subject 0004's face with brutal, direct force.
The blow was powerful, driven by years of training and raw, unbridled aggression. It would have shattered the jaw of a lesser opponent.
But he was not a lesser opponent . He did not retreat. He slipped aside—
A fluid, almost lazy sidestep that carried him out of the path of the blow with the grace of flowing water.
The boy's fist met only air, the force of the swing carrying him forward, off balance.
Subject 0004 did not wait for him to recover. He surged in, his body shifting with the precision of a predator.
His fist connected with the boy's ribs in a sharp, precise blow— a strike that was not intended to kill but to weaken.
A soft grunt escaped the other boy's lips. His opponent staggered, his hand instinctively pressing against his side where the blow had landed.
For a moment, his composure cracked— a flicker of pain, of surprise, of something that might have been fear.
But he did not fall. He straightened, his eyes blazing with anger. He swung again, the blow was wild, driven by frustration rather than strategy.
Subject 0004 blocked it with his forearm. The impact was sharp, a dull crack that echoed through the room like a gunshot.
They exchanged a series of blows— fast, brutal, efficient. Fists met flesh with dull,
wet thuds. Feet scraped against concrete.
Breaths came in sharp, ragged gasps.
Subject 0004's movements were precise, controlled. Each strike was deliberate, each block calculated. He did not waste energy.
His opponent was different. His movements were more desperate, each blow driven by anger and frustration. The larger child didn't conserve his energy.
Maya watched, her eyes fixed on the fight. She had never seen anything like it.
The way Subject 0004 moved, the way he anticipated his opponent's attacks, the way he seemed to read the other boy's movements before they even happened.
He was not just fighting. He was calculating. Adapting. Learning.
He was turning his opponent's strength against him, using his aggression as a weapon.
The larger child lunged forward again, his fist swinging toward Subject 0004's face but he was already moving, his body shifting just enough to avoid the blow.
The fist passed within inches of his face, close enough that Maya could see the air ripple around it.
Subject 0004 countered immediately—
a sharp, precise strike to the other boy's exposed side.
The blow landed with a dull, wet thud, followed by the sharp intake of breath
from his opponent.
The boy staggered back, his face twisted in pain. His breathing was ragged, his movements slower, less controlled.
Sweat dripped from his brow, mixing with the blood that trickled from a cut above his eye.
Subject 0004 did not press his advantage. He simply stood there, waiting . He had not broken a sweat. "Surrender. "
There was no mockery in it. Only the quiet certainty of someone who knew the outcome was inevitable.
The other boy's jaw tightened.
He straightened, fists clenched at his sides, Defiance hardened his expression. "No."
He lunged forward again, his movements slower now, more predictable.
Subject 0004 stepped aside, easily avoiding the blow. The force of the swing carried his opponent past him, stumbling, off balance.
He swept his leg out from under him—a clean, efficient movement that sent the other boy crashing to the ground.
The impact was sharp, a heavy thud that echoed through the room.
The boy lay there for a moment, gasping for air, his body trembling with exhaustion.
Subject 0004 stood over him. He looked down at his opponent, his expression unchanged,
"Surrender," he said again.
Slowly, painfully, the boy raised one hand—
a gesture of submission, "I surrender."
Subject 0004 stepped back. He simply turned and walked back to his place in the circle, his movements unhurried.
From the edge of the circle, Maya couldn't look away, her mind racing. She had never seen anyone fight with such precision, such control.
The Code Instructor regarded Subject 0004 thoughtfully. "Good.
That is how a fight is won. With control, with calculation, with the willingness to end it when the victory is certain."
She murmured,
"Those Who Are Like Him Will Survive. Those Who Are Not Will Learn Or They Will Die."
The children stood in their circle, their eyes still fixed on the spot where the fight had occurred.
The defeated boy had been helped to his feet by two attendants, his body trembling with exhaustion and shame.
His footsteps dragging against the concrete.
Then— Subject 0002 stepped forward.
The girl with the cropped black hair. The one who had watched Maya with those sharp, calculating eyes.
Her movements were silent—The movements of someone who had learned to move through the world without disturbing it.
Her eyes were fixed on someone across the room.
A girl stepped forward to meet her.
She was taller than Subject 0002, with a lean, athletic build and sharp, angular features. Her dark hair was pulled back in a tight ponytail.
Her eyes were calculating— the eyes of someone who had learned to survive through sheer force of will.
The two girls stood facing each other. The silence stretched between them, heavy and expectant.
Subject 0002's opponent was the first to move.
She lunged forward, her fist swinging toward Subject 0002's face with brutal, direct force. The blow was powerful.
Subject 0002 did not flinch. She simply moved—
a fluid, almost imperceptible shift of her body that carried her out of the path of the blow.
The fist passed within inches of her face, close enough that Maya could see the air ripple around it.
Before her opponent could recover, Subject 0002 moved.
Her body twisted, her leg sweeping out in
a low, precise arc that connected with her opponent's ankle.
The girl stumbled, her balance broken. For a moment, she teetered on the edge of falling—then caught herself. She took a quick step back, creating distance between them.
The tall girl lunged again, faster this time. Her fist swung toward Subject 0002's face with reckless abandon.
But Subject 0002 was already moving, her body shifting just enough to avoid the blow.
She countered immediately—a sharp, precise strike to the other girl's exposed jaw. The blow landed with a dull, wet thud, followed by the sharp intake of breath from her opponent.
The girl staggered back, her hand flying to her jaw. She stumbled, almost losing her footing, before catching herself.
Subject 0002 moved forward, closing the distance between them.
Subject 0002's fist connected with her opponent's stomach, driving the air from
her lungs in a sharp, ragged gasp.
The girl doubled over, her hands clutching her midsection.Subject 0002's leg swept out, striking the back of her opponent's knee.
The girl's leg buckled beneath her and she crashed to the ground.
Subject 0002 moved quickly, she dropped to one knee, her arm wrapping around her opponent's neck in a controlled chokehold.
The girl struggled, her hands clawing at Subject 0002's arm but the hold was too tight.
She tightened her grip. Her voice was almost gentle. "Surrender."
The girl on the ground gasped, her body trembling with exhaustion and pain. She slapped the ground twice—the universal signal of submission, "I surrender."
Subject 0002 released her immediately,
Qshe rose to her feet, breathing steady. Her expression unchanged.
The children stared at Subject 0002, their expressions a mixture of awe and fear.
The Instructor rose from her bench.... Her movements were slow, she walked to the center of the open space,
"Subject 0002, That was... efficient."
"Thank you, Instructor."
"Most subjects take longer, They waste time, they waste energy but you saw the opening and you took it. "
She paused, her amber eyes never leaving Subject 0002's face.
"That is how a fight should be won. Not with brute force but with precision....With the willingness to end it when the opportunity presents itself.
Subject 0002. That is the expected standard."
Subject 0002's expression did not change. But something shifted in her posture—
a slight relaxation of her shoulders, a faint easing of the tension in her jaw, "Thank you, Instructor."
The Instructor turned away, She returned to her bench. She lowered herself onto the metal seat again ,
"0002 has demonstrated what is possible when you combine skill with discipline.
When you learn to control your body, your mind, your emotions. Learn from her or do not. The choice is yours.
Next. "
